I'm a 15 year Linux user and I still use breeze dark on Arch, just with my own dark background. I just want something that works, doesn't burn my eyes out and doesn't waste a lot of screen space so that I can get on with using the system. I'm also not really a fan of floating docks etc because buttons are easier to click on if they go right to the edge, as you can't go past them.

Niccolo will probably hate me for this; I use a riced version of KDE Neon with the Lightly widget style, Inter as the global font, a custom dark colour scheme, Fluent icon theme (modified) and a custom Latte Dock layout which is almost the same as the default KDE panel. Please don't hurt me... D:

@@georgehelyar I whole heartedly agree. About what you said about Fitts Law, Latte dock redirects the input from the corners into the relevant parts inside the panel, so you would never have any problem you don't have with panels in Latte, even if floating. ( Although I prefer not to use Latte, because sometimes I need that resources )

It's sad that a lot of people give meaningless criticism like saying it's ugly or horrible without explaining why., this his review was very fair, I have watched a few of his videos and it seems they always are. The devs are good. It's the community that's hard to deal with. Most of the users of Plasma are Arch users. Maybe that's why? When someone say Plasma could be more minimal, the toxic fans would just say "Go use GNOME or something, KDE is not for you". Which kinda leaves people salty. So most users either avoid the community and giving feedback or just say it's bad and run for their life.

Perhaps it's better to rethink "categories" in settings as "tags", so that certain settings can appear in multiple "tags"? As for discoverability of features, KDE apps can do like Vivaldi and present preconfigured application UI layouts (e.g. minimalist -> light -> standard -> productive -> poweruser -> overkill) to hint to users what advanced features are available.

I just recently come around to your channel, and I must say that I really like the videos that you do as it's a good insight into KDE and the development behind it. I have been using KDE myself since around 2004ish back with Slackware, and it's always been the one desktop environment that I have loved the most, yet used the least for whatever reason. I'd really like to contribute to the project in some way (except financially because i'm poor) but I have never found the right way that I could. The things I love about KDE Plasma are the looks, since plasma's release I think the look of KDE is probably one of the best in class for linux environments at the moment and is probably one of the most stable and customisable, which is one of the reasons I yearn for a good experience with it. I love most of the applications (I have my issues with Dolphin, but it is what it is) and I really genuinely do wish I could use it as my primary desktop environment. Some of the things that I wish it had, or that it does have that would make it easier to use: 1.1) Ability to easily and quickly swap between different desktop layouts. Maybe this is a thing that can be done, but I really want to be able to try out a "Mac style" layout but the problem with editing it to do such, it doesn't allow you to easily go back and you could end up with a broken and / or non default desktop. The only way I have the ability to go back was to delete my KDE folder in my profile. 1.2) Add more "Mac OS" style features. You can achieve some of this with Plasma addons but it would be nice if it didn't rely on a 3rd party to get some basic desktop functionality available. Ideally it would be nice is there was a way to have a basic "Mac OSX layout" or a "Windows 11 Layout" and just be able to swap all of the widgets and items around so that it has a similar functionality. This would make it trivial for users of those other OSes to be able to navigate KDE, and allow those of us that go between, ability to keep the desktop fresh while able to return if need be. 2) An OS like KDE Neon, but based on a non LTS version of Ubuntu. Currently KDE Neon is based on LTS Ubuntu and I have to choose whether I want an up to date KDE, or an up to date rest of the system. The other alternatives are Manjaro or OpenSUSE, but I have had poor experiences with them and I prefer Apt distros. 3) This one I know requites testing, but fixing some of the inexplicable bugs, or have increased interaction with the community. On a previous install one of the things that would constantly happen is that the "check for updates" feature of the plasma ui wouldn't say there were updates unless I manually open discover and check for updates that way. All in all, I love KDE and I think you guys do amazing work, I just hope I can find a solution that allows me to have a refined user experience for KDE along with a good experience for everything else. :)

KDE is my go-to desktop for any distro, I'm currently using it on Arch. The wayland-plasma-session implementation has matured to the point of being daily drivable. But as a laptop user, I'd love to see two improvements to go along with wayland integration. 1. the synaptics touchpad driver that was used before libinput is built on xorg. I use this driver because it lets me autodisable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected. This feature is not available on libinput as far as I know. Maybe there needs to be a port of the xorg synaptics driver to wayland, maybe libinput needs to include the feature, or maybe a driver needs to be written from the ground up. 2. I like using VNC when I'm away from my laptop. Krfb has (recently, I think) added support for wayland using pipewire, but the performance isn't good at all. Krfb needs to include more granular settings and, in my opinion, needs to be in feature-parity with X11VNC. Once these issues are fixed, I will gladly run wayland as default. Other than that, I love KDE to bits.

I distro/DE hopped a lot at the beginning (like most new Linux users). I landed on KDE Plasma and fell in love with it almost instantly! As it has evolved over the years, the only time I was ever feeling really disappointed was when the "scroll on desktop to switch virtual desktops" feature was either removed or broken. Well, it's back and I have nothing but the most respect for the team behind it. Side note: I have been previewing some other distros/DE in VM, just to see what things look and feel like outside of KDE. Many are nice! None can compare to KDE (Manjaro), for me. Wait, you're the one who made Breeze? Thank you for it, I've been using the Twilight variety since coming back to KDE, it's solid, readable, and I like it a lot. Keep up the good work! 👍 The one bit I don't like is the hamburger menus, in honesty. They belong on mobile, as a necessary measure to conserve screen real estate - but where there is screen real estate to be used, I think it should be avoided. They add an extra step to the wanted setting, and are, very subjectively, counterintuitive to me on desktop.

I will summarize my experience as follows: Pros of KDE: You can customize EVERYTHING! Cons of KDE: You can customize EVERYTHING! KDE is fun for those who see their system as a kit car, a project that never ends and must be constantly maintained and tweaked. Unfortunately, KDE is not really set up for fire-and-forget or appliance like approaches to using a computer, which i think that's where GNOME, with all their shortcomings and resource bloat, ends up succeeding.

(I have a pretty weird setup where I hide all window decorations and only close/manipulate windows by shortcuts or rarely by using a modifier key and a mouse) so the fact it lets me do that is pretty cool. I'm sort of half way between a tiling and free floating windowing system. The multi monitor experience has come a long way in the years I have been using it. The only thing I am really feeling like I'm missing in KDE is the last time I tried to use Wayland... It was not great. Windows didn't seem to remember their last position and size from before they were closed was the thing I noticed most. I would really like to see KDE evolve past Xorg, but I don't even know if the problem is Wayland or Kwin and how it interacts with Wayland.

I think maybe KDE should reconsider the monolithic approach. I love KDE, I use it myself, because it uses much less resources than GNOME does, for some reason. My system is old and GNOME shell runs at around 15% CPU … But the Apps really are not that great, and from what I gather in this video, maybe the reason for that is that there are not too many maintainers. Could it be that maybe the code is just old and really hard to maintain? Maybe smaller apps (UNIX philosophy anyone?) would make it easier to maintain the apps and attract more developers? Just a thought. I mean you said it yourself, comparing Korganizer to Kalendar. "It may be easier […] to do these applications from scratch."

Here is a thought about the System Settings. I like having ALL of the options available, but I can see why some users might find that to be overwhelming. How about a switch on the menu that would do a "SIMPLE" menu and an "EXPERT" menu with all the granularity that some of us love? The search bar could still find a setting in EXPERT no matter which menu you have selected. :-)

One major thing I'd love to see for KDE plasma is a multi-monitor enhancement which would be allowing us to mirror or "sync" panels across different monitors. Personally I run 3 monitors, but even with 2 this was a bit of a hassle. I like to keep all my taskbars identical, so any change be it a new application pinned, the order changed, or a new widget added, needs to be done 3 times instead of just once, which can be kinda frustrating since it's a bunch of steps to get into the edit mode for each panel. It would be great if we could have all of them linked so any change will just adjust all of them!

I've been using Linux on my main laptop for a few months, firstly Linux Mint (Cinnamon) and then Fedora Workstation 34 (Gnome). From the start I've been interested in KDE Plasma, being so close in interface to WIndows 10, tough when I try it, it's so complex and basic settings are so hard to find that I gave up pretty fast. Some tips about a stable and easy to use KDE distro (no Arch pls) and a good way to understand its vastness of customizability? Also, how's the state of Wayland on KDE Plasma? I really like with the smoothness and fractional scaling compatibility of Wayland, and it would be hard for me to get back to X11.

I absolutely love KDE... On my laptop... On my multi monitor desktop it's a really weird experience where the same wallpaper for all monitors is a real hassle to do(at least for a new user perspective). Applications tend to bounce around and widgets on one screen gets messed up every time the monitor goes to sleep. However if you have a one monitor setup, it's fantastic. This might work the way I want it in KDE Neon, I have not tried that distro yet. I'm on Pop!_OS at my desktop, simply because Nvidia drivers worked right out of the box and it's given me zero stress with my multi monitor setup as well. I know that the multi monitor thing is more a X11 problem and not a KDE problem and that might be solved by switching to wayland, and I might do that in the future. A nice out of the box solution would be great for new users though. Keep up the good work with KDE and your channel, I'm looking forward to seeing the development in the future, it's come a very long way from my experience with it way back on SuSE linux for PPC on my PowerBook G5 :P

It's really refreshing to see someone making actual good faith criticisms and even more so to see someone earnestly seeking them out and responding to them like you did. That said, I strongly disagree that "dated visuals" are a bad thing per se, but rather just a personal preference. And even then, if they had to choose, most people would certainly pick consistent & functional aesthetics over "trendy" aesthetics. We'd much rather the former be prioritized over the latter.

One of my criticisms with KDE is that when I created a new panel at the top of the screen, remove the volume control and start menu from the bottom panel add them back to the top panel, my volume keys on my keyboard stop working and my super key stopped bringing up the start menu. The super key, I get why, but for the volume keys, why are my volume keys tied directly to items on a panel rather than directly to the volume control?

Can the dev team implement tiling to the settings and the capability to switch the response time, and the layout , and the tiling distance etc, I tried kwin tiling when I used plasma last time, It bugged out and flipped me when I tried to use yakuake, same with gnome, a dropdown terminal was not really an option at all, it would break or it would break the tiling till after a reboot. There has been a lot of problems with the Gnome-shell and mutter for me, so I'm seriously rethinking the whole situation, and I wonder why I switched to a debian based system, because I don't like it, and I do not like gnome, but Pop! is a bit different. I love the launcher, intelligent dock and dynamic desktops.

KDE is my main DE in OpenSuse and after using it over years it has improved a lot, but I think KDE is way better in OpenSuse as it is in other distributions. I love how much I can customize it, everytime I use Gnome in any other distro I feel annoyance first because I NEED to install some extensions to make it work, buen when I go back to KDE I feel so glad I can set stuff however I want without installing dozen of extensions, also out of the box it is almost perfect, the only other DE that makes me feel the same is Cinnamon but KDE is more customizable and I like it more

I'm eager to switch to KDE, but I keep bouncing back because of the same reason Nick has: the DE might be super flexible, customizable and awesome, but it's inconsistent, and applications are not really curated (so you don't know which apps would keep a similar UX to your DE). Last time I tried it (Fedora 35 KDE spin, everything default) I kept having issues like settings reverting back after a reboot (layout, applets on the bottom bar moving around). Really hyped about consistency update. I don't like many things the team at Gnome are doing/saying, but I have to give them praise for "gnome circle" and a curation of selected apps that gel perfectly with Gnome's default UX: Think of it as a "Gnome desktop starter pack". KDE used to be king at this but it got lost somewhere after KDE4.
