The whole tractor thing is based on the accent of steve, Often referred to as a "farmers accent" So because steve sounds like a farmer, Karl used the joke about "there must be a tractor sale going on" talking about farm machinery

And the pirate thing was because quite a lot of pirates were from Bristol in the West Country and it’s been popularised as a pirate accent

@@ponymalone3636 Not exactly. It is because an early film role for a pirate went to an actor from that area. It inspired other actors to use the same accent for pirates and it became synonymous.

@@zarabada6125 Yes, it was Robert Newton. He's actually from Dorset, but of course has that West Country accent. I believe it was his portrayal of Long John Silver in Treasure Island (1950), and his decision to use a thick West Country accent, that provided a template for the classic pirate character ever since.

The Tractor sale jibe is because his accent is usually associated with the part of England where all the farmers live, also its the stereotypical pirate accent.

Steve speaks with a Bristol accent. Bristol contains some traces of the west-country farmers’ accent.

I come from Bristol (the same City as Stephen Merchant) and I can say that there are thousands of people here who sound far more like Farmers than Steve does.

Stephen is from the south west of England, Bristol, and that’s the same area as me and people with my accent are considered farmers or pirates because of our accent. If you search up a Bristish farmers accent you’ll often find stephens accent or even stronger.

It really gets under Steve's skin, that Karl is largely not bothered about opinions of him. Steve projects his insecurities and gets the hit in first to detract from the fact he looks like an inbred troglodyte and he knows others think that he is. Karl will always win in these situations because Steve is supposed to be the more intelligent and Karl is just not bothered.

I’m not feeling this revisionist version of the show, that is often pushed by people that dislike Steve. Anybody that’s listened knows damn well that Karl often Made fun of Steve’s looks unprovoked, and also came up with the some of the nastiest insults/comments said on the show, a lot of which were said with malice and not jest. I can’t stand it when people pretend that Karl is somehow the ‘triumphant victim’, when insults were flying left and right from everyone, with some of the harshest actually coming from him.
