My grandfather and grandmother came in the 50's from Ireland to Cape Town to start a new life and without both their sacrifices I wouldn't be in this beautiful country today, my dream is to visit northeast county Cavan, Ireland where they came from and see where my heritage comes from. Im so proud to have both Celtic and Coloured genes 🇨🇮❤🇿🇦

Thanks for your account. Fantastic that your family story is so well preserved. I did visit Cavan many years ago. I vaguely recall an ancient churchyard where people used to leave pins on a certain gravestone to cure themselves of warts! (But my memory may be mixing it up with another place.)

Thanks for your comment. So glad I could fill in a gap in the story for you. That's exactly what Just Off the Highway is meant to do.
Once again an awesome story. Those battlefields can be emotional visits. I thought that I had been to most sites, but this is one that I will have to add to a road trip. As always, thanks for an informative and entertaining episode.

Thanks David! When I walked on the ground that had to be crossed under fire, the history really came alive. I highly recommend a visit. And, of course, a hat tip and a glass of something Irish to mark St. Patrick's day too. 😉

I have Irish blood, plus had the Irish red hair but with green eyes. My paternal grandmother had titian red hair and green eyes her paternal grandmother was a Mac Cauley. Also have Scottish heritage as well, Montgomery I really enjoy your videos, though I have not seen a video for quite a while, until today. Also looking forward to your next video. 😊
So heartbreaking that such important places are so neglected.

Seems like resources are scarce at some of the sites that are on private property, but I think there should be assistance from the state to maintain cultural treasures.

I have Irish ancestry on both maternal lines of my parents eventhough I speak Afrikaans as my father's mother did. My great grandmother on my mother's side spoke English though because her parents came directly from Ireland.

Hi Al. I’ve passed this on to my friend Seamus McGuigan. I suspect that it might resonate with him. BTW. I once saw you on stage at the Baxter theatre a long time ago.
