DD Hammocks SuperLight Tarp - Good Alternative to Silnylon

This is a close look at the DD SuperLight tarp. We have a good look at the features, tie outs, reinforcements, and discuss the materials this tarp is made from. It is a TPU (polyurethane) coated waterproof 1.1oz ripstop nylon tarp with 19 tie-out/attachment points. It is 3 meters by 2.8 meters in size and weighs almost exactly 1 lb. Tarps like this aren't just for hammock camping rainfly and I think this particular tarp is good competition for many of the silnylon and other ultralight tarps and rainflies on the market that are marketed to campers, hikers, thru-hikers, bushcrafters, and outdoorsmen of all sorts.

    My Silnylon tarp has a similar material for the tie outs and what I did was put a loop of shock cord on them, keeps the tarp from being over tightened and protects the tie outs from stresses of the wind.

    You always worry about the length of your videos. I don't know how other people feel about it but I'd rather watch a thorough review like this where I get to see how something is made or how something works than some of the 10 minute infomercials other gear reviewers do. I also like how you aren't shy about pointing out flaws in things. That's what happens to a lot of gear review channels is they get shy about saying anything negative about products either because they get free gear to review and don't want to upset the people giving them stuff or they get scared of viewers hitting the dislike button because they think their gear is the best and want to only hear someone affirm to them that they got the best thing in the world. Keep up the good work! Thanks for the thorough review.

    Very thorough overview of the tarp. I just picked one up, mostly as a secondary to my cuben tarp and for a bushcraft kit I put together. I like that you took the time to point out your reservations about the webbing on the tie outs. I don’t share them, but it is certainly something that someone looking for an absolutely bombproof tarp for hard use should consider. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for taking the time to watch! FYI for you and anyone happening to read the comments: The tie outs have been holding up. The ones I was concerned with are showing some signs of wear but are not fraying as I was worried they might. I'll guess it has been deployed 20 times as ground shelter (tarp tent) and pretty close to 15-18 times hung since this video. Sometimes it was up overnight or a couple of days and sometimes it was just up for a couple of hours or so to get out of the weather. It has been a few months since I carried this one (I have a 2GoSystems relfect tarp I've been using this winter), but as soon as stream fishing is open in the spring, this one will be back in my pack.

    The tie out material perhaps needs to be thought of in terms of 550 cord - I am thinking if one needs to pull the tarp so tight as to possibly compromising the tie out, the tarp as well will be compromised - For that one need not be stronger than the other and there should be no concerns to that regard particularly with DD tarps which are of great quality. Like you my preferences are Aqua Quest and DD, NO due to other videos you made I knew nothing of Aqua Quest until I saw your review you made years ago. I hope all is well with you - Your reviews are the next best thing to checking out a product in person, very detailed and in depth..

    If this had their regular tie out webbing like the DD 3X3 has, I think it would be the perfect super light tarp. I don't know what made them change it for this version, but I wish they wouldn't have. .... That said: I have sat out three thunderstorms (one was severe with gusts over 50mph) under it so far and I have slept under it 6 nights. I really like how quiet it is and so far so good on the tie out webbing remaining in tact. If this was a $75 tarp, I'd recommend it all day long. At $112, I think there are a lot of silnylon tarps that are a better value starting with the Aqua Quest Guide tarps. Thanks for watching! I'm glad the information was useful.

    I shot this video almost 4 years ago, so forgive me if my memory isn't perfect: There wasn't much negative to say about this as I recall. I think I didn't like the choice of tie out material for the outside perimeter tie outs and there were some minor issues with attention to detail in regards to finishing some of the heat tape. Left unmentioned, but caught on camera were some further attention to detail issues regarding failure to trim off excess thread and leaving balls and bundles of knotted thread in a few places. My opinion hasn't changed on either point. DD uses superior tie out material on their DD 3X3 (etc) tarps and uses superior tie out material on the ridge-line seam of this same tarp. When I asked them about their choice of perimeter tie out material, the response was that the manufacturer they hired controlled that (strange statement. I've hired manufacturers myself a time or two... they use materials I choose and they agree to use, or they lose the contract). And, though I have no idea what the price is for this item today, at the time of shooting this video, it sold for something over $100 USD so the small 'attention to detail' issues were certainly worth mentioning. When I pay for premium, I expect the small details to receive premium attention. I should add a caveat or two: I have no idea what materials are being used to make this tarp today. My example of it is 4 years old and DD told me that their manufacturer controls materials choice depending on availability, cost, and other factors. (again: I'm baffled by a company allowing a contracted manufacturer to change the specs of an item whenever they want for whatever reasons they want, but that's the excuse DD gave me and I have to assume they were truthful). ... And caveat #2: This video received a comment about 2 weeks ago from someone saying they paid $56 USD for theirs. If that's what they cost now, and if I were reviewing the same tarp with the same materials at *half the price* I paid, my expectations would be lower and I'd be a little less critical of it.

They came out with a new line of tarps called "Safari" and new sizes for the defender camo and the guide series... all three kinds of tarps they have now come in 10X10 and they are all introductary sale priced at $83 for the next few days. ... Michael Reed The new Safari tarps might be for you. They are a 20,000 mm HH rated tarp made from 70d nylon, but they are a combination silnylon and TPU coated, so the weight is reasonable and almost identicle to the Etowah and the DD 3X3... The center seam construction of the safari is the same as the center seam of the Defender and King Camo tarps, so that's seriously impressive... But, I have reservations about silnylon even when it's a combo with TPU. The performance is wonderful and the weight is perfect... but silnylon is more flammable than TPU coated nylon or polyester. I like a small fire very close to my shelter. Silnylon is a risk with my behavior. It's probably a lot less of a risk for everyone else who didn't learn firecraft from Louis L'Amore novels or from drovers and herders who spend cold months out with the cattle and sheep.

    +Essential Gear & Useful Skills I totally agree with your assessment of the safari tarp. It looks great. Fire Is limited in Texas so at least here the silnylon is ok. I am wondering when considering the uses I have for a tarp, if I would not be better served going with a warbonnet super fly or mamajama. it is 1 pound 3 oz or 14 oz respectively. The material is only 30 denier vs 70 and the tie outs are designed for hammock use. the shape is also limiting. But my usage (for now) is also limited. Southeast texas is wet and buggy. I would only use the tarp for emergency shelter and (eventually) hammock use. the ground is usually too damp to not have a ground cover and the mosquitoes are thick until December. (only 2 months out of the year of relatively bug free camping is what we get 4 not having to shovel snow) That is what I must consider when desiding on a tarp. Lighterweight and hammock compatible vs more durable and more versatile. There is a cost difference as well with current sales, it is close but the 15% off at warbonnet is about to end, driving the cost up with the lighter weight material. Eventually, I will get the warbonnet blackbird xlc, so that is a consideration as well. My end goal is not to do thru hiking but to hike out to a location for a few days and base camp. Lightweight is important but not all consuming (like ultralight hikers). That said, I have discovered the advantages of lightweight and now realize the benefits. Enough rambling, what suggestions do you have for my situation?

  • @betweenfiveandseven

    @betweenfiveandseven

    8 жыл бұрын

    I am by no means a hammock expert. I do recall that the blackbird xlc is longer than the blackbird and has a long rigdeline (more than 9 feet). Some of the things I read in a hammock camper forum one time lead me to think that a 10x10 tarp pretty much has to be hung diamond over the blackbird xlc if there is any chance of rain, and of course the diamond configuration reduces the amount of wind protection compared to an A-frame... It creates a conundrum.. I think that thread led to discussion of the DD 4X4 and to some rectangle tarps.

    Surprisingly well. I did a lot of spring fishing this year and this tarp was deployed something between 20-25 times before I swapped it out for the 2Go Systems Reflect tarp I have been testing. I inspected the DD Superlight recently because it will probably be included in my next video and I found very little wear evident really anywhere on the tarp including the light weight tie outs. ... I will say that I have been probably more cautious with this tarp than I would otherwise be because I noted the tie out material as not what I'd prefer... and if you buy the DD Superlight, I recommend you also keep in mind the tie outs are not like the DD 3X3 or an Aquaquest etc. But, that said: I've had no problems to report.

    I'm considering it in the XL size, with the All-mesh interior for the StratoSpire 2 with rectangular (52in x 86in) floor and 5 in/12.7cm bathtub wall The Net-tent is currently $125.00 plus shipping. www.tarptent.com/store/stratospire2-mesh-interior But I may just get the whole StratoSpire 2 tent. But the DD SuperLight Tarp XL would give me more options on the setups to have better airflow, and the color is much better than the gray that the whole tent comes in. With the DD SuperLight Tarp XL, the total cost would be less, and the total weight might be slightly lighter.

  • @betweenfiveandseven

    @betweenfiveandseven

    I don't really understand all-mesh tents. A bottle of Sawyer Maxi-Deet (or the Sawyer Picardin product if you use a lot of nylon that would be harmed by deet) is smaller, lighter, and just as, if not more effective regarding crawling/flying/biting insects. I use a tarp to give me shade or keep me dry when it's raining. ... As to tarptent's other products, I've been led to understand they are lightweight silnylon. 1) I question the price tags (you could get a boutique cuben fiber shelter made by ZPacks, hikelite, bearpaw, cilo, or a bunch of others for that kind of money) and 2) I'm more or less anti-silnylon because I'm likely to need a fire for warmth in my area, and silnylon tends to catch flame rather than melt if there is a mishap such as an ember launched by popping pitch from a pine log landing on it.

  • @muleyscousin6258

    @muleyscousin6258

    My concern is HAIL STORMS. Cubin fiber holds up so-so in moderate hail, but it needs to be a little loose if you get HAIL, and not a tight pitch. I already have the DD Tarp MC XL and I'm more confident about its ability to hold up to HAIL. But the SUPERLIGHT is another question, and I think it might be slightly better than the Cubin Fiber Tarptents. The 1.1oz Ripstop nylon tarp, with 3,000mm PU waterproof coating of the DD Superlight XL Tarp should make it VERY water-resistant. I like the ZPacks Duplex in the Camo, but in sunlight it stands out like a sore thumb. I want to go un-noticed as much as possible. The DD Tarp Multi-Camo or their coyote green is less noticeable even with its black trim and tie-downs. I'm in my early 60s and retired. I'm currently tied down with aging parents to assist with their health needs. But I intend to do some long hiking, once they're gone, if my knees will still let me. SO I'm researching and slowly gathering the equipment I think that will serve my wishes of a thru-hike (diabetes II permitting). Now in the south, from east TX thru GA and up to the Carolinas, the swarming bugs can drive you crazy, even if they're not biting. So, that justifies the desire for a Net- Tent with a bathtub floor to go under a tarp, and still allow great airflow. When the rain and winds come, then you set it up differently and the Net-Tent becomes an inside the Tarp with air flow coming in from the side opposite the incoming winds and rain. Now can you understand its benefits ?

    Hail is also my most serous concern and I am often challenged by fast moving hail storms here in Montana. I got through a small hail storm in late June this year under my DD Superlight. The hail portion of the storm only lasted about ~10 minutes and then the rain went on another 45. None of the stones were larger than dime sized, but it took zero damage. My DD 3X3 (also multicam like your larger one) got me through a serious hail storm last August (stones just barely less than golf ball sized) and I found zero damage when I inspected that tarp later. And a really cheap tarp I did a video on (Yukon Outfitters... really inexpensive Chinese made tarp) last year got me through a nasty hail storm as well. The stones didn't get real big, but they piled up pretty deep before it was over. That tarp did have some cosmetic damage when it was all said and done, but no structural/material problems. I didn't realize you intended to use the net tent in conjunction with a tarp. I interpreted it as that's what you wanted as shelter. One of my pals carries a ~4'X6' piece and a ~2'X4' piece of noseeum net with a hem and some tie outs on them. It only weighs about 2 ounces. He's an avid canoeist and has a tarp shelter configuration that employs his canoe, a paddle, a 10X10 tarp, and the bug net. I did a 5 day trip with him on the Yellowstone River a few years ago, and I'll certainly admit the net was appreciated.

    Hey Montana, Another good review, and I agree with you that the price of $112.00 is a bit too expensive for this tarp. I think that the DD Tarp 3m x 3m Tarp is a much better choice based upon the price. Actually I would prefer the DD Tarp Multicam XL, or the DD Tarp Frontline XL 4m x 4m Tarp which both provide even more coverage than the 3m x 3mTarp and are around the $80.00 mark. They both weigh in at around 2.75 pounds which is acceptable. Again, the super light tarp has its place, but apparently the lightweight tarp is more costly. I hope you make good use of the tarp during the upcoming creek fishing season! Watch out for hail, lightning, and Grizzlies. Thanks again for the review.

    +Msilverhammer I certainly hope to avoid griz. I'll take your advice on that for sure ;) .... Yeah. Ultralight and superlight stuff is almost always a price premium. I wish I could afford to test everything out there to see what's worthwhile and what isn't, but the price premium sure chews up my current gear budget in a hurry. ... Thanks for watching! As always, I really appreciate your time, Msilverhammer.

    Thanks for your very informative video. I myself also have the DD superlight tarp. I am using different tent picks with a Y form and I am also a bit concerned that the small lines at the ends of the tarp may be the future point of failure. But will will see. However I wondered why you set up your tarp the way you did. I am using basically the same setup, but instad of folding two triangles to the inside at the end, I am directly using the edges of the tarp. I hope you understand, what I mean, I posted a picture here: www.outdoorseiten.net/fotos/data/500/Tarp_141.jpg It doesn't look as tight as in your way to do this but it seems to create a bit more room inside.

    If I understand your question, you're asking why I tuck under the back corners. Two reasons: 1) It provides a couple of dry "shelves" (for lack of a better word) so even if a puddle forms under my tarp tent or even if a little run-off gets under it, there's a couple of spots that are likely to be able to keep things dry. 2) It reduces the footprint of the tent without giving up useful storage or sleep area so the tent will remain more stable in the wind.

    Makes sense, thanks. I will give your setup a shot the next time I am using my tarp. :)

    I just got one and am disappointed that all the reinforcement heat tape is peeled and bubbled , I would expect better quality for the cost , and yes the tieouts are way too small , I have contacted them for a return and refund still waiting for a response ......

    I'm still using this one and those thin tie outs are holding up surprisingly well (though I am starting to see just a little of the fraying I was worried about when I did this video). DDs customer service is top-notch, so I don't expect you to have any problems sending it back... However, if you're looking for my recommendation or opinion: You might give them an opportunity to replace it with a better example rather than taking a refund if the main issue is the heat tape. The longer I have this tarp, the more comfortable I am recommending it. It has seen me through a few pretty serious thunder storms now, so it has earned it.

    Well they have contacted me and commenced to say that doesn’t look like that big of a concern are the seams leaking blah blah blah the bottom line is if it’s already bubbled and peeling out of the package it is not acceptable for the cost, andit is not a product that I am going to trust, seems like they want to give me the runaround on replacing it, it’s my first item I’ve ordered from DD and if this is the way they handle issues it will be the last item that I ordered from DD so many other manufacturers out there with good quality equipment,I will keep you posted

    I've talked to them about the tie out material. All they really had to say was that a previous version of this tarp did use similar webbing as the DD 3X3.

    These seem tapes don't last. They've been used in tents and continue to deteriorate

    +Roger Lamb I'll have a look! I've had this one out a couple more times since I did this video. I did an overnight a few days ago and had rain through the evening that turned to sleet and then to snow. It held up just fine. ... Thanks for watching!

    Busque Ud. canales en Castellano,también existen! No me parece lógico por su parte hacer esa apreciación en un canal anglosajón! Cómo no me parecería lógico ver un comentario similar en un canal hispanohablante...¡Qué tenga buen día!

    Hablo algo de español, pero no lo suficientemente fluido para video. No hay muchos hispanohablantes en Montana, así que tengo poca práctica. Ojalá pudiera completar la solicitud. ("solicitud"? Palabra correcta? Tal ves "pedir"?)

    Yes. Some of you ultra light backpackers are super hardcore gram counters. I read some of your forums and know a couple of folks in real life who would say the same. This tarp isn't cuben fiber (now under the dyneema brand) and it isn't 15d silnylon, but on the same note, it is far more durable and stretches way less than 15d sil and is no where near the cost of cuben in this size, so the trade of ~4.5 extra ounces might be worth it to some folks.
