I really think that Katara was affected a bit more than Soka due to the fact that katara and her dad ran to save her mom BUT it’s implied that they just went inside their house to find her body in ashes/dead. Katara actually saw the body presumably burned. In my opinion

I love that they showed there are multiple ways you can deal with painful things. And that some want / need to forgive and some don’t to move on. It’s different for everyone

This is a very powerful episode, one of my favourites for Katara. It's a great message about dealing with grief and revenge. Part of me did actually want Katara to go through with it too. And I wonder if this wasnt a kids show on nickelodeon if they had actually gone through with it. But in the end revenge changes nothing about the events that already happened and just leaves you empty. Though as she points out, not going through with revenge is not the same as forgiveness. Her confronting him is one of the most chilling moments in the series. Also the Suki Sokka moment is absolutely hilarious.

You catch that pun near the beginning of the episode? The morning after Sokka tells Zuko what happened to their mother, whe Katara and he are going to take Appa, you see Sokka making a flower necklace. That was a visual pun added by the animation team. It's meant to confirm that Sokka got some the night before. He got "lei-d"

Hope you read this comment! Crazy theory: remember in the Hama episode when she told her story it showed Hama with a person that looked like katara with hair loops also. Well that would be kataras Grand gran/gradma. The time fits perfectly since they are the about the same age. Well when Hama escaped the fire nation prison with her blood bending the news must’ve spread throughout the fire nation army that the southern water tribe can make some really powerful benders that can bend blood. So when they heard there is still 1 bender left they went for the bender BUT now chose to not take prisoners!!! Because they couldn’t take the chance of having another blood bender being made out of necessity!! Hamas blood bending technique is the reason why Kataras mom was killed instead of taken prisoner!

in my humble opinioon yan ra is serving his punishment he may not be in jail where I would kind of like to him but hes living miserable as his mothers servant if thats not fitting punishment or karma as we like to call it i don't know what is

It’s actually never confirmed whether or not it’s a night of a full moon during Kataras southern raiders arc, which has led a lot of fans to theorize that she is just kind of…Strong enough to do it. (Not sure if confirmed in the comics though)

The confirmation for me was in LoK. If Katara had used bloodbending without a full moon here, the people in book 1 of LoK wouldn't have thought it was impossible without a full moon. It wouldn't have surprised everyone when Tarlock used it on Korra without a full moon, and Yakone wouldn't have a defense lawyer who's entire case was built on the fact that it was common knowledge that bloodbending was impossible without a full moon.

Also. I'm not going to necessarily defend what Katara said to Sokka about their mother. It was out of line and completely unfair and untrue. At the very least, we should have gotten an apology from her before the episode ended. At the same time, it kinda goes back to how Zuko used to treat Iroh through books 1 and 2. They say mean, and sometimes downright cruel things. But Sokka, just like Iroh whenever Zuko acted that way towards him, likely understood that Katara didn't necessarily mean what she said, and that it was said out of hurt and pent up anger. She was lashing out, because of the pain she was feeling in the moment. You'll notice that Iroh never once rose to any of the mean or cruel things Zuko said to him when he was lashing out. It's because he knew that Zuko didn't mean what he was saying, and that it was just Zuko reacting to his pain and hurt.

I'm low-key relieved that I finally found someone else totally bothered by what Katara said to Sokka back there... I honestly get where she's coming from and how strongly she feels abt the issue, but that was really unkind and unnecessary. ...then we see in this same ep. how Kaya's face is pretty much the female version of Sokka's and it's just 💔 (esp. when you think abt him telling Toph how he barely remembers what their mom looks like.. *sigh*)

Yea she was way outta line but it‘s forgivable if she apologized which I’m sure she did. She was emotional but yea that was a crazy thing to say. Nice observation with the similarities between sokka and his mom I didn’t see it right away but now that you say it
