Kai Lenny on The Portal (with host Eric Weinstein), Ep.

Ойын-сауық

In a world which is often slow-moving and even stagnant, there are always sectors and individuals who buck the trends. In this episode of The Portal, Eric sits down with his favorite surfing hero Kai Lenny who is pioneering a new approach to big wave surfing. By availing himself of the latest technology and dedicating his life to innovation and discipline, all-around waterman Kai Lenny is redefining what is possible with boards and waves. Whether it is kite surfing, hydrofoils, paddle boards or towing into monster waves, Kai is not only riding, but playing in the biggest surfable waves as if they were up to an order of magnitude smaller. Eric attempts to understand Kai's approach to innovation and how he can be so carefree and seemingly casual when he is always flirting with death within some of the most powerful structures and forces nature can throw at a single individual from Jaws in Maui to Nazaré in Portugal.

It's amazing how on point this guy was with the whole message of the podcast while possibly not even realizing it. He talked about physics, markets, mentorship, innovation, space exploration, and handling stress while on a "big wave", all in the context of his own niche. And on top of all of that, he is obviously extremely smart in a way that others might not be able to see. Best guest so far, imo

Absolutely man. I don't know that I'll ever learn to surf, but Kai is obviously very smart, talented, and driven, all while having a very relaxed and positive demeanor. The discussion about being able to control but also use one's ego in times of pressure I thought was really good. But the whole episode was great, and would love to see him come back on.

This was such an amazing conversation. As someone who grew up surfing in california and chased a job to chicago, surfing has become that thing I'm starting to miss most. Just the act of sitting on your board looking out into the horizon for that next wave; never been closer to nature. No one understands the mentality and the complexity within the sport. Thank you Eric for seeing what so many dont.

Kai is legitimately having mystical experiences when surfing. It makes him feel alive, the sense of oneness with the universe. He even mentions the 'observer' effect, where ones consciousness feels like it is watching a beautiful movie. Intense time dilation. All of these things are common in mystical experiences.

Did Diehard read Diehard books? ...Hell Nope Bouyyy! 1;P There will never be concise descriptions of this 23:00 experience 'on paper'! I believe the 'observer effect' and 'time dilation' are max 100fps views of a 1000fps + issue/experience, there is no retrospective / reverse engineering verbal equation of an experience not captured at it's full cognitive resolution & speed.

It's not mystical as in connecting on or with another realm or reality. The repetitive experience and expertise requires extreme focus and forces you to shut out the non important, and then you have space in your head for other things or realizations. I think that is part of zen and part of meditation. Part of survival.

Kai is such smart, articulated guy, as always, Eric as big surfer him self, can move to any layer of conversation, any topic and reveal to us amazing things. We have this genius mathematician and this prodigy of big wave surf, in normal circumstances it wouldn't have much to talk about (you would think at first glance), but thanks to these two amazing guys... they made it unique, accessible and gave us lessons after lessons... and the conversation ended like it has just started... proving all the odds completely wrong and making me want to hear more.., I could listen to these two all day. Grew up idolizing Laird. Moved to Kauai at 19 in huge part because of him. I see the Laird spirit living through Kai. I always shortboarded only the last year or 2 got into sup. South shore KAuai has a sup scene but I always put them off as either too old to surf anymore or can't surf. Now as a ocer supper and paddler in general I think actually ripping on a sup is so much harder than ripping on a shortboard. I love the ocean and thank Kai for helping me see the spiritual nature of a waterman life, beyond just surfing

There seems that the hydrofoil boards have a specific optimization problem balancing lift and buoyancy of the hydrofoil. How much energy is going into lift -vs- adding potential energy to the rider in the form of momentum. Should to foils be more buoyant? Or have they already run the math and found a sweet spot. Any one know? Also, Eric mentions bird flight mechanics, and so I thought that a cleverly designed flexure could help them extract more energy from the wave vorticies. If I were my surfer youth and lived next to the ocean, it sure would be fun to get into the workshop and try out a few design changes.

Perhaps surfing waves will lead to breakthrough ideas on preventing tsunamis from reaching land. Imagine a machine that could literally cut through the waves. Imagine that thing is a water turbine. I like this dude. You're making me think, sir.

Maybe compare to maps of areas ships avoid for the monstrous destructive waves, as well as those that have a mythical significance in local culture.

When are you going to have Howard Bloom on? That would be an amazing meeting.

Eric, luv ya man, but would you kindly give us a short update on your take on COVID-19, how your State is handling it well/not handling it well. What's the skuttlebutt from other regions? Thank you kindly. Also, please address the Lieber arrest and what that means, if anything. Best regards.

Eric, I feel like you are driving towards something that the collective unconscious is giving birth to. My prediction is you do something about Bouldering soonish. Yet another sport which has changed in the last year and continues to change. Duel texture climbing holds have changed the game, in a game which was really well defined. Forget Alex Honnold, people in climbing don't really rate him as a climber. Maybe a novelty. Look at Ondra or Megos. Something amazing is happening in Japan right now. From names you won't hear about on the internet.
