Keep Looking: The Life Changing Secret to Reading the Bible

A biologist once told a story about his Harvard professor named Louis Agassiz, who taught him a simple habit to help him see more than he ever dreamed. The lesson he learned is also the secret to lifelong and life-changing Bible reading: keep looking.
One reason we see so little when we read the Bible is that we do not give ourselves long enough to look. John Piper shares the story “Agassiz and the Fish” in his new book “Reading the Bible Supernaturally” (desiringgod.org/books/reading.... In the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something miraculous happens: God gives us new eyes to see more of him - if we are willing to slow down and keep looking.

Yes! You've got it! :D We don't want to be like the Pharisees and end up being more about the Scriptures themselves than about the One that the Scriptures point us to - Jesus. :) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life." - John 5:39-40 ESV

That's right! I have found some wonderful things in God's word but I realize I have barely scratched the surface. I will keep looking until I see Him for who He is. All satisfying, all-wise, all-precious, all-just, all-good and just all together lovely as we sing in one gospel song :)

This is fantastic anime, Mr. Canedo! & Team! Congratulations sirs! Curious timing, just finished a Miyazaki video. Yours is way better! (Must be another, God thing, - keeps happening to me, God watching, helping me, telling me, this way, stay on "his" path. LOL! Anime arrow!) Pastor John's teaching is just like anime - God's words light up on the screen, meaningful, fill with life before my eyes. A wonderous thing - I "see", really see color & motion & life. The living word of God! Praising His Holy Name, Christ Jesus! Amen!

One commentator’s helpfully posted a version of the story that this is based on: people.bethel.edu/~dhoward/resources/Agassizfish/Agassizfish.htm The answer is there. But personally, I didn’t feel that finding out this fact made it easier to see how the message applies to the Bible, what sort of things we should be looking for in a passage. Maybe the point of the message is just that finding that truth needs the dedication and the spending of time towards it, before it will “click”, and before it will actually feel worth discovering.

I liked this video, but two things bothered me: one, that we never hear what “one of the most obvious features” about the fish is; two, that I was not, at the end of a three-minute video, truly convinced that the fish could be worthy of all that time studying. But to address those things: perhaps one of the main points to learn here is that not even a skilfully produced video like this is going to persuade anyone about the intricacies of the fish are worth studying; and in that vein, this obvious fact about the fish probably isn’t going to impress many people, if they’ve spent so little time looking at the fish for themselves. In this sense, the fish does serves as a good analogy for the Bible.
