Speak for yourself. She may not have been top 40, but plenty of Gen X’ers loved her and then “The Red Shoes” cake out, it was in every music store. This video was on rotation on MTV. I can’t remember what they called it, but they had a few hours of “alternative/grunge” music and Kate Bush was always on, as was Bjork.

@@davidgollop2807 Not true. She made at least 3 trips to the U.S. and visited Canada to promote Hounds of Love. She appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1978 and was back in America and did record promotions for H.O.L at Tower Records in New York City on two occasions. She also flew back and met with record company officials in California in the late 80's. She did not do well commercially in the U.S. because she never toured and her record company failed to properly promote her and market her albums. Plans were in the works early in her career to tour the States, but the record company (EMI) pulled the plug because they thought it was too costly. And by that time, Kate preferred to be a studio artist and was not that interested in live performance after her European Tour of Life.

This is the first comment on this video in 3 years, so I know no one will see it. However, Kate Bush is a Goddess who should be worshipped! As a singer, writer, producer, dancer, etc., name someone in the last 30 years that was as innovative and creative as Kate. Beyonce? No disrespect to her, but Kate Bush did all it without AutoTune.

It was a mixed bag in the US. The Love and Anger video got pretty heavy rotation, and made me into what, at that time, was a late Kate adopter. But the local record shop had all her albums on CD, and I bought almost all of them in short order. Kate was the first artist I bought entirely on CD I think. In an era when viral blowouts are the expectation, it’s easy to look back and think her exposure in the US constituted obscurity. But remember the twin dynamic of the pre-internet era: massive exposure was harder, due to a handful of gatekeepers, but a number of small radio DJs still had some leeway in their programming choices. And albums were sold not streamed; I don’t think the royalties were princely, but they existed more than they do in a post-Napster world. Kate’s era was one where massive overnight fame was rarer, but musicians had a shot at living off moderate success.

I've always thought this song is about her wishing she was flexible like a rubberband so that when bad things happen, she has the ability to bounce back quickly and not break. "See those trees, bend in the wind, I feel they've got a lot more sense than me". Trees don't try and stop the wind from hitting them, they bend in the wind because the wind's only there temporarily and then it's gone. It's about being adaptable and still managing to survive

Know what you mean. There are KB songs that you understand, KB songs that you like, and some ... well, some, you don't have a f*****g clue what they're about, and yet they just blow you away, like this one. I think it's her choice of musicians and arrangements. Oh, and if you're like me there are those that simply lay waste to you; 'Coral Room' .... 'Under the Ivy' ... 'Hello Earth' ....
