Loved Kelly’s surfing. So much style. He’s just fun to watch. Easiest guy to pull for by far. Such a beloved surfer.

Crazy how good Kelly is still surfing

Kelly’s big carves and snaps are almost always underscored, he is still ripping. With the shit waves they’ve had at most of the events causing him to struggle and falling to a low seed has put him in a really tough place. He draws Gabriel in the ER in chest high onshore surf for example. If there was a season with good surf at most of the events I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in the top 5.

Remembering Slater is 51, he can still mix it with people half his age.

Agreed. And the judges have been lowballing him for years now. Medina squeaked this one and deserved the win-barely-but Slater’s scores were under. Medina’s lines were repetitive. Slater was adding more variety.

what's wrong with judges??? At least 3 Kelly's waves were definitely above 7, and those 2 airs must score 9. Too small waves? But same small waves for Medina. Is that because Medina rides backsided???

They been underscoring him since the Pipe final with Fanning. Not every event. But come on. Posed Ethan Ewing type turns compared to Salvador Dali creativity and chance taking thrill... 10 points for that heat? The crowd roared with the GOAT, not the goofy foot shredder. Like today's music you have to search it to find the goods. The league wants spotify top ten.

Kelly surfs with style and power and creativity. Gabby doesn't even come close, he surfs good as an athlete but not as an artist.

Kelly said it at the wavepool when he exclaimed "what the fuck do they want from me?!"

Slater is the GOAT, and I've been watching him since he was 14 surfing ESA championships at Hatteras. But he's finally showing his age. It only took 38 years!

Scores for KS are a disgrace. Medina is a choppy surfer yet outscores KS on every wave 😢

They grossly underscored him in the heat with Ethan Ewing and the other guy too.

Medina surfed with more speed and power than KS. KS is better at connecting a string of moves, Medina is on another level.

This is some of the best surfing of Kelly's career. He was so close on this heat. But his board sucked. He was like a cat on too much catnip. Incredibly radical maneuvers, but no flow, no smooth style, and flailing arms linking his moves, which is exactly what Gabriel was doing right. Elegance linking extremely powerful manuevers. Gabriel's board made it easy for him. It is painful to have to watch Kelly try to Mann handle his boards. This guy Dan Mann has been copying everyone's boards now for 25 years and he still can't get it right. Salazar is right, Punta Roca will reveal your board's flaws and shortcomings very clearly and quickly like night and day....

The 360 should have been the Highest Score nobody has seen that since the 1980z ..Slater Bringing it Back ♻️

Yeah sorry but those scores are BS. Backhand re-entries are not a high scoring maneuver.

Not much else to do on the back side. Sucks to see him ride rights all year because his frontside is amaizing, but that’s not his problem it’s the wsl that only peeks right hand point breaks. Would also love to see all the regular footers doing some BS carves.

well, what you can say, you only have right hands on WSL, and yet Medina manages to win world titles lol. I would like to see the backhand of the regular ones. Kelly has insane backhand, but what can others do ?

Sorry, Medina was not surfing with style and looked very awkward, while Kelly surfed with much nicer style and variety. Too much emphasis on size of wave for Medina, while it might have been 30% bigger that only equates to about 10 inches bigger, in these conditions, not deserving of too much 'wow' factor.

Medina won because he caught the better looking waves, not because he was the better surfer. Medina didn't do a single creative thing or take an interesting line on any wave. He had a few bigger turns but didn't link them up and other than smooth backside pumping, didn't really have any great flow. Slater was just as fast but more creative with way better flow and linked much more turns together.

Constantly underscoring him while they search for the next cash cow. You can't deny the guy is still surfing better than most on tour. At over 50. Think about that for a minute......truly the best that's ever been.

Underscored... looks like the judges are young kids that needs glasses... they scoring the contest by the surfers age not by the performance of the surfers.

KS with much better style but Medína also a great surfer doing it very good backside. Anyways, KS can be Medinas father! Repect and inspiration, more because KS looks the same level in this heat.

The wsl has become racist trash. The judging has been fake for years. The announcers are pawns (sans strider). All because you’re afraid of the Brazilian superstars you should embrace. So many epic heats ruined by fake scores. Def a bummer for all fans. Needs a fresh overhaul. I’m guessing from the top, but the judging needs to be siloed, no more discussion between them. Pure and simple.
