Kel-Tec SU-16 Field Strip

Спорт

Detailed take down and field strip of the Kel-Tec SU-16a. The instructions here should be applicable to taking down any SU-16 series rifle. The field strip for this rifle is moderately involved. Simple hand tools like a hammer and punch can make it easier.

Thank you for not going on any tangents while breaking your rifle down. Quick, detailed, and no bulls#!t. Perfect

Very helpful vid. My guess would be Kel-Tec was aiming to keep the weight ridiculously low with their gas-tube design.

First of all, Thanks for the video. It is MUCH better than the documentation provided with the rifle. There are few more review videos now. I have been following this rifle for a long time. I have seen the improvements to it and now find it is worth getting for me. I like niche guns. BUT, one has to remember this is not a combat rifle, or a target rifle. You can use it for hunting up to the limitations of the rifle. You can also use it for plinking or as a truck/camping/survival rifle. Best of all, you don't need (in Minnesota) a permit to purchase this rifle since it does not have a lot of the "black features."

I agree. Nice gun, but not an AR15 in terms of durability. The weak point is the plastic hinge.

Great vid of a gun that I took to the range for the first time today. First .223 I'd fired, and that spicy round semi-automatic, plus the innovative design of the Kel-Tec, made it instantly my go-to rifle for the bush and home defense.

Thank you for the good teardown video of the SU16. The book that comes with the rifle does not suffice, in fact, it's rather confusing. I think a video is in order and this one does the trick.

Thanks a lot for this video. Would you do another video where you break it down and then show your process for cleaning and exactly which parts you lube? I'm new to rifle maintenance and would really appreciate advice on how to properly clean and oil the SU-16.

+YomYestreen I clean and oil the actual bolt itself and clean the barrel. That's about it. You can throw some oil on the pins for future take down ease.

What I'd like to know is how often the gas system should be cleaned. I just put 40 rounds through mine (brand new) a few days ago and just did the barrel and bolt cleaning.

Thanks for the laugh and making the video so I can show my nephew how easy this gun is to take down without having to drive over and show him on my gun. + You gave him a good laugh too

By no fault of my own I discovered that you can unscrew the piston rod from the bolt carrier. This seems much easier to deal with than popping out a tiny pin. On a side note, I seen some vids where the bolt smacked the rear of the receiver and broke it out. Seems to happen when using 5.56. Would replacing the recoil spring with a slightly stiffer one help prevent this? One guy didnt get any response from Kel Tec at all. That is surprising.

+Bounty B. Wolf That's a pretty good find on the unscrewing the piston. That pin is a pain. Replacing the springs with a stiffer one may help if that's an issue. Just have to make sure it doesn't effect cycling in both 223 and 556. I'm sure a lot of owners would upgrade just to have peace of mind.

+Kondition1 Bought a new spring and thicker butt stock pad from Kel Tec. I'm going to replace the solid metal pin on the piston with a roll pin so it stays put. Seems like some glue or something on the bolt carrier was supposed to keep the piston from unscrewing. Welding would work better. Shot fine until it warmed up and started having extraction issues. Dirty chamber. Brake cleaner and a stiff .223 chamber brush plus a .223 bore snake. Its all clean now. Going to try brass and if it cycles a couple mags without issues then trying steel again and see if the same problem returns. Older steel had a varnish coating. newer steel has a polymer, supposed to be more resistant to melting and causing extraction issues. Id rather shoot steel and pay $100 less per 1000 rounds.

For the slow kids in the class like me, I need arrows pointing to exactly where the "tabs", and other areas of the rifle that are critical for assembly. With an all black rifle it is hard for the viewer(lighting?) to contrast the small intricate parts like the cam and when you were taking the charging handle on and off. Again, that's just me. Otherwise I liked your video.
