    When Katara said Aang wouldn't understand she meant losing a parent, Aang didn't know his parents, especially his mother as the temples didn't mix male and female. And she also meant that he does not understand taking revenge as he was brought and taught by the monks to not engage in and to avoid conflict at all costs. And through out the series it was proven over and over that Katara was more drawn to her mother especially knowing that she was the reason for her mother's death in a way. Sokka was more drawn to his father as it was proven over and over. Tho I must admit it was insensitive but then again we are talking about a 14 year old. Just wanted to lay it out, hope you understand now. : )

    @@amahlgrant Except he would likely understand very well. Monk Gyatso was essentially Aang's father, and had a very similar parental relationship. Also, we know from The Storm that Aang feels responsible for Gyatso's death. So the situations are quite similar. Aang even went into the same level of rage initially when he found out about Gyatso, but Katara was there to calm him down, and prevent him from losing control. The parallel's are really amazing how they tie into each other, as Aang's words probably helped Katara to not lose control when she was about to go for the kill.

Lol It was a light hearted observation, and I think she always has blamed herself a little for her mother’s death. “If only I ran faster” “what if I stayed with her” “I was too late” , and I think after this episode she does let it go, even if she didn’t forgive the man who murderer her mother, she finally had the resolution she always wanted, which is quite powerful.

    One overlooked detail. A lot of people overlook this one. When she said to Sokka that he didn’t love her the way she did. She was referring to when Sokka said he couldn’t remember his mother’s face because Katara filled the role. She called him out in a fit of anger. And judging by his tone, it wasn’t him being offended. It was more him silent agreeing. Because another large difference between Sokka and Katara’s story aside survivors guilt. They left Kya’s body. So when she ran into the tent...yeah. Did they talk it out later? Most likely judging by how they went right back to normal. Not something one can just ignore and move on

    That's something I feel a lot of reactors don't get. Like, she was a child and found her brutally murdered mother. Yes, Sokka lost his mom, but he doesn't have the same memory (and he even admitted that he barely remembers her thanks to Katara taking her place). And yes, Aang lost his people, but he never came face to face with the people responsible (and they must have all been dead anyway) and we shouldn't forget how *he* treated everyone, especially Katara, when Appa got stolen. Idk, it just feels a bit hypocritical to me how people shit on Katara for how she acted in this episode, it's very understandable imo.

    I see a lot of people really disliking the way Katara treated Aang and Sokka in this episode. Let me just say that there are *a lot* of irrational things you'll say or do when you're full of built-up rage. Yes, it was irrational for Katara to say that Sokka didn't love their mother. This is from her built-up anger and grief. Sokka might have been more attached to their father, wanting to be a warrior and a leader growing up. He might not have as close a relationship with their mother, which might explain why he couldn't even remember his mother's face. Katara was left to fill in the role of their mother while Sokka, being older and being a boy, might have handled the grief better. Next, Aang lost his people, his culture, his whole identity, which is a tremendous loss. However, he was not there to help them. He did not even know that shit's going to happen after he left. Moreover, the people who conducted the genocide are most probably dead. Aang couldn't focus his anger on anyone because he's a natural optimist, taught that everyone has good in them. Aang naturally looks on the bright side of things and the monks taught him to forgive. When Aang found out about the genocide, he had emotional support from Katara, which plays a big part of handling the grief. Now, think of it in Katara's POV, she was the reason her mother sacrificed herself. She was there just moments before her mother was killed. She saw the killer right in front of her and she couldn't do anything at all. She was just a small, weak kid. It's *very* easy for a kid to blame themselves for anything that goes wrong and we're talking about the death of a close family member. Having a war going on, her father was probably out training all the time and Sokka could've easily followed to train. Katara has her responsibilities to do and barely has an outlet for her grief.

    I agree with some of what you said but I don't agree with what you said about aang. Aangs race was killed in pursuit of killing the avatar. And then he wasn't even there to help when the fire nation attacked because he was stuck in the iceberg. Who knows what could have happened if aang was there when the fire nation attacked. He could have entered the avatar state etc. It almost feels like you completely forgot about aangs entire character arc of learning to let go of guilt.

  • @MadeByIsmael

    @MadeByIsmael

    What I'm trying to say is that aang is potentially more responsible for the death of his people than Katarras is for the death of her mother. Katarra was a helpless little child who could barely bend while aang was not only a fully fledged airbending master, but he had the power of the avatar state within him. I'm not hating on katarra, she is absolutely a queen, but there's no point in defending her actions in this episode. She was PURPOSEFULLY supposed to come off as a dick during this episode and that's okay

    @@MadeByIsmael Yeah, part of Aang's arc is his guilt for leaving, but there's no telling what he could've done or what could've happened. Maybe the Avatar State could've stopped a few sieges or maybe the monks could've just escorted him away again and again, pushing him to master the elements. The war would've been a lot more intense at that time too Also, my post is just a debate from a different point of view. The episode really does demonstrate the irrationality of rage :)

    Very interesting. You are the first reactors I’ve seen to partly defend what Katara said to Sokka. And I agree. Yes, what Katara said to Sokka was awful and should have never been said... but I see where she’s coming from. Especially after learning more about Sokka and Katara’s relationship. Sokka confessed to Toph that he can no longer picture his mother’s face. All his life, Katara was the one looking out for him. SHE was the replacement for Sokka’s mother. So while Sokka is sad and angry that his mother was killed, he had someone in his life to replace that loss. But what about Katara? Who is HER new mother figure? Who is there to cook and clean and provide support and empathy to HER? ... There’s no one. By Katara taking up the motherly role at such a young age, she has completely lost her mother. She has BECOME the mother when she was not ready to. While Sokka has forgotten his mother’s face, Katara still remembers it. And so when Katara tells Sokka that he didn’t love her like she did, she’s saying it out of anger, and a misunderstanding on why Sokka doesn’t want revenge for their mother too.

  • @blitzer9981

    @blitzer9981

    That makes a lot of sense, and could also explain why she was so mad at her father when Sokka was (relatively) fine. Their dad was their last parental figure, not a replacement for their mother but someone to make them feel safe and loved and help them in the ways a parent does, when he left, Sokka still had Katara to mother him, but Katara was stripped of the last paternal figure she had (Not counting Gran Gran because she seemed to be more of a teacher and mentor than a paternal figure). Sokka was effected of course, but he at least had Katara to fall back on.

I will admit I said a lot of messed up things too. 2. She saw her mother burned alive when she was 8 YEARS OLD. No normal person will ever recover from that without therapy plus let’s add on that there is a literal war happening and her father leaves just a few years later to fight in that war. That is a lot for anyone to go through and she had to act like mother in her tribe all in a young age. 3. Sokka is not going to get offended because he knows his sister is in a lot of pain and trauma. He knows that she’s hurt and hasn’t expressed that in YEARS bottling up your emotions like that for YEARS is going to make anyone snap. Sokka tries to protect his sister from anymore trauma because he knows Katara has been through enough already. Sokka didn’t see their mother burned alive, Katara did. 4. Aang isn’t going to compare his trauma to Katara because that’s basically saying “Your trauma doesn’t matter because mine is worse” Aang would NEVER do that to Katara because he knows she hurting and he knows she hasn’t been able to express that. Comparing someone’s trauma is messed up because why the hell would you do that!? People have been through their own trauma and you shouldn’t invalidate that by comparing it to someone else’s trauma. It’s messed in my book if you don’t agree you worry me. 5. Katara has literally made fun of Toph for being blind because she was pissed off with her. Katara really isn’t scared to go that low. She has done it before. 6. As friends you know when your friend is hurting and everyone knew Katara is in a lot of pain because she has a lot of anger and blames herself for her mother’s death. Her friends understand her frustration, anger, and pain. I’ve made my case and if you want to debate about let’s debate about it.

    People who slam Katara for what she said to Sokka forget how Aang unfairly snapped at Toph, several times. He accused her of letting Appa get taken on purpose, and yelled at her saying they were pretty much better off without her (when Appa was tired and shedding a lot). He and Katara both said things in the heat of the moment that weren't exactly called for, but Katara gets hate. It's just weird to me people are extremely critical of her, specifically, but not the rest of the gaang. I'm not saying it's right to say hurtful things, but it's understandable and a very common thing people do when they're upset and not thinking rationally. You're absolutely right: they're kids. And nobody is perfect, we all have moments where we say or do things we regret.

    I think their mother's death is also more traumatic for Katara because she found her body along with her father. We know their mother died but we don't know how. The implications are horrifying if you think of the ways a firebender could have killed her. For a child that must have been terrible.

    This is the best “Forgivenesses” kids episode out there. Aang is right. We should strive to forgive. Holding onto anger isn’t the right answer. But Katara can’t forgive the guy. Mai ranked Zuko above Azula, so Azula wanted to put herself above him in an area that she always has: combat. Because she acts more emotionally than logically, her attack becomes a fiasco. Zuko is up to par with her with his new firebending and he is moving towards her on the airship. Team Avatar escaped and Zuko got help from Katara while she survived by the skin of her teeth. It’s like how the fight at 2x13 went. Aang had help from Momo and Azula had to get on top of the drill by herself. Azula is good by herself but she is great when there’s people with her, helping her out. She took a huge blow in losing people to help her out.

    I think the best way to talk about Katara in this episode is by saying that this episode was her "avatar state". What I mean is that in this episode Katara is consumed by anger, and sadness, and has no recognition of the safety and well-being of others around her, in the same way that when aang lost appa or found out about his people, he went into the avatar state, and almost hurt everyone around him while consumed by rage and sadness. They both needed to let out their grief, aang had the avatar state to really start that, Katara does no, which is where this episode comes in.

    10:52 I don’t think Katara meant that Aang wouldn’t understand her pain, even if Aang thought so too. She knows perfectly well what he’s gone through. I think she meant that he wouldn’t understand her overwhelming desire for revenge, since he’s shown himself to be incredibly forgiving and reluctant to use violence. ... At least, I HOPE that’s what she meant 😅 I also think her words to Sokka happened because she was feeling angry and hurt from Aang comparing her to Jet (which I think was very unfair) and Sokka seeming to agree with him. I hope she apologized for that offscreen later though One thing I really love about this episode is that it teaches us that it’s okay not to forgive people who’ve done terrible things to you, as long as you don’t let your anger at them hold you back and poison your life

    This is probably one of my favorite episodes in the series overall. It's such a great episode for Katara, and I love that they let her finally deal with the feelings she had about what happened to her mother, and that they didn't shy away from making it dark. It's also a great example of the cycle of revenge too. The only thing I've never really understood or agreed with is the idea/theory that they were looking for Hama or that Kya was killed _because_ of Hama. The timeline just doesn't add up. Kya was killed when Katara was 8, about 6 years before the start of the series. Hama was shown to have escaped when she was still young, middle aged at least, which Gran Gran definitely is not. I feel like if they were looking for her they would have come looking long before that.

    not a fair comparison: in Superman's case, Krypton was destroyed by a natural disaster. There was no culprit. In Aang's case, they were attacked, there was a reason behind the attack and he knows that: 1) they were searching for him. 2) There is a culprit ( aka Sozin) 3) it was a violent crime.

    The best part about the Zuko field trips is that because the Fire Nation was who they had to fight, the whole gang was imbalanced in that they lacked fire. For each of the field trips, each of the characters got an experience that brought out the fire in them. Zuko became like an unintentional therapist for the issues they never resolved. For Sokka, he felt inadequate trying to defend the southern water tribe. He needed to restore his confidence in himself. For Katara, it was that she felt helpless and guilt-ridden over the loss of her mom. She wasn't the helpless little girl. She totally overpowered Yan Ra, and in doing so realized how small he really was. For Aang, it was a fear of power. He feared power for its destructive capability, but learned that it also comes with the power to create. The main exception is Toph. In her case, it was Zuko who needed Toph therapy, which he got during the Ember Island Players when Toph reassured him that Iroh would still be there.

    The line Katara says to Sokka about their mother is the worst she has ever said in the entire show, but I find Zuko's sarcasm to Aang about "the air temple preschool" just as obnoxious knowing that there is no more air temple preschool because Zuko's grandfather massacred all the children there and that the day before, his sister destroyed a good part of one of the remaining air temples.

    The theory is that they actually weren't looking for Katara, they were looking for Hama after she escaped the fire nation prison, and they killed the remaining southern waterbenders after finding out they could possibly bloodbend, they assumed she would go back home. Hama is basically responsible for Katara's mothers death.

    In grief bottled up and expressing, she may have temporarily forget and is truly feeling and running on her emotions. Thinking back in real life especially for a 14 year old, we wont truly remember everything at any specific point in time and coupled that with extreme rage emotion, it is logical to be blinded by it and thus saying based on grief and hurt. #FlawedCharacters It really resembles us in real life as humans which is what I like. It makes me think in real life what I'm did or say that may affect anyone thus apologising for it later on. So this is still justified for Katara being a 14 year old human.

    No, that’s completely wrong. Katara lashed out at Sokka because his reaction was so different from hers and she couldn’t understand why in that moment. She didn’t consider the possibility that she might’ve had a much more traumatic experience that day than Sokka did, which of course would lead to him being less angry with the killer. Also, Sokka not remembering his mother’s face was never shown to be an insecurity. I mean, he immediately followed it up with “It really seems like my whole life, Katara’s been the one looking out for me.” So Sokka had Katara as his maternal figure after their mother died, but Katara never had that, and as a result she never truly healed from that incident. Which of course led to her actions in this episode.

    This Episode is great! The Zutara tension in this is undeniable, Zuko and Katara are the two most emotional people in the whole series which is why i personally believe that aang is a better fit for katara because he balances her out. Nonetheless, I love the zutara dynamic and this episode. I really feel like Katara got the closure she needed and deserved and Zuko supported her with whatever she needed to do because he can relate to her due to him losing his mother too. The way they showed Katara's "dark side" more in this episode and katara bloodbending again, obviously not thinking clearly but just out of pure sadness and anger, this episode is top tier.
