Another Mai Tai? [Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Surf Room]
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Yes, another 'Mai Tai...' At least this one comes from the guy who invented THEE Mai Tai. The whole concept was to have Victor Bergeron craft something delicious and palatable to tourists so the Royal Hawaiian could 'sell' the islands. They really could have named this thing anything else, but the Mai Tai name had such inherent value that they couldn't resist.
Thrifting genius, Jason T Smith, joins us to explore this mai tai and talk about the wild world of vintage collecting and selling on-line.
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
1oz fresh squeezed orange juice
1oz unsweetened pineapple juice
1/2oz fresh lime juice
1/4oz fresh lemon juice
1/4oz orgeat syrup
1/4oz sugar syrup
1/4oz orange curacao
1oz Demerara rum
1oz dark Jamaican rum
1oz light Puerto Rican rum
--------------------------------------
Shake with ice and pour into a double old fashioned glass.
Garnish with pineapple spear, rock candy stick, orchid, and mint sprig.

you guys are so funny. loved jason's head inside the barrel lamp at the end. and that TVs blue glass with gold!! make some more why don't we
Thanks for talking about the Restaurant/Tiki Bar in Columbus, Ohio. I loved that place!
Man, I just got into cocktails this year and I really didn't get the whole tiki thing until I saw this channel. You are awesome dude. Great editing, great lighting, amazing "set," and just a fun experience. I have since gotten completely obsessed with tiki and have slowly been working my bar towards some of the special ingredients needed for this stuff. Thanks for what you do. I can't understand how this channel doesn't even have 10k yet. Please keep it up.
I'll admit, I'll binged watch breezeway cocktail hour at work. 10 hours of sitting at a table polishing machined parts. Sometimes I'm not really watching, I just my earphones in listening to the history of tiki and stories of your cool friends.
Well that was fun. I have to credit Jason T. Smith with my obsession with tiki. I saw his Tv episode about thrifting a tiki mug and it was on, everything from then on has been about buying tiki and Hawaiian. I live up in icy Canada so some of my collection is what i can find locally which as it turns out is alot. I have built an outdoor bar and converted my basement into a mid-century tiki lounge. I just found you spike and will be binge watching more as the weeks pass. Thanks to you both for inspiring my tiki journey. The tiki cowboy.

I live in Cleveland. We should all meet up in my garage -- AKA -- Tommy's Hideaway. A little tiki oasis for the rough winters : )
Lololol, the first video I watched of yours was the picking up of the tiki bar and fridge, I remember thinking, you can make this happen...been an antique dealer for years, you WILL make it fit...great show...identifying on so many levels...CHEERS...did I mention great show...!
Jason made me laugh many times thankz for a fun show Spike.
Don't freak out, I've been binge listening to your show while at work. I love the history and your guests have been great.
Great, informative episode, especially because I learned I'd been making the Surf Bar Mai Tai incorrectly. I don't know if it was a misprint or what, but my copy of Beachbum Berry's Remixed omits the Curaçao from the recipe. I made 2 back-to-back, one with Curaçao and one without, and can confirm that the Curaçao makes the drink just different enough to be better.
Undertow is legit. Nice seeing the love for it.
I sometimes binge watch Spike's show but then I've got a drinking problem and a lot of time to kill...
Richard “Jaws” Kiel is scared of Jason’s teeth!🤣 Jeez, that rock candy was getting munched like a 2 year old eating Goldfish!! 😲 🪨 🦷
Jason = Hamilton heith, Seth Rogan voice. Love this video.
Love the banter, I OD on all the stories.
Keep it up ! always a blast on a rainy Sunday here in Germany.. you always manage to make me wanna enjoy Tiki !!
Following up on the cork discussion, two things: First, it may be heresy, but a good screw top is probably the best closure for a bottle of spirits or wine. Second, if you have a corked spirit bottle in a dry place, you can turn the bottle upside down for a couple of seconds every once in a while to moisten the cork (but if you leave a spirits bottle on its side like a wine bottle, the high concentration of alcohol will destroy the cork).

when you have 400 bottles to turn upside down for a couple of seconds every once in a while, you do that once and never again. lol
Who knew Tiki Gods could be humble ? Absolutely amazing guest which made for a great show 😀👏👍

Guilty of binge watching 👍
Great show, very interesting guest!
I am a new subscriber and found you as I was searching for Mai Tai recipes. I just got back from a two-week vacation on Kauai that was full of Mai Tais. It seemed like every restaurant had a different one, and I liked them all; what can I say. We were at Poipu beach, and there were four establishments within easy walking distance from our Kihuana Plantation accommodations. I conjured up an idea of doing a Mai Tai crawl of the four places. I soon realized I could only have two Mai Tais as they are pretty strong. So much for the four-place idea. I used a recipe from a restaurant in Thousand Oaks, Ca. back in 86 that used 1 shot each of Bicardi Light, dark, and Myers rum. Then the orange and pineapple juice you used, and I think a shot of sweet and sour ( I think your lemon, lime, and simple syrup would be better), a splash of blackberry brandy, and a splash of grenadine for color, and finally they floated some 151 on top. That baby was strong also. The one thing I came back with me from Kauai that I would use instead of the 151 would be to float some very dark Maihana rum on top. What do you guys think of the three rums at the beginning, or maybe just one or two rums? Please tell me about the crushed ice bucket you have also. Thanks
Such a great episode!
What a great show and super informative! Keep up the great work!
Wow! I've been playing guitar since 1978...I had never heard of Billy Mure. Just checked him out and saved a bunch of stuff on Spotify. Cool tunes. Cheers.

I absolutely love your show and the guest that you have on you have inspired me so much keep up the good work cheers from Wisconsin
Another great video with another great guest.
Loved the show! Yay Jason! I just ordered rock Candy to make this drink!
I picked up a pristine rattan dining room set for $100 at a Goodwill last week. I was (and still am) giddy.
Literally made this drink just a couple of hours before this episode aired. May be my new favorite Mai Tai. 10 ingredients though...yeesh!
Recently found you and enjoying the channel. I think it would be cool if you did a video showing how you have the back of your bar setup and organized. Showcase the tools and supplies. Also it would be cool if you had a a multi-tiered liqour list including a small, medium, and large bar, so that those of us getting started know how we should focus our money to make the greatest number of cocktails. Thanks for sharing and continue your greatness. ;)
Another great guest, awesome episode!!

lol, corks just don't like the desert
2:17 this was me going to the The Alibi in Portland for karaoke in my 20's no idea that it was one of the last OG tiki bars left that has not changed since 1947, its drinks aren't very good compared to Hale Pele (Martin Cate is the owner of it) but its OG from tiki's hay day and hasn't changed. I really wish a real Tiki enthusiast would buy the place and make the menu better.
Squeezing like that is a tried and true technique. It’s how you milk cows!
Another awesome episode!!!! For real corks you need to turn the bottle upside down so that that the cork soaks in the spirit. You have to repeat this to prevent the cork from drying out.

Looking forward to seeing video of your Viva Las Vegas trip and Frankies Bar! Probably one of the first places I want to see when I get off the plane in Vegas.
Great content! Spike is the coolest! We met at viva. Keep up the good work.

I miss the Royal Hawaiian in Laguna Beach, they had the best Mai Tai's 😥
Very fun video! And I need to check out Justin T Smith as well. I decided to downsize my stuff at home by tossing it on the bay. Of course sales tanked. Gotta sell what people want to buy at prices they will pay, not just toss a bunch of stuff out there. BUT! I gotta check out Justin for some hawaiian style shirts and a mug. Need to start styling! If I can't sell stuff, I might as well buy stuff.
Great show! Got a couple of questions. Why did you flash “Scottsdale” on the screen when talking about Undertow? Second, for those who prefer Frankie’s over the Golden Tiki, what are the reasons? I always hit up both when I’m in Vegas. I find the drink quality to be better at Golden Tiki, but Frankie’s hits the spot when I want to relax.
