@@Niarbeht And how the UI at no point explains what different keyboard shortcuts are. It should be in the UI of the app itself, you shouldn't have to go to Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts everytime. It's kind of .. Ridiculous, in all honesty. And even there, the majority of shortcuts are not explained for specific apps. E.g. There's no explanation anywhere in the GUI of Nautilus that "Ctrl + L" let's you type in the path bar.

that still sucks, because you can't choose a file name and extension when creating the file. rather, you have to create it, search it and then rename it, which is a huge pain in the butt if you want to create multiple files or work in large directories.

To tell the truth, Gnome's implementation is way more simple and straightforward. In Plasma, one has to go to some hidden location, create a .desktop file there, then go to another location and create a real template which .desktop refers to. That's the opposite of being user friendly, especially for newcomers.

@Mr. Rich B.O.B why? that's a terrible idea. Atom is dying, imagine you built on top, you would have to either start on a new platform of inherit the maintenance of the dead project. I never thought of that as smart. Gnome has libraries for building any app that goes through your head, any missing bits would be simple to add. Why would I use another platform that uses web components to build desktop apps?

I really like KDE for my desktop PC because it presents all the options you need right in front of you. I like Gnome on my laptop because it tucks away things you don’t need a lot and saves space. The trackpad gestures really make the shell for me. I would not install Gnome on my desktop PC because I want more features and customization than Gnome offers with installing a slew of extensions. My main gripe about Gnome is the inflexibility. I hate that the only way to change/customize anything is an unsupported hack that'll likely break with every update. I get that they want to control the end user experience, but I don't like their interface. The app indicator in the top panel is a useless waste of space, and clicking on it yields inconsistent results. Sometimes it'll say Help, sometimes it'll have Quit and Help, sometimes it acts like the File menu. A Global Menu makes more sense to me. *_Any_* widget makes more sense than just the name of the app I'm running. It's not even a task manager, so you can't click on the app indicator to switch to other running apps. It's quite literally useless, and yet it's required to be there. Can't move the clock. Can't add anything else to the top panel unless it's an extension that'll likely break. I personally can't live like that. I also can't stand that the wallpaper picker in Gnome can't create a slideshow. You have to open Shotwell, create an album, and assign the album as a wallpaper, but then the transition between pictures is super choppy. Half-baked, unintuitive, and restrictive. That's pretty much the theme of using Gnome for me. I switched to KDE not long after the release of Gnome 3, before Mate really matured, and now it's too late to turn back. I'm spoiled by KDE's freedom. I applaud you for sticking with it, and for finding things about it to like.

GNOME does seem to me as a more "elegant" DE than kinda "cluttered" KDE but I still cannot get convinced to switch just because of all those minor annoyances that in the end lower the overall user experience very much. I mean - I don't get why some simple features aren't just available by default there but require extensions that may break after an update. And although I understand many of the design decisions like lack of desktop icons, at the same time e.g. that issue with zooming seems just ridiculous. Anyway, gonna stick with Plasma so far, even though it's not perfect and a little bit glitchy sometimes.

Good to have an update! I think your problem with gedit is that you think it is for programming when it is just like the mac text editor or notepad on windows. It is just for making quick notes and stuff, not developing. Also I have never had need to magnify text in gedit. I think this is due again to using it as a substitute for vscode or something. I don't ever create empty files in Files, I always just create a file in an app first and then save it, for me it seems strange to save a file first and then open it. I haven't done that on any computer since RISC OS in the 80s. Even when using macs or windows I have never seen the need to do this, but if you do there is a folder called templates in your home file where you can put empty files that will then appear in the Files' context menu to create new files. How long before your Elementary review comes out?

Years ago, when I checked out Gnome I had the exact same impressions. The apps are less power user friendly, less featured and you have to live with some weird design decisions. I understand, that they want to have less customizability to increase out of the box user friendlyness for inexperienced users, but it does not fit my needs in that case. If I need to chase which Shell plugin or extension I need to install to get a certain behaviour, then usability for me as a user suffers. I dig Gnomes design, however.

Open in terminal Nano write your new text file save. Or open text editor and new. GNOME is all about simplicity to humans so less menu option the easier the choices. Also for the best Gnome feeling I would try Fedora as they go basic GNOME while other add broken customisation Ubuntu being the worse for butchered Gnome DE. One Extension I recommend if you a mouse user is Vertical over view make workspace switching more logical and follow the up and down movement of the mouse wheel. also moving the dock to right had side means no interference of full screen app windows scroll bars if you place a hot-side/hot-corner mouse swipe on the right side, because on bottom or left you can often trigger a swipe by accident on smaller screens, Like the chime bar in W8.1 which made it a shit show of an OS for small screen and Excel sheet work. I pushing for them to make the extension in the setting at start up after install. Will not upgrade to 42 until the extension is covered. Blue my shell is very layout and Theme set to Adwaita theme. Changing the theme break it some times and the App transparency and Menu fails Bug has been report you get ghosting around them on certain theme. For a good GNOME Life avoid UBUNTU most the extension will be painful as they heavily butchered GNOME 41. Dash to dock is a good extension but is break at time if mixed with the vertical extension I love so until it work well it is a dead extension to me, as it mainly is for Ubuntu layout and theme anyway. Icon accenting and default dark modes for system theming are coming. Then each theme will have both dark and light and all backgrounds will have both dark and light version. But I am guessing it will still allow custom images for background like now. I also now prefer dnf package manger as I find with Fusion and Flathub I have more stable version of app I liked on Ubuntu which don't have a .RPM yet in Fedora's main repo. But the main reason I like GNOME and Fedora shit move fast and just in the time I have been using it. the DE GUI has massively move forward. KDE I like but to my it still feel a bit Microsoft in it lay out and workings. Granted it is very good to customisible their isn't a setting missing but for just jumping on and getting work done it is to details at time to many setting to set, last time I tried it I spent 4 days just mastering the DE setting. Fedora starts very basic and simple and every part is added as a personally extension as you go along and work on that DE move it like an Easter hunt each Extension is like a gold cover chocolate egg. With chicken laying new egg each day. Just as I thing I know every possible mode I find another help extension add to the list. Plus if something break I switch off all extension and logically try the broken app adding one extension after another till I find the broken of incompatible extension. Fedora doesn't break often as a base because it DE is so pure basic GNOME. again Ubuntu add their own theme and more like snaps etc that break things to often add is why I started looking at other distro's I like the their version of GNOME at the time, but it broke so often as you add more extensions, plus they toke so long to take up Wayland too. Which I don't now why but my Vega GPU did not like Xorg based DE's to technically for my level of skills, but I switch to Fedora and wayland no more GNOME flickering or artifice. As most Gnome app run in Wayland I never use Xorg out side very old PC's which are for its time and won't run either GNOME or KDE because of hardware limitations. I like to use XFCE, LXDE or Deepin on those PC's I put Linux on and distro. Keep using GNOME it, it grows on you but try Fedora like SUSE less chefs in the kitchen make for a better dish! UBUNTU so big there is some many trash apps and people giving script kiddie out dated scripts or forums with fixes from 10 years ago and doesn't even work anymore that way because Linux has evolved massively over that time, Find the strait help no overload of Fedora help pages great as they have someone to maintain it and take down out of date things. Update cycles are good and testing good too.

The idea of creating templates is really annoying, they should at least leave some files here, but once you "get it" it's ok! You put only the necessary. Yeah, Nautilus is too "featureless", but it's rock solid. I had so many bugs on Dolphin and Thunar which makes me feel ok with it. I didn't like GNOME 3, but I tried GNOME 41 on Fedora 35, with the initial idea of using the less extensions as possible (I only use that sound switcher, which should be default and now I need to use GSConnect too). And boy, now I'm a huge fan of it, I completely understand what they want to do, they are really brave with their decisions. I discovered that I don't need a panel or dock everywhere, sometimes I open a ton of windows, it's a lot easier to find a specific window using the "Activities" menu. I don't need icons on the desktop too, it's easier to find on Activities, and If I need a specific folder, I just use the bookmark on Nautilus. About GEdit, yeah, Kate is a lot better. To be honest, Kate is one of most powerful tool on KDE, pretty underrated.

Anyway, this happens in Nautilus 41 or lower. Apparently they are changing this behavior in Gnome 42 (Nautilus 42) and it will show an option to create a new file.

Default for TAB is eight characters. It's not weird, it's the standard. E.g. Wikipedia "These were manually set to match the pre-printed forms that were loaded into the printer. In practice, settable tab stops were rather quickly replaced with fixed tab stops, de facto standardized at every multiple of eight characters horizontally, and every six lines vertically." But then, Wikipedia also mentions "Disagreements between programmers about what size tabs are correct, and whether to use tabs at all, are common." :)

I like Gnome a lot, BUT there are some over simplifications, that are really annoying. The creation of new file is enabled just when , text, bash script, html etc, you have to manual put a file of each kind inside the folder $HOME/Templates. And will not be always Templates in every language, because of the translations (which I never got acustumed to: why note symlynks?). In Brazilian Portugue it is Modelos. Not have volume control of apps handy is VERY annoying. Not have a tray is annoying. And sometimes, like you showed, more clicks instead of making things just simple. Widgets from KDE/Plasma are wonderful. I tested 5.24 and widget would make Gnome so much better, instead of us using extension that break each new release. Gedit has use spaces instead of tabs Preferences -> Editor. But Gedit will go away on Gnome36 replace by Gnome Text ( I think it's the name), which has less features and has no plugin, as Gedit has, to improved as far as I tested.

Use vscode, gedit is for very light text editing, kate isn’t very well suited for code as well i’d say. You can turn vscode into an IDE depending on what you’re working on. Works great for dotnet, typescipt, html, css, python, bash etc - and you get ide functionalities like a debugger, intellisense etc Think of gedit as notepad in windows, can you code in it? Sure, should you? Nah

VSCode is more like the jetbrains suite, but better, faster and is open source lol. Cancelled my yearly subscription to jetbrains ultimate cause of vscode, never going back Not here to start an IDE war btw, if it works for you then it does

GNOME is really good and polished DE but one thing that absolutely bothers me is how poorly it handles multiple monitors. First of all why don't allow me to have multiple panels on multiple monitors? Second thing is my external display is lagging sometimes for whatever reason because this does not happen on other DEs. Lastly why my games go black screen when they are focused on external monitor. Like what the hell?

At least let the user know what's being downloaded. Or what's happening so it doesn't look like it's stuck on "Checking for updates". I switched to Manjaro because some other theme bugs and flatpak apps looking alien and so on. So far, KDE Plasma has grown. Wayland scaling is still kinda borked but it's still good. Looking forward to interesting Changes.

You have to understand many of those things are user specific. Yes gnome is less customizable. Plasma is very customizable, but thats it's main drawback as well. Whenever I tried to use plasma, I got annoyed by the ugly menus you see basically everywhere. Plasma has many options, but no option to remove the easy access of those options. All these fancy KDE shortcuts are nice until you need to install and use some input method to enter Japanese or Chinese. Then suddenly you realise how bad it is implemented in Plasma - one have to create some really odd key combinations to switch between 3 languages one of which is controlled by IME, without having those combinations clashing with Plasma standard shortcuts like Ctrl+Shift+whatnot. The main advantage of Gnome for me is that it treats input methods as just another keyboard layout, a bit complex one, but still. If Plasma had a similar feature, then a point of having cool Kate shortcuts would've been valid.
