How to adapt Judo for BJJ
Спорт
Mike Lee (www.h2oma.com/) and Stephan Kesting (www.grapplearts.com) talk about how to adapt Judo for BJJ, including how to maneuver inside the guard, and how to throw someone who is bending over at the waist and stiff-arming you

I'm always happy to see Bjj give a shout out to judo. Awesome newaza techniques. I'm going to have to try it the next time we train groundwork at the dojo
This stuff is awesome. I am learning BJJ now, but have a fair bit of experience in Judo (and other martial arts), and it's great to see someone put the two together in the way I am thinking about; without trying to tell someone that one is better. Both are awesome arts. Good stuff Stephan.

I am a 2nd Dan Judo Black Belt and I am quite good on the ground but I like BJJ because it has different set ups en entries than judo and this makes my ground fighting richer because I have a different perspective of ground fighting.

wow, that tiny-hopping-frog stuff looked surprisingly effective!
I really appreciated that example. I also have the benefit of knowing both Judo and Juijitsu. I have also tried to blend the two together as I still train in both. Thanks a million.
Dude, i feel the same way. I'm transitioning to BJJ from Judo. This was super helpful.
I love this stuff! Instead of just saying "oh well, I just use my superior balance from judo", he speaks about specific alterations to basic stance which makes his BJJ much more versatile and mobile. Also, it's no surprise to the question asked about standing 'super defensive' BJJ opponent in comp that he has counters to break into that since surely judo fighters surely come across/use similar such techniques themselves with that 'hips back, arms out' posture either in attack or defence.

Such defensive framing is penalized rather quickly in judo competitions. It's quite effective , that's why it's essentially banned. That said, of course there are ways around such a defense , there are some throws which could still be utilized. You can always attack/break the grips themselves.. Also, easier said than done, but you need to get the initiative in the gripping and the movement right off the bat, when you get to a decent spot you attack immediately. Thats essentially what judo is about. So if you develop a versatile aggressive judo style it could be somewhat effective in a bjj situation.

Kuldar Nei I found it to be effective in Judo class. We had to take turns defending and attacking. I was paired with a black belt, I’m a white belt. I didn’t bend over at the waist like the guy in the video, but I instinctively kept a low wide stance, broke his posture by keeping his head down with a collar grip, and a reasonable distance away. It worked well to defend, but yes, you can’t easily attack from that position when you’re not allowed to touch the legs. It’s tough because I’m not there for competition or points, I’m there to learn judo technique and timing, not the latest judo comp rules. I also train BJJ and don’t want to compete and don’t care about comp rules. I’m trying to balance what they ask of me without training to a rule set. My goal is self-defense, fitness, and fun.
This is perfect for me as I'm starting a judo class soon, and do BJJ regularly. Thanks!
Uchi mata is also a very good technique to penetrate bjj defensive posture

@@markd2797 Agreed, it takes a very long time to learn. Georgian grip to sumi-gaeshi is a far more efficient way for a non-judo person to learn how to deal with this posture. Russian two-on-one grip to sumi-gaeshi is great too. Also, pulling an opponent forward in a circle and switching to a cross-body driving osoto-gari (similar to what is shown in this video) is relatively easy to learn and works really well against most BJJ guys. Ankle picks, arm drags / collar drags, and taking shoots before the opponent gets two grips set are other great options for non-judo guys. Oh yeah, fireman's carry is pretty good too. And getting a waist grip on the side or behind and doing tani otoshi. I guess there are a lot of options. But for judo purists, nothing feels better than hitting an uchimata against a defensive, hunched over BJJ guy who thinks stiff-arming is going to keep you at bay. That's my favorite option against guys who are about my size (if they're a lot bigger than me, it's hard for me to get the power to lift them; my hips just aren't that strong).
I really like that you train other martial arts to improve yours. Thats the reason i watch your channel, finding ways for BJJ to improve my Judo-skills.
on fridays at my gym, we have this guy Dave that teaches the intermediate classes, He's only a purple belt in jiu jitsu but also a black belt in judo, and he is an awesome teacher
Great insight. I am going to try and apply some of these techniques in my newaza training
That hop over butterfly guard was crazy. Some really good stuff. All martial arts start to lose effectiveness as they turn away from fighting and towards sport competition. The Olympics really set back Judo and TKD. I think you could argue BJJ is becoming less effective as the focus on tournaments takes it similarly away from street fighting (btw I love and train BJJ). Judo is such a great compliment to BJJ.

The desperation to stay in the Olympics forced the judo rule changes. I’m disappointed with it. I asked my instructors if we’ll still learn all judo techniques and as they’re old school competitors from the 60s they said yes, we need to know the full curriculum for testing.

That was a very interesting video I have been doing bjj for 2 months and I love how the judo can be mixed in with it I e the throws ect brilliant really good video Stephen kesting
i am a pure judo guy, i really like these videos, very helpful!
I have done judo for 4 years, and apparently I'm fortunate in that our Newaza sessions very closely resemble bjj. We do the tournament type stuff where we have time restraints but my Sensei is also a big Newaza fiend and we have two hour roll sessions regularly. I also do bjj but please don't discount kudos ground techniques......after all bjj was made from judo. And these videos are good, I enjoy watching them.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Basically Just Judo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu looks just like Judo, because it is Basically Just Judo. When Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Conde Koma", began teaching Carlos Gracie in Belem do Para, Brazil in 1917, he was teaching Jigoro Kano's Jiu-Jitsu direct from the Kodokan in Japan. The name "Judo" was not popularized until 1925. Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo instructor whose specialty was ground fighting (newaza). This type of ground-only fighting is often referred to as Kosen Judo, or High School Judo, because it was popularized in Japanese High Schools as a form of interscholastic wrestling. Kosen Judo rules allowed direct transition to newaza, enabling scenarios where one less skilled competitor could drag the other down to the ground (a tactic now known as "pulling-guard" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). There is absolutely no question that the Gracie family demonstrated great skill and marketing acumen by promoting "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the masses. Helio Gracie's loss to Kodokan Judoka Masahiko Kimura was advertised as a "moral victory". More importantly, the Gracies sponsored the original Ultimate Fighting Championships when the world was begging for a professional combat sport with more depth than Boxing and more realism than the WWF. However, there is now a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students who only know half the story. Worse yet, they are often paying enormous prices for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu name only to learn a subset of Jigoro Kano's original Jiu-Jitsu techniques and teaching methods. The Judo world has not been without fault too. High ranking judoka often looked down on the new popular MMA world due to Judo's Olympic status. As a result, most Judo schools have been over-emphasizing the throwing techniques within Judo due to pressure from the International Olympic Comittee to increase ratings on TV for the brief moments when Olympic Judo would receive air time. Similarly, there is a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students, and now instructors, who incorrectly think Judo is nothing but a standing sport. Fortunately, the phenomenal success of Ronda Rousey, 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist and UFC / MMA Champion has brought attention back to the accurate history of Judo and its rightful place in the Jiu-Jitsu grappling world.

well done,, thanks for the sharing bro.. these tips are pretty much valuable..
man, that transition of the body would set up a sick harai goshi.
Damn that o soto is awesome. Really good advice
Very nice grappling skills if you croos train these arts properly. Even better if you have an instructor who is skilled in both instead of practicing each art separately.
Luv any grappling
That really was a nice osoto. A white belt would probably not be able to do that. Not too long ago a 6th dan demonstrated his osoto on me which was his favorite technique. Extremely strong even for a 60-70 year old man. Would hate to be on the end of it when he was in his prime where he said he used to drive with everything he had. Just his demonstration osoto would knock the wind out of me.
This is fascinating!
Soo good , I can't wait to use what iv'e learned from this vid. JUDO !!!
You should also show one of the most important things in gi and thats grip breaking i did judo 9 years and bjj 3 i will say to all bjj guys learn grip fighting on your stand up if you train gi it will help your game alot
Osoto gari is the most powerful and reliable throw to use against anybody, especially against people that know some grappling.
Aré there any videos of BJJ fighting judo rules?
So I'm going to be another one of those guys. I am always surprised when Bjj guys always compare Bjj with judo. A d the Bjj guy is always surprised when they see a judo technique working for them. Btw I'm a Bjj guy but a former traditional guy. What makes me chuckle is that many Bjj guys don't know what they are actually practicing IS JUDO. It's judo newaza. Actually it's Kosen Judo. Look it up. And stop being so surprised guys.
Great techniques displayed here, in my personal opinion I believe Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza applies traditional Judo techniques in BJJ with the best effect that we've seen so far.

I have started to training my 6 years old kid and daughter Maui Thai and I will also wanna enroll them after 6 month to jju at be align both ground and high control Both jju and Maui Thai a strong sports I was looking to judo instead of the jju but I guess jju is more practical outside the organized games Any suggestions from experts in both sports
So where does the Kzushi come into play while hooking?
Oh and remember professor Jigoro Kano had a degree in education and engineering he applied his formal knowledge of both fields with jujitsu to refine jujitsu and bring it into modern times aka Judo. Removing any techniques that required greater strength. He designed it into a totally scientific system. Lets all remember there were no samurais in Brazil.
And reason why i said 10th planet judo is because only Hayastan Academy is the only judo school that has "no gi judo" so if all the judokas were to gather up with some greco roman guys try to put some grip work in for no gi and make literally all the throws viable for no gi which then makes MMA clinch throws more fascinating.
The thing that worries me with that hopping is what do you do when someone pulls you forward
Damn he flipped that like nothing... Walked off thinking yuppp I see what you mean
Good idea
Great! I love sitting judo THROWS, bjj can be too passive at time :-))
our gym trains, starting on the feet so having a solid number of takedowns is helpful to put you in a better position to attempt a submission, Judo and Jiu jitsu go hand in hand no reason why both shouldn't be used together
man that was a nice osoto... that was a black belt judo throw there
Seeing Judo seamlessly transition into BJJ with perfect technique beautiful.

They said that hooking is all about superior strength. If that's the case, then, when does the Kzushi(Balance break) come into play?

at 4.06 when he hops around him you can actually see the point where he breaks his balance before executing the throw It is hard to see unless you go frame by frame.
@killersalmon4359

Yeah - it happens when he hooks the guy's leg - you can see the blue belt's weight shift so that he's heavy on his right leg - at that point, his structure is broken and its safe for the Tori (thrower) to make that hop and complete the throw.
it's such a typical question for people new to judo - how do I throw someone that's really defensive? And the truth is, for people who are more experienced, acting that way is GIVING the other person a throw, like the Osoto gake, or a tai-o or whatever. That's why judoka don't stand like that, it limits your options - not only are you not really any harder to throw, you can't do shit from there.

well said, and i also like the Standing part of Judo and all the techniques to throw someone. You don´t start anything on the Floor in real Situation.

mike lee is a boss :D
Actually Judo is used in MMA more often than people think. In fact if you had taken gi away, a judo match would have looked like a wrestling match :)

Bro you're crazy it always works for me. Well because I have Judo background and I've drilled 100 times. I'm not sure about you?
Como assim adaptar o judo para o jiu-jitsu? O judo FAZ PARTE do jiu-jitsu tendo, inclusive, "saído" deste ultimo. Como pode uma arte marcial milenar ter faixas pretas que desconhecem sua historia?
The Camarillo Bros are a clinic on how to mix Judo into BJJ ..
zero excitement in the audience, this is great stuff lol
Actually only the scramble would look like a wrestling match. You can't really pull off the nice throws if BOTH wrestlers are low to the ground. So Judo would look like Greco-Roman but with the attack of the legs - minus the single and doubles. which imo it looks better for the spectators.
Insane
I am sitting here after the video still thinking about how he just used a sode from the ground
ah my throw is harai goshi not ososto gari but believe me it always work for a opponent who plays from the defencive position
Judo is awesome

Yeah, Torque and Center of Gravity and stuff like that. Good thing...

Good,,, job stephan.... This guy is awesome....
if it were all about strength then he wouldn't have to turn his body would he? he turns to change the angle of the throw, hooks to bring himself in and all the while he's twisting uke's body. hooking around the knee also bends uke's knee causing him to lose his base making his resistance weaker. no judo throws are ALL about strength, not even the lifting one's like kata guruma or te guruma. it's the gentle way my friend
Just like Koji Komuro, Shinya Aoki, Roger Gracie, Rodolfo Viera, Marcelo Garcia, and Andre Galvao practice Judo long ago before transition into BJJ.
Yes that makes perfect sense, but we're talking about martial artists and athletes. Not the sedentary people who don't exercise. Those who are training should train to be able to do this. Anyone can improve their flexibility at any age (unless injury prevents) so there is no reason they couldn't use the kneeling techniques at some point.
judo is the best

Different branches of the same tree.
My guess is that you are not employing your power hand correctly.
I think that's a bit too stereotyped between Asian and Caucasian ability within martial arts though. In my Karate school here in England we have quite a few 50+ year olds (caucasian males) still maintaining flat splits and throwing very high kicks. If you train one of the arts you should train and not to let your mobility go. If you're dedicated enough at least.
