@@uhtredragnorson9930 Obviously not! But I’m just thinking ahead. Starmer has pitched his campaign on convincing the disgruntled Tories and the swing voters. In the predicted situation that he will win, he will already be massively unpopular on the first day. Imagine putting up with his nasal whine and his barefaced lies for a full term of office. The essential thing is to aim at achieving some kind of proportional representation once he’s there, to try to avoid this in the future. Unfortunately that’s not likely to be on his agenda and it’s clear that he hasn’t thought about doing much else for the country. He’s offering Tory-Lite, but unfortunately it’s the best realistic option that we have.

Rutger Bregman talks about the difference in trauma between ww2 vets and Vietnam. It was the fact that too many ww2 soldiers were shooting above their enemies heads (they didn’t have it in them to kill), only around 20% even fired their weapons, most deaths were artillery or longer distance. By Vietnam they had more psychological aspects incorporated into basic training e.g. ‘kill kill kill’ drills. The fire rate was higher in Vietnam and the trauma of reconciling that with their humanity was what caused the ptsd

    1. Safe routes are as close as you get to limiting people smuggling. More importantly, this seems to be the longest running moral panic I've witnessed and still nobody is concerned about rich tax dodgers and their profound wealth extraction from the country that actually IS causing the problems people are blaming on immigration. 2. Dating apps can already get you a connection but their function is to extract money from loneliness. Michael, your position is a very privileged one - most of us are out in the cold. 3. Tech only does what we tell it to. Modern capitalism is built on inequality drivers, so the tech is too.

Within the "medium term" horizon for migration and logistics, it will probably become necessary to move people away from the typical "hot zones" during the warm season, so there's that. If you're thinking of locating large numbers of immigrants in rural Scotland, you're going to have to create jobs for them and houses to live in. The reason the south of England is so crowded is partly down to internal migration from exactly those kind of places because of insufficient economic activity. If so, great! The opportunity for huge expansion of rural green energy production in Scotland, just requires investment. There obviously remains potential for more remote working so white collar work could be anywhere, not just a desk in London. And of course there is huge demand in the care sector, especially in rural places where demographic ageing is most acute (partly due to the brain drain to the metropol). Please keep housing affordable and pay the carers properly or that last bit might not work.

As someone not living in the UK, it is striking to me how the debate on immigration has shifted and no one is even questioning anymore the idea that immigration is bad for the UK. It's all about efficiency, "humane" versus "inhumane", etc., without anyone raising their hand and saying "hang on, immigration is actually good for us!". Similarly, using anti-terror laws and MI5 to deal with people wanting to live in your country? What?? This is exactly what we were warning about 20 years ago when anti-terror laws were introduced, namely that they would not be limited to actual terrorism but would become a tool in the hands of an increasingly unprincipled state. Democratic, liberal society is falling apart before our eyes.

Any talk of "stopping" people smugglers is, imo, a complete joke if you're not going to address the elephant in the room as to why these smugglers exist. You don't need to be a genius to realise that if in order to apply for asylum/whatever, you have to be standing on British Isle soil, then people are going to attempt to stand on British Isle soil. This entire problem, people smugglers et all, would disappear completely if these applications were just processed in the nearest embassy as they should be. And it's important to point out that processing an application does not automatically mean accepting, so even a dumb Conservative hardcore anti-immigration pleb shouldn't have any problem with processing abroad, even if their immigration policy would be hardline rejection to 99% of those applications. Honestly, that people continue to waste their time debating this red herring of a policy, while our politicians devote weeks of the year finding ways to waste our money solving a problem that could be immediately resolved by just running the government like it's meant to be run, is and of itself why we see nothing ever being done.

Hopefully Aaron will mention this (I'm typing this pre-Aaron response) ... A effective measure to stop the boats is to have asylum offices on the continent and in areas where most people are coming from, so they can claim there without having to use the boats to get here to make a claim. However illegal it is, the smugglers are still running a business and if a large chunk of a businesses aren't available to them, the business will struggle to survive. Thus they'll prioritise other countries, rather than this one, so those looking to come here "illegally" will find it much harder to acquire the services of smugglers. Would that stop it all, no, but it would substantially reduce it and thereby substantially reduce dangerous incidents in the channel and of course, provide substantially reduced "illegal immigration" figures, which makes for good political mumbo jumbo.

Peter Walsh also said World at One that there's nothing to suggest safe and legal routes would reduce numbers attempting to cross in small boats - is this guy an expert worth listening to or not?
