Him and Private Eye are the few journalists left who can be bothered to dig up an actual story. The rest of the media are too obsessed with whether Kate likes Meaghan or some other celeb gossip that's easy to print. Who do you blame most, the people that consume the gossip media or the hacks that feed it? I first heard the PO scandal on an episode of HIGNFY in 2020? so years late, I immediately subscribed to Private Eye.

God this country is a mess. (For those confused by the multiple names, Grant Shapps infamously '''allegedly''' took on multiple 'second jobs'/'scam jobs' while he was an MP in parliament and used pseudonym names to get around parliamentary rules. Its something he continues to deny to this but there is ample evidence on the internet to prove he was indeed those people. Also there is a hilarious video of him being chased down by a journalist and struggling to escape from him while completely ignoring said questions.)

They give people who feel victimised someone to blame, someone to fear, and then say they'll tak away that fear. "Mexicans are taking your jobs, we'll build a wall." "Foreign labour is pushing down wages and crippling social services , so we'll stop the boats." Common sense, honest, straight talkers like Iain get buried under the hateful imflammatory rhetoric.

The reason Ian Hislop is so great, is that he really doesn’t care if he ever gets invited back on these shows again; he’s not trying to sell anything, or be Mr. Popular, and that frees him up to say what he really feels, and unequivocally point out when politicians, journalists, presenters etc, are lying, or just being thick as mince. If more journalists didn’t care about access, & were willing to be unpopular, in their search for the truth, it would make it a lot harder for politicians to get away with being such corrupt, lying arseholes; it’s because of the sycophantic client journalists, who avoid asking the difficult questions because they enjoy hobnobbing with the rich and powerful, that allow politicians to do basically whatever they want, and be pretty sure that they’ll probably get away with it. If the majority of journalists were more like Ian Hislop is here in these clips, we might have a functioning press that actually works on behalf of the people…if only.

unfortunately our free press has many influencers with vested interests. True, we don't (appear to) have outright censorship, but the proprietors certainly have influence. The Murdoch group in particular has done a very great deal to manipulate a particular section of the populace to assist their views (and wallets), but it is not limited to them.

Yes, but..... Private Eye is a minuscule publication with a very limited reach. It's great that it exists, but it also shines a light on the absolute pathetic nature of what passes for a "free press" in the UK. The glory days of investigative journalism are long gone; the press is part of the problem now rather than part of the solution.

It's a shame that 'journalists' these days are afraid to ask the tough questions or to think for themselves. Ian's a shining example of actually listening to what's being said and forming a constructive opinion on that. You see the (lack of) thought process going through younger journalists' heads when someone says anything, they barely acknowledge what has been said, even if it's something worth pushing further on, they're only interested in reading through their pre-determined questions and getting out of there. Be more like Ian, please
