I own this bike and use it for mostly city commute and pleasure rides. I absolutely love it.

You can get engine guards and racks for it put some good tires on it and the first three gears are great for light off road, more than most people will ever do. Put a set of trekker outback 33 liter side bags and the 46 liger top box and go touring. Not a lot of ground clearance but pick you path and take it easy and you will be amazed where this bike will take you. If you want to race through the dirt and mud, get a duel sport not a ATV bike. If you are going to do a lot of highway mines get a 14 tooth sprocket for the front, drive, other wise it will burn a lot of gas after 90 KPH. Even with the 14 tooth sprocket it is still very good for light off road riding.

its the jeep wrangler of bikes, you know where its gonna spend most of its life, but it wont mind a little off-roading (especially after a few choice mods)

@@cycletorquedotcom most of them live on pavement, and the more you alter them to lose their road manners they begin to do gnarlier off road stuff better and better. i always feel that tires hold the real power to unlock any terrain, just match the tire to the surface your hoping to tackle. super swampers on the highway or drag slicks in mud, just don't do as well as the other way around.

I love mine. It can go anywhere as long as you're not racing it. I fit it with Motoz Tractionator Adventure tyres, and its off-road capability went to the roof. Also installed the Givi engine guards and barkbusters handguards. Ive taken it through sand, gravel roads, single tracks.

You CAN remove the rubber on the pedals, you CAN exclude the ABS.

"It's not a dirt bike" .... Duh. They don't claim it to be. As for crash bars, skid plates, etc? You didn't really do your research, as that's all readily available in the aftermarket (just like it is for dirt bikes). Since the ABS is fuse-box controlled, you can also easily wire in a kill switch. There's even a place on the dash for a switch plate. In addition you can get more bottom end by adding a few more spokes to the rear sprocket. It's a much better bike than you give it credit for, especially for new riders who want to do a mix of street and dirt.

Jodian Gaming If you’re digging into a fuse box to turn off ABS, maybe you shouldn’t buy a bike with ABS. And I don’t think all the accessories in the world will turn it into a dirt bike - the changes you want to make, but a KLR650.

@@cycletorquedotcom ... You're an idiot if you go into the box to pull a fuse every time you want to kill ABS. They practically give you a switch location right on the dash. Like I said, splice a switch into the ABS system so you can kill the ABS any time you want more braking control off-road but still have the ABS safety on-road. It works beautifully. Add a 15 tooth sprocket on the front end and some 50/50 tires and I guarantee the bike will impress. Also the radiator guard, cowling guards, skid plate, and all of that are available in the aftermarket. I know, because I have them on my own Versys 300 and have ripped up some seriously loose gravel roads, as well as sand pits... Geez, do some research! Might want to check out some videos that others have done. Like how about; kzread.info/dash/bejne/op54rJOteNWZobw.html ...and that's not even an experienced rider on a modified bike!

@@cycletorquedotcom Buy a KLR 650? I've owned a KLR 650 and currently own a Versys 300. Properly outfitted the versys performs quite well off road and i'd take it any day over a KLR.

everything you mentioned is an easy fix, evem the low end grunt with a new sproket and every entry level bike has those problems- pegs, seat, winsheild, alloy wheels, storage options, crash bars, bash plates etc, etc, etc

There are plenty of trail bikes which are better suited to the bush and can be used for adventure riding - like the Yamaha WR250R, and then there's the KTM 390 Adventure, which is better off road out of the crate.

@@cycletorquedotcom Comparing apples to oranges... The Versys is a dual-cylinder adventure bike, made for both on and off road. Ride a Yamaha WR250R 50km on the highway and you won't be able to feel your hands by the time you get to the trails. KTM 390 has a tiny fuel tank, in comparison, and is way worse off-road than the Versys. Not to mention the KTM's single-cylinder is going to vibrate so bad your woman will leave you for the bike.

Touring bikes stopped being all-roads bikes when they grew massive fairings and wheels shrank from 19s to 18s to 16s and now 17s. Now you choose between something with Adventure styling which is happy on a dirt road or a touring bike which most people won't take down a gravel driveway.
