I have to give praise to Marin Hinkle the actress who play Judith. She played her part absolutely perfect as a miserable, horrible woman.

I remember reading that she didn't liked playing her because she was terrible, absolutely no redeeming qualities. I mean, her only likeable trait was her love for Jake but even she started hating him as the seasons went on.

She did a fantastic job in the role. But I can see her point as Judith is a horrible person. Perhaps if they had some of the writers who created Peg Bundy or Marcy D’arcy it would’ve worked better?

@@baumwolke2078 In the US there is Child Support and Spousal Support (also known as Alimony). Child support covers living expenses for the child and the cost of medical and this typically lasts until the child turns 18. Spousal Support is payments directly to the spouse to allow them to maintain the same lifestyle they had when married. Spousal Support in many States lasts basically forever and only stops if the receiving spouse remarries (like in the show) or one of them dies. Men get taken to the cleaners in Divorce Court in the US. I saw a case where the Wife cheated, got pregnant with another mans child, filed for divorce to be with her lover, and still got the house, the car, child support, spousal support, half his retirement, half his investments, and half of his Social Security when he hit 62yo. The Ex-Wife never remarried and the Ex-Husband paid 50% of his income in Spousal Support for 51 years before he died.

@@1drink2drink-ty4fjseems like modern American sitcoms tend to either purposely choose to have their characters shown to be unabashedly horrible people (I call it “the Seinfeld effect”, but a more recent/current example would probably be “it’s always sunny in Philadelphia” as well as arguably shows such as “married with children”, the American version of “the office”, etc) or tend to try to be “award winning” types (which I guess could be called the “modern family” effect). Long gone it seems are the type of shows that for the most part are supposed to just make you feel good while watching and at least in the time they were made, have characters that would be considered likable (like for example, “friends” or I suppose the older, if more corny by todays standards “the Brady bunch”)

3,875 a month for alimony? I'm 57 and became disabled 4 and 1/2 years ago and I only get $1,841. And I'm slowly going into credit card debt. And I'm going through a divorce. That's the difference between California and small towns in Northwest Ohio

I think the alimony included the child support, $4k 15 years ago is approximately $10k now, and nobody can survive after paying $10k/month. Child support only paid until the kids turn to 18, but alimony is for life. That's horrible. Smart men shall not get marriage, it's too much risk and little reward.

Divorced men are counted as "single" when those stats are complied. Since a man is 7 times more likely to off himself in the year after divorce than any other time in his life, it's an atrocious way of cooking the books. Marriage is literally deadly for many men.
