Just Off the Highway | Episode 25 | De Beer’s Pass and Rachel De Beer
Ойын-сауық
The obscure and tricky De Beer’s Pass nearly became part of the N3 Highway between Johannesburg and Durban. Al Prodgers drives the pass in winter and finds out where the events behind the story of heroic Rachel (Racheltjie) De Beer took place. Or did they? Al realises why the story is still relevant today.

Thanks for your kind comment.
This brings back memories from the Education Department of the Department of Indian Affairs in the Good Old Days. In History we had learned about South African heroes like Rachel de Beer, Wolraad Woltemade and the Padavattan Six. Unfortunately all this was thrust aside in the past few decades.

Thanks for your comment. Political changes cause some stories to be brought to the fore while others are pushed into the background. I suppose that's inevitable, but we can still learn valuable lessons from "unfashionable" stories.
Brilliantly told story of our history

It matters not if this legend is true or not. It is in the telling that makes it special. Well done Al

As I said, the story might not be true, but it is necessary.
Please, do not deny History.. only serves the purpose of our enemies.. In the book, 'The Robe', Lloyd C. Douglas said, 'It is cowardly to fight against the past and the History of a nation.'

Plesier! Ek stem heeltemal saam.
You do know its only a story amd it actuy neber happened. Its a legend and no more
And if we know for a fact that it's a tale from the USA quoted by Eugene Marais as a journalist from a newspaper there, what does it make this? Surely there were bravery and selfsacrifice among Afrikaner girls/women growing up in this harsh land?
