My Jupiter 9 (one with the notches in the focus ring) is actually sat on my desk as I watch this, fearing for its life. Awesome result, but I think I'll hold off taking mine apart until I can get another. :)

Just a note on acetone, don't smoke, have lit candles or any naked flame in the room. The fumes can ignite. You're better off using it outside, really. The fumes will go into your blood stream very easily, and damage your liver. So don't take it lightly :)

I don't really have any lenses that I can tear apart but this looks interesting. I'm especially interested in the fishing line flares. Do you think that an external filter version of the aperture disc + fishing line(s) would be reasonably effective? I'm sure I can cobble one together and try it. Thanks for these interesting videos; I haven't seen anyone on here playing with lens guts yet (lens reviews are all over the place though) so it's a real breath of fresh air.

I have a Jupiter-9 older version from 78 and I think someone took it apart and put it back together wrong because it renders photos with way too much softness, glare and very circular bokeh. It's very hard for any picture to come up looking good. Do you have any suggestion on how I can find out or learn if the front element has been reversed? Thanks.

I got into this project when googling for Jupiter-8 F2 lens articles. On another KZread video I saw, the Jupiter was praised for being made by the Eastern side of Germany, in the '60, by Zeiss. My quest is for high quality affordable video lenses, to use full-frame on Blackmagic Pocket camera, and the new 4K model when it's well market tested. No intention to be guinea pig buying right away. I use a Speedboster on my Pocket, in order to handle Nikon mount lenses. It would be great if I could assemble a package of four or five prime lenses. At first I should use spherical lenses, and later on will try anamorphic. The idea is film projects for the big screen, low budget but high quality. If anyone can share similar experiences assembling old lenses, it would be great. My idea is to go from 18mm to 100mm full frame 35mm lenses, which with the Speedbooster really get to maintain the original 35mm frame.

Oh, and I forgot to ask. After doing this whole project should the lens stretch out the image like an anamorphic projection lens or will the image maintain its appearance (other than the flare and "oval" bokeh)?

Tito Ferradans - Awesome! Do you offer lens mods/fixes as a business? I'm interested in moding this Mir 1b so that I can shorten the minimal focusing distance, which I understand is a simple process of removing two screws. I would never attempt it, because I would destroy the lens in my idiot attempt at doing this!

Eeehm, well I will say unpopular opinion, but what we get at the end of the process? Corrupted lens (good version of J-9), dirty bokeh because of dust on lenses, aaaand pseudo cinematic effect that can be easily reproduced in post. Yeah, it proves «we can do it», but at what cost? I would prefer making of better blackening coating to increase contrast.

Thanks,@@AnamorphicOnABudget I know what you mean, I also made experiment with H44-2 (there are millions of it so not a pity to break) - nice monocle, but anyway there are me and a few people more would prefer to save such heritage in almost mint condition for a better purposes. J9 is a very good lens as soon as it is Sonnar, glass and metal - not modern chinese plastic. Moreover I think it was sharp version due to some features. I believe for experiments it's better to use not brand-new-like but battered by life lens which are besides cheaper :)
