Just Off the Highway | Episode 33 | Irish in SA Part 2 Mysteries, Outlaws & Historical Consequences
Ойын-сауық
For hundreds of years, Irish convicts, the Irish Brigade of outlaws, bank robbers and even secret political dealings on the Johannesburg gold fields might all have shaped the history of South Africa and Ireland, leading to consequences that are still felt today. Al Prodgers pulls at threads and discovers intertwining stories.

My great grandad George Young jumped shipped in the 1800's in Grahamstown from a boat from Scotland (he was a convict headed for banishment to Australia). He ended up in Theunissen in the OFS).

good one, Al, so many fascinating twists and turns - just imagine, without the Foster Gang we wouldn’t have had Bok van Blerk’s hit De La Rey . . . 🤭😉

If they had allowed the convicts to land like in Australia the aborigines of South Africa would have been ethnically cleansed like they did in Australia.

Your forefathers, like Jan van Riebeeck who was a convict did kill and raped our forefathers. There's no need to make a joke about this.
Thanks for another enlightening video Al. An Irish passport is worth more than gold nowadays. My great grandmother was from County Cork, my great grandfather was a German/Jew, so he changed his name from Aschman to Ashman, due to the stigma, before emigrating to SA. Due to the name change after years of attemting every avenue possible, we were unable to aquire the golden ticket. However, as soon as you think you got a grasp on things, Mr Prodgers arrives and makes you feel silly for not knowing your heritage and history. As always, thank you and stay safe.

For a lot more interesting stuff about our history look for Rod Kruger. His knowledge is very valuable
Thank you for the interesting video. Please make a video on the Jeppe area. I often have to drive through this historic dilapidated area with the little houses or what is left of them that sits on the streets. I often wonder what is the history of the area. There is some really old buildings.

Yes, if I remember correctly, there's a connection between the street names and someone (name escapes me now) who was one of the founders of Wits University.
My Irish grandfather came to SA early 1900 he got married to a SA woman 1913. I would like to find out more about his background etc but it is very difficult.

Hi Cecily, I hope you don't mean that you can't believe one word of my stories. I assure you I've backed them up with more than one source. If you mean that powerful parties constantly try to edit history in their favour, then I agree with you.
