JSB vs Reflexx - The Legend of Max (DDR)

Ойын-сауық

This video is about two guys, JSB and Reflexx, who are in a DDR Tournament at CSA2 in Albany, NY (got the location's name from Barcodeplane). They are playing a song called The Legend of Max on Dance Dance Revolution Extreme(DDR). JSB is on the left and Reflexx is on the right.
On a side note, I wasn't present at this tournament. I saw this vid on another website (which I forgot cause it was years ago.) and saw it wasn't up on KZread. So I decided to upload it up.

    The thing about this video... you have to keep in mind that I believe this tournament happened in late 2003. All things considered, not many people really played on the level that these guys played at on the East Coast at this time. This was one of the bigger events, and really impressive for its time.

    Regret not being around or old enough to witness tournaments like these... but age is something I can't control lol. Heard funny perspectives about the myth of JSB... but he was a really good player. Guess it must've been mindblowing in the day to have a literal king when now there's tons of them. Poor guy Reflexx doesn't look like he's trying much, not unless it was a tough tournament for its time. How would they play on today's charts? Y'all be in your mid-30s/40s by now. 😅

  • @neferazure

    @neferazure

    2 жыл бұрын

    We're in our 30s now and many of us are still beasting away. JSB no longer plays competitively or at all, really. He'll mess around but he doesn't take it seriously anymore just will play for fun. He's a funny guy, too. Around this time there was a reason he played at this level. He had his little sister to look after and so he would travel the country competing for the prize money so he could be able to take care of/look after her. Diet was very strict, and he couldn't afford to lose, so he made sure he didn't. Still makes sure his little sis is well taken care of till this day. That can be a good form of motivation, I'd say. 😊 This tournament was huge at the time, it was East Coast vs West Coast national level tournament and JSB was the top West Coast Player and Reflexx was the top East Coast player. Reflexx wasn't a horrible player and def didn't get to where he was being a horrible player. JSB simply out-classed him and paced himself well. Reflexx on the other hand, didn't pace himself correctly which left him gassed less than halfway through the song. This was the tournament finale as well. A lot of tourney-goers knew that if JSB showed up to a tourney (and you never could tell if he was going to show up somewhere, he never announced it or anything, just popped up lol), well, there goes that prize money. Usually the money was a prize pool, from everyone paying a small fee to enter the tournaments. So JSB would beat the tournaments and get a huge return after paying his relatively small entry fee. I believe there is also a documentary that shows more footage of him as well.

    He's still around, doesn't really play dance games much anymore. He'll mess around, but he's no longer competitive. And he's still a funny guy and cool to be around. I've known him since 2001 so 20yrs now. Crazy when you consider that I now have a 17yr old daughter lol. Met him during my junior or sophomore year in HS, I believe he was a senior. We used to play at Aladdin's Castle at Del Amo Mall in Torrance, and at Gable House whenever the mall would close for the night. And sometimes at Arcade Infinity. Now I'm remembering all the amazing arcades that have bit the dust over the last decade, Arcade Infinity was one of the first to go, Aladdin's Castle pre-dated it and during my first year of college. The feels. lol. Around this time, JSB would travel across the US competing in tournaments to take care of himself and his little sister. Which is why he couldn't afford to lose, and he didn't. His diet was also very strict and high in protein which is why he had so much stamina. Most people would hate on him because they knew if he showed up to a tourney, they pretty much could kiss that prize money good-bye lol 😅😅😂😂 He is considered the first "unoffical" professional rhythm gamer, while DOLCE is the first official professional rhythm gamer since he was actually hired by Konami. Would be cool to see Konami give JSB some sort of accolades for the many barriers he broke in DDR. JSB showed everyone that there was a higher level that could be reached at the time; most couldn't even process the idea of playing at that high of a level let alone pass the song at all. Of course ITG took dance games to an even higher level to a point folks actually warm up with TLOM now lol. He also went on to AAA Paranoia Survivor Maxx around this time; I witnessed it in person. It was amazing and legendary for the time (2003). I also still play til this day, but not competitively. It has helped me a lot with recovering from my recent surgery. So I just do it for the cardio and to keep in shape and work up a little sweat. I'm having to practically start from scratch now, but I'm working my way up. I'm now passing 12s and 13s again, which is great for coming out of such a major surgery. It's all coming back to me lol. Anyway, if you're ever in an arcade in LA, you may run into him sometime (rare but it can happen). It's not his frequent hangout but he still comes around sometimes. 😊

    @@neferazure I don't recall Johnny ever aaaing psmo. If he did, it definitely wasn't in 03. I remember it was a big deal when a pic of him aaaing Maxx unlimited made it on to AIJ, but that was in like 2004...maybe 2005 and it was a big deal because he'd already stopped playing competitively at that point and people were excited that he was still capable of doing something impressive. But yes, he was the best player in the US for a few years and an absolute legend for people like me that grew up playing the pre supernova mixes; he was our Yasu.
