Those who don’t understand Hama’s reaction at 3:47. Waterbenders typically redirect, dodge, or create shields as their tactic, Hama was shocked because Waterbenders don’t typically blast away water like what Katara did, any other water bender would’ve just redirected it somewhere else or side stepped, but Katara actually stood her ground much like an earth bender

My favorite part about this fight is that Katara has to use _everything_ Hama taught her. Even though she clearly doesn’t like these methods, she bends the water out of the flowers. And when she sees Hama reduce the trees to nothing, she’s eventually forced to do the same. Even when she bloodbends, she’s doing the same hand motions Hama did to bring her to her knees. In order to win, she had to learn to fight like Hama. And that’s why she lost

Also you can perfectly understand her motive, even if you disagree with it. It might be overthought, but people tend to turn to forbidden methods when nothing else, at least in their opinion, works. And we literally see someone who was tortured and saw the fire nation prison guards torture her people, she was forced to practice bloodbending, because it was her last resort. Sometimes this stuff can even happen irl. Bullies picking on a random quiet kid, and he seems to find no other solution than inflicting revenge in ANY way, whether it is godly or an ungodly way. And those who know will know what kind of "revenge on everyone" I'm talking about.

For a one-off "villain" Hama was well written. What she did was wrong, but what she had to endure and witness was even worse. What she was doing to those citizens was wrong, but I imagine just about anyone put into her shoes would come to the same conclusion that they should suffer as she did.

3:40 - Something I think that’s very important to note here. Water benders fight by redirecting the flow of water. Exactly as Katara and Hama have been doing up until this point. Hama was likely expecting Katara to somehow use the energy in her attack and redirect it. Instead Katara stands her ground and entirely blocks this attack. Katara didn’t water bend, she earth bended, or rather used an earth bending technique in her water bending. This is likely why Hama was so surprised, any ordinary water bender likely wouldn’t have been able to fully block that type of attack, but Katara did. Just like what Uncle Iroh was saying, you have to draw knowledge from all of life, Katara was learning a lot from Toph, and used an Earth bending technique to great effect here! :D

Iirc, waterbenders like Katara can hold grudges for a long time. If so, then the law she created isn’t about maintaining balance, for the waterbenders in the world are very few in number compared to firebenders, and bloodbending’s impact on the Great War was insignificant. It’s about holding a grudge against Hama for betraying her trust, a trust that should’ve been kept just bc they’re from the same tribe.

You can tell it’s a good storywriting and directing when the antagonist of the episode was not meant to be hated by the audience. We knew what hama did was bad, but it was understandable, she was in pain for numerous years, lost her family and friends in the war by a known enemy. An enemy that wiped out her entire identity and culture. Say, if I was in hama’s shoes, considering my personality and the society nowadays, I would act the same way as she did. A great series will not only entertain its audience to the core, but is also able to sprinkle/if not dump such moral values that the society can learn, how unnecessary wars take responsibility in shaping the later society and generations. If that’s not enough, the morals that can be learned from this series are still relevant even after 12 years. Thank you ATLA, I still learn such high values by watching my childhood favourite cartoon.

Something I never noticed until someone pointed out is at 3:41, before then it was a standard water bender vs water bender fight. But that stance, and directly confronting her opponents attack is more in line with Earth Bending than water bending. I love how the most powerful benders in Avatar, whether deliberately or unintentionally, incorporate the lesson Iroh shares with Zuko in Book 2 when teaching him about lightning redirection. Here you see Katara get the upper hand on Hama and, effectively, end the fight (before Sokka and Aang arrive) with a pair of Earthbending moves: 3:41 and 3:48. It could be argued that even her overcoming of Hama's Bloodbending came from a Toph-like resolute stubborness and refusal to submit.

3:40 is straight up my favorite moment of bending in the entire series. The best moments of bending are the ones that make use of the techniques and philosophy of the other elements to do things completely uncharacteristic of a bender's normal style. In this case, where a typical waterbender would redirect such a projectile, Katara instead squares her stance like an earthbender and stops it dead in its path, which is such a cool use of unorthodox bending and it really earns the shocked expression from Hama, because of course she wouldn't believe it, waterbenders aren't supposed to fight like that, it's probably the first time in her life she's ever seen somebody use that strategy

I do like to think this. I also think that theres evidence to suggest that Katara's pleadings weren't really directed at Hama, but at Yue. For example, I don't think Katara respects Hama enough to look at her in the eyes to beg for forgiveness, and when Katara does look up the moonlight explicitly washes over her face, despite the fact that Hama mostly blocks her view of the moon, so it's obvious she's not actually looking at Hama. The framing itself also shows that bloodbending is a corruption of water ending, Hama has her back to the moon and it's covered in darkness. So really I think in that moment Katara is calling to Yue and asking her to put a stop to this corrupt form of waterbending.

I don't know if it's just me, but it seemed like Katara used earthbending moves for her waterbending in 3:41 and 3:48. I suddenly remembered what Iroh said about learning from elements other than your own when practicing your bending. It kinda shows how, in a way, you can interconnect their styles.

When Katara broke down at the end, that was chilling. Hama still won even after being imprisoned again.

This just proves in times of desperation, mankind will find a way to defy the opposing forces one way or another, like Toph trapped in the metal cage. It's actually really interesting, and just proves how great Avatars lore and characters really are.

Well real life humankind does not bend, no magical force of will would save it. And this is why this whole planet is doomed.

Those who defy the opposing force will either lose or win which determines if they were the villain or the hero 😏 the winners write the history.

“They threw me in prison to rot! Along with my brothers and sisters!” Interesting statement Hama, given that it appears that when you escaped you just walked out and left your brothers and sisters to rot 🤷‍♀️
