Really enjoyed your lens review and I’m glad that you changed your mind. I was lucky enough to purchase this lens about 3 weeks ago. My copy was manufactured in 1964 and came with a similar case and the three filters. While I’m very much a stills photographer, your beautifully produced video really portrays the dream like imagery from this lens. As you explained, it’s the combination of shallow depth-of-field, sharp centre and slightly blurred edges as well as the swirly Bokeh that appears in the right conditions. Definitely a heavy, almost over-the-top lens - it justly sits at the pinnacle of my vintage lens collection.

Thank you for the nice review. Old USSR chemical blue coating makes it render warm white balance, newer versions of this lens do not have it, but be careful this blue coating is very easy to scratch, or even remove with acetone or isopropyl alcohol ... It is fun lens to use with big draw backs of size and weight... I sold my version of the lens... Because I found much lighter and more versatile "Swirly bokeh monster" - nikkor Ai-s 85mm f1.4 stacked with 0.7 speed booster F to Z mount, this one swirls even more than Helios, but only 1:1 ration on the FF, but nikkor Ai-s 105/1.8 and 135/2 already covering full FF sensors...

It is a really lovely lens and self defense device. You may find yourself enjoying the Canon FL 58mm f/1.2. It also exhibits swirls and usually costs a lot less than other f/1.2 lenses and definitely a lot less than the Helios-40 (albeit isn't 85mm).

I have this lens and love it! I actually just shot a short film using it, the Helios 44-2, and Mir 1B with my Great Joy 1.35x anamorphic adapter, however the adapter needs you to really be at f/2.8 - f/4 at the widest, otherwise it's way too soft. Which unfortunately meant losing a lot of the lovely swirl.

I got one of these lenses about 2yrs ago after watching a video you did on these lenses, I used it on a Sony a6000 with a speed booster to eliminate the crop factor. I have since upgraded to the Fuji GFX 50r, and I really want to see if its image will fit properly on the medium-format sensor, but I don't want to buy an adapter and then find out that the lens won't work properly and can't cover the large sensor. So if anyone has experience with the Helios-40 on a Fuji GFX please let me know if it works or not!

I believe that many of the internal components are machined from steel or brass, which may contribute something like 30-45% of the lens weight. The cyclop 85 1.5 (same glass, stripped down body) weighs significantly less, and still has an excessively robust aluminum lens body.

I noticed the "face-on" shot of the lens on a white background seemed to show the elements have a distinct, warm filtration effect from the "radioactive" glass. Do you find this a strong part of the lens' appeal, or have you considered U.V.-ing it to make it clear again? Seems to me that a neutral starting point would allow for warming in post but would avoid *having* to remove it in post if it's *not* wanted, but taste is subjective. Just wondering...

I have long admired the Helios 40 for its imaging capabilities, and although I have seen many pictures made with this lens, only a few have really stood out as exceptional. There is more to the Helios 40 than bokeh. It is now a very expensive lens, with very few copies in good condition for sale, and it bothers me that it has become a cult collectors item. I don’t have one, although I can achieve the same Biotar type of optical rendering in the shorter focal length 58mm Helios 44.

I own this lens and it is a BEAST. Very heavy and, if I am honest, cumbersome. But, it's so beautiful that I just can't be mad at it. I do not like how uneven it feels on my mirrorless cameras, however, so I usually shoot it on an old Canon 5D Mark II. Sure, that makes the whole set up even heavier, but it just feels better in the hands that way and manual focusing is not a problem with the right adapter and a good focusing screen.

Hi Mathieu, Love your work.... I'm a big fan of the helios 40-2. There's a certain 'je ne sais quoi' that keeps bringing me back to it......I think no one would dispute that wide open, it is a low contrast lens and that probably contributes to it's dreamy look. What if one was to line the inside of the lens with Musuo dark paint/ flocking material. It would still flare, it's swirl, the 3d pop, the softness, the colour reproduction would still be there but more contrast. Would love to hear your opinion.
