Justin Scarred and a backscratcher garnish?? [Tropical Itch from 1957]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I met Justin Scarred years ago because of a video that he posted about Oceanic Arts. With the recent news of the closing of Oceanic Arts, Justin came by to talk about their immense legacy and a brand new book about the prolific business. We also made a questionable cocktail.
And while we joked around about Harry Yee, please don't take that as malice. This channel absolutely respects the contributions that Harry made to the tiki and cocktail world at large. We'd give anything to be able to interview the gentleman. Aloha.
To make the the drink in the video:
--------------------------------------
8 oz passion fruit nectar
1/2 oz 151 Puerto Rican rum
1 oz bourbon
1/2 oz orange curacao
2 dashes Angostura bitters
--------------------------------------
Shake vigorously with crushed ice. Traditionally the glass that it was served in was a hurricane glass. Pour all of the contents into the glass.

Spike, I love your shows as always. I'm not "Judging" either :), but I was cringing so hard watching the vid. I'm surprised no one else caught this, but I'm super technical. You had the equivalent of two drinks' worth of passion fruit puree in one of your cups, 8 oz. That's what you normally do right, mix two in one cup. Then, when you said, hey hold on, let me get a new cup, I thought, "Oh cool" he's going to split the passion fruit. But when you didn't, I wanted to yell at the screen, "that's too much passion fruit"!! It's only supposed to be 4 oz. Sorry for the rant. :)

Suggestion for easy passion fruit puree is Goya, you'll find in the frozen section or Latin food section. Great for making passion fruit syrup. Should be easy to find in Cali.

I also chime in to support Goya. Great stuff, very reasonably priced and you can turn it into syrup or juice as you need.

SPIKE! The best passion fruit puree can be found in latin-centric grocery stores in the freezer section. Goya makes one called "Goya Fruta" that's just 100% frozen passion fruit. My wife is from Peru where fresh passion fruit juice is super common, and It's the closest thing you can get. Fun tip! - Once defrosted, just mix it 50/50 by volume with sugar for perfect passion fruit syrup that'll keep in the fridge for months.

After I watched your video, I counted the number of back scratchers I have in our house....6. I'm pretty sure I earned most of those wooden trophies from a now closed restaurant named The Outrigger on the beach in Kihei, Maui , although I do have one from Harvey's in Lake Tahoe. Some good memories..or lack thereof.

Awesome video! Tropical Itch has never been my favorite, but have used a slightly different recipe that I think is a little more balanced if you have to use puree instead of juice. Ingredients: 1 oz. bourbon 1 oz. light rum (ideally 151 proof rum) 0.5 oz. orange curacao (or triple sec) 0.5 oz. lemon juice 3 oz. passion fruit puree 2 oz. water 1 oz. dark rum 1-2 dashes Angostura
