I always like styles sharing techniques and becoming better because of it. Im a judoka and always laugh when keyboard bjj or mma "experts" say judo has no ground game to offer. But the Bjj guys who come to judo class in person are always hungry humble and eager to learn and share their techniques as well. All this Judo vs BJJ is from dudes who have never done it or have been doing it for a couple of months.

+vindicatedafi My favorite is when they accept being thrown so easily just to get to their ground game. One day I pulled up the mat and stood on the tile floor and said, "Okay, let's go." The BJJ'er wanted no part of that. Smart move on his part since my coach was one of the few that let us use kawazu gake in randori and I was itching to use it on the BBJ'er. LOL

@Steelmonger888 Very bad comment! 1. That was a very bad mma fight, no kick boxing technique from both of them, 2. Yoshida didn't dominate, just tried to be as stiff as he could be ( like a rock), 3. Since then, bjj has really evolved, while judo hasn't, so please check Lachlan Giles or Gordon Ryan's matches. I m sure you ll be amazed of the totally excellent control in leg locks 4. Very bad control of Royce, although Yoshida didn't do any other technique than the iezekiel in the end and a very clumsy leg lock

This is one of my favourite videos detailing Sangaku. Mike is so good at breaking down the little details. This technique and its variants so handy to attack the turtle. I came from a karate background where turtling meant getting your head kicked in. Now doing Judo, attacking turtle frustrated me to no end. Thanks guys!

Love your channel! I’ve been doing BJJ for about 2 years now, and am still a humble white belt. We have a totally awesome school with the best leaders ever! This attack on turtle really excited me; I’ve learnt quite a few techniques for attacking turtle position, but never this one… thank you so much for this technique. I’ll be sure to give it a go tonight (or sometime soon).

Great video, the sankaku jime was on point. I'm a judoka but recently started doing BJJ and yesterday in nogi i did the sankaku jime to attack my partner that was in the turtle. And he didn't expect it at all. It's something so common in Judo that everyone knows it, so I didn't think it would catch anyone of guard in BJJ. I was surprised and it'll definitely be my go to attack against the turtle in BJJ from now. That and a rolling okuri eri jime if I'm able to get a grip on the lapel.

@Stephan: Sir, I've seen Saulo Ribera demo a way to do turtle in one of his books. That said...what if your turtle position was more tighter (elbows tucked inside your legs and your chin tucked with your hands crossed protecting your neck)? Could this be why one would then just start striking the opponent in turtle position? Otherwise how would the Judo technique apply to a turtle that tight? You/or your training partners thoughts when you get a moment, please.

usually when my opponent turtles, i go for a crucifix, or when we're facing opposite ways i grab them around the waist and do a death roll or 2 and that seems to disorient them enough for me to either spin and get my hooks in to take the back or it allows me to grab numerous gi chokes or an arm-in guillotine or even a reverse full nelson transition to an omoplata/shoulder lock

I've done this in no-gi a number of times. Issues: It's harder to roll them over, but you can do it. It's also a lot harder to finish because it's difficult to control the arm not trapped in your triangle.

bjj is focus on newaza (grappling basically) Judo is grappling and stand up ( nage waza) both, there is competitive judo and combat judo. I think everyone knows the story of Mitsuya Maeda but none the less it is absolutely incredible how Brazilian jiujitsu has evolved on its own basically taking and modifying techniques from various art form into their own style of Newaza. One thing I hate to say is that BJJ player remind me of Kyokushin karate dudes of late 70's n 80's I hope they relax.

Also from bottom turtle Ude hishigi waki gatami .when the opponent is on top facing north south and your in turtle . Hook the arm from the bottom, sit out and preform an armpit lock . I use it all the time Gi and Nogi. Especially from a failed double leg.

  • @youmang

Learn to use this as control first cause it's hard to lock up the triangle/head arm choke. The arm finishes are golden though. I am a Judoka but we do plenty of JJ/Newaza. I love a rolling collar choke but this is good stuff. This is extremely effective in no-gi as well.

BJJ (Brasilian Jiu Jitsu) is modified Judo. The groundwork is greatly modified. Judo is modified Jiu Jitsu. Add Budo(Art of killing) to Judo and it becomes Jiu Jitsu. Judo groundwork has been greatly modified into two main(or rather famous) martial arts. BJJ and SamBO. Try Wikipedia for further information. It's always the most reliable source for almost anything including such things.

He doesn't show it full speed in this video. At full pace both legs are put into position at the same time. He's only breaking it down here. Yes there is a small chance of a single-leg if you don't get control of his right arm but there are always counters and counters to counters and counters to those counters; counters and counter-counters are like Pi in mathematics, never-ending. Done correctly you shouldn't have much trouble with the single-leg threat. Even if he shoots on it your (in this example) right leg should still be hooking his left arm so the hold should still be reasonably secure.

This is a good technique to attack someone who holds the turtle position for more than a few seconds; that means this technique will only be effective against judoka who are the only ones who believe the turtle position is an effective martial arts position. Outside of judo, the only BJJ players who would allow someone to do this primarily judo tournament attack will either be white belts or those that pretty much suck - a lot.

  • @BW022

It is. Look at any judo from the 90s and you'll see most of their time is spent on the ground. They changed to competition rules in the early 2000s to limit ground time in attempts to make Olympic TV ratings higher by encouraging more large throws. 'Old school' judo is 50/50 on the ground and most matched ended with a pin or submission. Even today... its a lot more than a little.

  • @BW022
    @BW02210 жыл бұрын

It doesn't matter. Either will give you similar levels of standing and ground until you get really skilled. After three to five years you'll see an edge in judo standing and BJJ on the ground. Even that is iffy -- especially if you are focusing time on another martial art. I like in Judo that the throws are powerful enough to stun or injure an opponent while remain standing -- you can disengage or strike. BJJ are more take downs committing yourself to the ground. Yet BJJ is tops in MMA.

They are supposed to be different. The Gracie who learned Judo greatly modified the Nae Waza. That's where the art of BJJ comes from. Anyways, that's just Fight Quest and Human Weapon. I don't know much about all this as I have never been in any form of grappling art. All the martial arts I have done are standup arts. But, I'm interested in grappling arts and want to learn them as well.

It's not interchangeable at all that's the only flaw in that paragraph. One is ground, one is standing.BJJ has a LITTLE stand up, and Judo has a LITTLE ground. Other than that and the fact that BJJ uses like, one throw from Judo, they are totally different.

The first roll from turtle was done wrong. He lowered the wrong leg after pinning the arm. You lower the leg that is on the same side that you are pinning because that lowers your center of gravity in the direction you want to roll in. So in the vid he traps with his left arm but drops his right leg......... no.

Mitsuya Maeda 'extracted' Judo from Jiu Jitsu by removing the Budo from it. He then taught it to Gracie in Brasil. That's when Gracie modified the Nae Waza and Brasillian Jiu Jitsu was born. Otherwise, the early Judo also had strikes involved. They are not taught now a days as they are illegal in the sport form and most Judo clubs are sports oriented.

for about 6 years ago you had alot of ground game in a fight . they change the rules 2013 and took away leg grapps , if you grabb the leg for a singel or doubble take down like morote gari you be disqualified , its a shame because judo has many leg graps techniques . 2017 they change the rules again about penalities and they took away the yuko , a low point .... but allowed more ground fight unless there is no action ,then the referee makes you stand upp . some techniques are banned in competition they are to dangerous ,you can look at them on youtube .we train them but we cant applie them in competition ,they are a part of the judo curiculum . armlocks or shokes or pinns no problem . hope this answer your question .
