Yuta knows his stuff. I can get how always saying that textbooks are bad can get annoying, but respect where respect is due. Yuta understands a lot about teaching languages. Honestly, let's just enjoy both Yuta's and Kaname's content. They're both talented creators who are helping us achieve our goals.

This has quickly become my favorite channel for learning Japanese. I love all the dialogue and how Kaname-sensei always manages to put out videos about grammar points I have been eager to learn more about.

Interesting point, as "so" generally means that there is a result coming up, which comes from an initial condition. ("I received my passport, so now I can travel to Japan.") However, "so" does not really have that meaning in your example...similar to how "けど" has a general meaning of "but"...but...it's also more flexible than that.

That's a great analogy. We have far more of these kinds of spoken expressions in our language than we realize. These types of expressions can be hard to learn for ESL students.

I was just about to say the same thing! Definitely thought of how English speakers use "so," like this while I was listening to the video. "Someone just gave me a melon, so...do you wanna eat it?"

It's quite an impressive and heartwarming feat of Kaname Naito, that he can explain how to understand his native language, in a second language, targeted directly in the way he knows we would have trouble to understand. He has mastered not just English, but the common mindset behind it けど, お疲れ様 でした

Kaname's aura when teaching shows that he truly cares. He's not here to tell you something you might already know, he's here to tell you about complex japanese social dynamics, such as the common usage of the phrase "けど", what it means and how you can respond to it. Visual explanations, real life scenarios, even a full on transcribed version in the comments, he TRULY wants people to learn. Whenever a new video pops up, I genuinely get myself a drink, sit down, and spend atleast 30 minutes translating the sentences myself after watching the video, trying to understand the reasons for why things are the way they are. Beautiful execution, I can't wait for more. You've got yourself a life-time fan, Kaname-san.

Thank you for the explanation sensei, For me, けどmeans "though". Japanese likes to end their word with けど, just like in English where we too usually end our word with "though".

It's popular lol, Japanese people use this all the time. It's so ubiquitous that after a while I don't even really hear it anymore, I'm just used to it being a part of a very large percentage of sentences.

I love the explanations in this channel since there are many videos explaining particles, words or expressions that are hardly ever explained in classroom either because it's too difficult or because it's a "you have to live and feel to understand" situation. Keep up the great work!

Also, I find it funny how often I write or speak sentences which would require the けど in my mother language - in other words, give context and then ask the main point

I've diligently studies 日本語 for 6 months now and I honestly have hard time trying to grasp the usage of this 「けど」since the materials I study to only gave the literal translation "but" but doesn't give further explanations if used on scenarios like this. This channel are undoubtedly my most favorite reference to study! 要さん、教えてくれてありがとう！😁

Thank you so very much for these wonderfully thorough and extremely helpful lessons in Japanese. Many of us in the US who have even taken college courses in Japanese language are not taught the nuances of the language, and when there is a phrase that does not translate well, it is often difficult to find an explanation as it is impossible to provide enough examples to the internet in order to learn these phrases. Even when it is possible, hearing it being said in native Japanese accent gives another level of understanding - seeing a phrase or sentence in a book and memorizing the word is still entirely different than hearing it and being able to recognize it. Oftentimes when it's at the end of the sentence you can think of it as meaning "though". Even in English, "though" and "but" are often interchangeable in terms of meaning, and "though" can be placed at the end of a sentence.

@@Arigator2 There is no difference between those. "Dakedo" is just "da" + "kedo". "Desukedo" is just "desu" + "kedo". They're not separate words from "kedo". If you want to connect a noun or -na adjective to "kedo", you have to use "da" or "desu". That's it.
