    The best heat I've ever seen live! I met Kelly after the heat and he was laughing about that air. He said he landed on the board hard with both knees and thought he had broken the board. Needless to say there were two massive dings on his board afterwards. Such an epic day at Trestles!!

    In High School we'd drive to Sebastion Inlet and even during the week the place was packed with locals that had the place wired. The refraction wave off the solid jetty truly doubled up and threw far that lip. The wave was peeled incredibly good with Jeff Crawford, Jeff Klugel and other standouts. Carving 360's were the order of the day. Those surfers ripped, did amazing stunts and young Kelly just took it to another level. Still can see Jeff crawford in the most powerful sections just floating like a leaf down vertical wave faces to tuck into a tube or take the top off a wave as he fly's along the steepest part of the lip. Crawford had some moves that perhaps kelly hasn't mastered. It is no wonder that Florida's Crawford won the pipe masters way back then.

    much like the judges didn't know what to think of Jay Adams. while the other contestants were doing maneuvers Jay could do in his sleep, he was pushing the limits. until proved otherwise Slater is still the best. I've seen people saying he doesn't have another championship in him and the new guard is poised to send him packing. that's yet to be seen, but I think he could win another one and even if he doesn't he probably has several years of highly competitive surfing left in the tank.

    That's what I'm bugged about. He completed that wave to the fullest and if they're that picky, score the first part and then score the second. It was only about 300 milliseconds that he was inactive during his recovery. IMHO 6 to 7 should have been fair and set Kelly's mind at ease as it's a good wave.

    If you are 40 something and pull an air like that in competition followed by a smooth 360 and couple heavy gouges off the top. I'm sorry but he deserved atleast a 9 for the degree of difficulty. The speed created for the air was on a super long extended drop in bottom turn combo not the usual midface speed pump of typical elite surfers. His surfing blows away whoever happens to be competing against him. And if you don't like watching the best display of surfing trestles might ever see just give him a 4.1 for riding a wave better than anyone will for the remainder of the contest. What a joke

    this competition has been full of things that require some further evaluation, but they're not having it. If both Fanning and Slater's best waves that didn't contain aerials were compared, they're very similar. Fanning had some good moments of control, but Slater threw everything in his performance. There's a moment where Pete and even the Aussie announcer say they think that 4.17 was terribly low and it seems that most agree. For the miniscule amount of time he was disconnected, it should say something about that separation and the fact that the nose never dipped down after landing shows that Kelly had connected to some degree. 6 to 7 IMHO for sheer ability and complication as well the remainder of the wave. Risk vs Reward Assessment: Mick played it safe and won. Kelly rolled the dice on every other wave. There was a point that Kelly noticed that his aerial work wasn't being scored for what it was and played the same hand a Mick to test that out. He was given nothing for both approaches. This should have been closer than what we see throughout the heat. We can all agree that these are the old guards (just a figure of speech) and two of the most highly regarded in this sport. Aerials from Kelly are what brought this support back from the grave and now they're treated as lame filler. The sponsors can alleviate these issues by means of funding or the lack thereof. (Even Pupo was scored pretty low for just trying the aerial game too.) Tahiti was the last solid job in the judging department that was clearcut and concise. I never want to be the heckler on KZread, but things aren't good.

    @timblizzard4226

    +Aint1S Dude I disagree on several points. 1) The air. Its ridiculous to say he was disconnected for a minuscule amount of time: his front foot left the board soon as it left the lip, his back foot lost the board after about 90 degrees of rotation, and when he and the board landed neither foot was on the board. As amazing as that recovery was, and trust me, I fount it mind-blowing that somehow he popped up again, that is an incomplete air any way you slice it. So the question is how do you score an incomplete air? And the judges have been very consistent with this: if its incomplete its basically not scored, which in my opinion is fair enough. Otherwise you are rewarding people for just doing crazy shit that is out of control. The rest of the wave looked like a 5 to me. It certainly wasn't as good as the 6 he got later. So the question is, how many points do you give for recovering a total fuck up, where you have to pop up again? Personally I'm not sure. But you think he should get a 7? Something approaching the excellent range? For an incomplete air, popping up twice and then some pretty average manoeuvres (in the context of the heat) on the inside? That seems absolutely ridiculous to me. 2) That airs should be worth more than turns. This just inst the way surfing is scored, never has been, never will be. If it was then professional surfing would be nothing more than an aerial contest; if that's what you are after they exist. In reality airs, rail-work and tube riding are generally not judged independently. It is the difficultly of manoeuvre that is scored, not simply the type. All of Kelly's airs (that he landed) were low difficulty air reverses on the last sections of the wave. In the scheme of airs, that's not a hard one. There's a dude at my local beach break who does air reverses like that in waste high slop all summer long. Look at the difficulty of mick's opening turns on his two best rides (kelly's too for that matter), that rail-work was outstanding; powerful, critical and precise. That's why it was scored higher. That being said the judges have also stated pretty clearly that at certain venues different types of surfing will be moderately preferred: at high performance waves like Bells/Winkipop JBay and Trestles the judges want to see high quality 'traditional' surfing, were at places like teaups, Pipeline and to a lesser extent Cloudbreak turns wont earn you a massive score, its all about a steep drop and deep barrel (the barrel is scored relatively low at Bells), and peaky beaches like Brasil airs are given priority. They have stated this publicly before. But even at a place like Bells, the home of traditional surfing on tour, you can still get a 10 for a single air if the difficulty is high enough (remember that infamous air that these very some judges gave to kelly???). Convenient how people forget... 3) Mick played it safe and won. You are being totally unfair to mick here. The only reason you think he was 'playing it safe' was because he executed his manoeuvres perfectly. Look at his turns for his two best scoring waves; he repeatedly blows the finns, controls the re-entry perfectly - which is extremely difficult - completed 360's and even that whip in the pocket isn't easy. Mick just makes it look easy because his flow, control and connection is so good. Yes kelly may have 'put more into' his turns, in terms of his upper body, but his flow wasn't as good as micks - he got caught between sections several times on his forehand. So why should that be scored higher? 4) That just because you disagree with the judges, there is a problem with professional surfing. I hear this all the time on places like YT from people who are generally just upset because their boy lost, and i'm usually pretty shocked by the level of arrogance people have without even knowing it. Those judges aren't simply some chumps who read a few surfing mags and decided they wanted to be a judge; they are all world class surfers. You remember Tahiti last year where teahups got a 12 foot swell and even pros like wilko were saying they were scared to surf? Well that morning before the contest started all of the judges for the event went out and surfed 8 to 10 foot teahupoo, just so they could have a personal understanding of just how difficult the drop was so they could score accurately. Can you surf 10 foot teahupoo????? No? I didnt think so. But you know how to score professional surfing better than them???? Right....

    So many times the judges' scores are a joke. It seems that no matter how incredibly you ride the wave, like 20+ seconds of mesmerising surfing, if you come unstuck on the pull-out manoeuvre (only) the score gets halved. Another time (yeah sure the take-off position has to be spot on) the surfer takes a drop pulls in, gets covered, kicks out. Ride takes 5-6 seconds. Scores a 10. That's patently ridiculous.

    No idea how they come up with those scores. Both surfers surf really well. I don’t see how Kelly needed a 9. Seems like he got a few low scores, it’s like what more do you want the guy to do?!?

  • @guyfromBR

    The whole thing is so stupid and surreal... Kelly simply pushed it beyond what the bunch of dunces on that Judges' Panel could understand and was punished by their sheer ignorance. They should ALL issue a public apology and retire from Judging from then on, to at least save their personal records from further scrutiny - or History will never forgive them. Mick being the impeccable character that he is, should watch it again and yield it to Kelly, too. In no way he won that Heat after that unbelievable aerial - and he'll know it right away, after a second viewing. I trust his Dignity to do it so. It's a heavy shame on those Judges and to hell with their so-called "criteria". Who's more important, them or those who push the boundaries - like Kelly Slater always did? Whenever a Genius appear, we should change the Rules to conform to Genius - NOT the other way around. WSL have now a great chance to prove they're not a joke.

    +guyfromBR Oh, give me a fucking break.... Dude, tone down the fonboi-ism, I know you love kelly, but this is just ridiculous. Newsflash, he's not going to win every heat, if you come to terms with that you'll enjoy watching surfing much more, and wont be curled up in a ball crying in the corner every time he gets eliminated. Kelly agreed with the judges, not you, so why don't you go get a tissue, dry those eyes off and move on with your life. There's plenty more awesome surfing coming up before Pipe.

    +Tim Blizzard You're a joke, poor "Blizzard of manure" guy. You call people "fanbois" but you're CLEARLY working for the WSL, as you've been pestering EACH AND EVERY ONE of the threads in which people with clear-reasoning minds questioning the laughable "4.17" you imbeciles gave to Kelly Slater. If you love the taste of their money or ____ (fill it up to your choice), it's up to you. Just don't try to impose it on others, 'cause to me and maybe ALL of us, you're just a nobody, a nothing about anything, Surfing or otherwise. You have NO Credentials to be respected in here. Now, get OUT of this thread as you've already been unmasked. Please, crawl back to the sewer you came from. Thanks. (This is my short reply, directed to socially dysfunctional morons like you, who can't understand a deeper text in any Language. Now you can go back to watch your "Friends" or "Lost" rerun...) Below is the more substantial reply, for those who are more Mentally & Spiritually developed. OºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºoOºo You're so insensitive to my point that your sheer demonstration of how limited and mediocre a so-called "human" could degrade himself into makes me cringe. Stop eating Meat, Sugar, MSG, etc. and stay away from any Microwave-operated device, as it's clearly affecting what's left of your Reasoning there. You clearly are one of those dunces I alluded to and, understandably so, react in your own shallow way. But I'll reply, nevertheless... Firstly, your overall patronizing tone of "know-it-all", or "the Commendatore", the "man" in charge, just shows how big-headed you are. As if you were some kind of a behind-the-curtains "genius", which possessed some relevant authority to show anything that'll improve Society and Life in any level. By your overall comment, it's clearly not the case. Secondly, it's amazing how you were unable to understand the whole meaning of my rant, which was directed towards the unjust grade of an exceptional performance, an unfair assessment perpetrated by those square-minded bureaucrats at the WSL Judging Panel, (although I'm aware they're not only on WSL but on everything else on this Matrix, of course). That poor excuse for a reasoning you've made above hints me that they might be related to you, 'cause the low-level and mediocrity of their choices seems to share the same origin and tone with yours, judging, again, by your "precious" comment, above. Now, if I like what Kelly Slater stands for? Of course I do, as I'm a Winner in Life, and always in touch with other REAL Winners like KS. Not "actors" and/or those "fake-celebs" corrupted Media use to push around. I mean Real People, whose actions changed History and upgraded Society. That kind of People you'll be only able to see from distance or in photographs via Google Search Engine. I just don't suck on him (as you evidently do), no matter how concealed is your envy of him (KS), as it's evident in the failed pretense that you "don't care", when you're clearly too bitter and conceited while seated on this donkey disguised as a fake high-horse of yours. Basic Psychology explains it. So, still about KS, he's naturally on my "team", of course, as in the "Law of Attraction" - basic Chemistry explains it, ask your teacher. Well, as a Winner I think he's Great, and an inspiration to the few Winners of this World, like myself - which obviously exclude those billions of low-level middlings as yourself. You're clearly envious of Kelly so much because he is someone whose immense accomplishments in Life fairly exceeds what people like you could do in a thousand years. Now, do you think I'm "crying curled up in a ball" here? Hahaha... Trust me, regardless of your Size & Weight, I bet I'm more capable to make you cry than that tiny appendix inside your skull is capable to even describe, let alone imagine. Do you want to accept the bet? I hope you'll take my word on that. I'm confident that you don't want to come to Rio de Janeiro to check it in person. You won't like it. Well, I suggest you go out of this mediocre "panel" there, seek to improve and to grow Mentally/Spiritually, start bit by bit to get in touch with Greatness, and perhaps in the next Incarnation you'll be able to get out of the corral and be a Man of Value. Then Life will smile on you - as it did on Kelly Slater. Just roll the dice... maybe there's still time for you...

    guyfromBR Bahahaha!!!!!!! Dude you're a total nutjob. You really think the WSL pays people to go around youtube threads, defending the judges? Seriously..... let me guess, you think the moon landing was faked too? 911 was an inside job? Elivis, I bet you think he's hiding away somewhere? Am i right? And now because I called you a fanboi, which you have demonstrated with that crazy rant of a post, you want to fight me, across the internet? You're a crazy person. I've been commenting in these threads because I don't have Pay TV and I missed Trestles and I wanted to watch the heats. And in every thread there are crazy people like you claiming world wide conspiracies to explain why Mick beat Medina, beat Kelly, beat Adriano. Of course it couldn't be because a 3x world champ simply outsurfed them? No, no way, that couldn't be possibly true, it has to be a conspiracy. Crazy how those judges arent part of a conspiracy when they gave kelly 10 point scores for single manoeuvres, but now, its all fucked. Sure it is buddy, sure it is.... You claim that the judges duped Kelly out of a score, when the man himself Kelly Slater has stated publicly that he thought the score was fair. Do you get that? KELLY THOUGHT THE SCORE WAS FAIR. I love Kelly, I was honoured to watch the bells final between him and mick in 2012, where he did that massive air. I'm a massive kelly fan, a massive Adriano fan, a massive Jon Jon fan. Honestly i'm just a fan of amazing surfing. You on the other hand, you aren't rational about any of this. You have your favourite guy and it doesn't matter what he actually does, or what his competitors do, you defend him even when he doesn't think anything went wrong. Lighten up dude, stop putting SOOOO much emphasis on who's winning and just enjoy amazing surfing. You'll be the happier person you obviously want to be, and wont react like a crazy person when something you dont like happens in a surfing event. Just a tip. ;)

    Tim Blizzard. In my defense I don't follow surfing much anymore I'm old school and therefore I am biased when it comes to surfers that can still destroy waves like slater in his mid 40s. Does. Yes I exaggerated giving him a 9. But judges way underscored that ride. I call that a pulled air simply because by the time he emerged out of the breaking whitewater he was on his feet. Fuck the technical bullshit his feet became unattached so fucking what he rode away from it and to call it a failed attempt is ridiculous because he was pushing his skills to the limit lost control. For a millisecond them did what was needed to recover and ride on. Any one can see he pulled it and didn't land on his belly he hit his knees on the board.

    Ahh thanks for reminding me why i don't watch the WSL tour. Just a bunch of great surfers being constrained and punished for surfing outside the box. 4 years later and the WSL scoring system is ever as inconsistent and seems more irrelevant than ever. I'll stick to watching weird and wonderful clips of free-surfers taking creative lines - hopefully Kelly joins Mick amongst their ranks soon.

    I was like oh Kelly is bustin an air, oh the board blew away, ha the board landed perfectly but Kelly did not, wtf Kelly is standing up. I don't care what the judges said the crowd was vocal about it, they were into it and I would go as far as saying that it was inspiring, sometimes I will watch comp videos until I borderline get sick of seeing cutback, bottom turn, snap. So if you don't think Kelly's ride was good then you are a stiff.

    Read the fucking comments, listen to the crowds reaction, there's definitely some bullshit fucking bias here. Seems like the more talent you have, the more critical the haters get. Need some new judges and here in 2019 its the same old shit. Worst contest ever. They even say how much "Freakish Talent" Slater has on each wave but for some reason they think his "mistakes" aren't worth judging when they are better than anyone else's regular surfing. There's a reason the world's best surfers aren't on the WSL.
