Regarding Tony and his JPEG vs RAW discourse. I think people have been too hard on Tony. After watching his video, there seems to be some semantic issues only. Or more precisely, splitting hairs. It is evident to me that Tony recommends RAW unequivocally if quality is the criteria for the images you are producing. I have just very closely scrutinsing the images from yesterdays shoot for ELLE magazine. I shot everything in RAW + Fine JPEG... In a WORD or a few...DO NOT SHOOT JPEG if you really care about your images. The difference is flagrant. JPEGs are mushy almost renedering like a very subtle water color effect. Now when I imported my RAW either using Adobe ACR or Iridient and disabling both thesharpening and noise reduction defaults to zero and importing in to Photoshop and then sharpening to my taste at 180 % at 0.4 pixels....JUST WOW!!!! As good or close to as good to my eyes as my Nikon D800e until of course you enlarge to 100% where the Nikon file is obviously 33% larger. Avoid JPEG if you are producing for press ro Hi Rez usage advertising and editorial!

Danilo Costa Viana my point is, there are a ton of informative videos out there about the technicality of different file formats. When a photographer gets to the poin of understanding what a raw file is, then for sure he'll know what format to shoot in, when and what to do with them. That said, I don't see any reason for more videos like this nor like the previous one. I like Tony, but he shouldn't waste his neurons on this subject. TGIF! :)

I have NEVER seen more bigoted and jumpy people in the field of photography vs other fields of art. And I have seen MANY fields both as hobby and work in my ENTIRE life. I have NEVER seen a field that spends all day talking about technology and gadgets vs the art itself. And NEVER so much hostility in every discussion. To put this into perspective, comments in other fields would be like these if the people are the same: A Casio? Get a Steinway or give up piano please. What? Acrylic? Pros use oil rofl. Ew solo freestyle. Dancing is a conversation! Tony I have been following your channel for a while and I admit sometimes when you guys seem to favor more premium gadgets I would roll my eyes a little. But when you said you believe everyone should be able to take up photography regardless of budget, you earned my full respect. This is true passion for art and this sets you apart from many other photography channels out there.

People do argue about the best acrylic paint or the best oil paint to use (oil VS acrylic is more like Photo vs TV, two different mediums). People do argue over the best pianos too. I constantly point out how dancers who cannot keep a rhythm win competitions just because they are more acrobatic / more athletic and lament about the amazing dancers that should have won... If there is a subject that a human can be passionate about then they will want to talk about it and with passions they are not always 100% logical so you will have differing opinions.

The funny thing is photographers like to boast and talk about their gear, the newest cameras, lenses and gadgets, settings but in the end they say 'the gear doesn't matter, it's the photographer'.... Who cares about the settings if the pic is great ? And iso, shutterspeed, aperture are not as hard to understand, seems like photographers want to make things more complicated than they are. Playing guitar or piano is WAY harder

Yes so many hostile arguments about gear , settings , and format in photography .it gets old very fast . Maybe I am just getting into the hobby and I have made my initial investment but I can't do anything else right now... would you still tell me to give up and get another hobby? When people make those comments it annoys me. Why are their always elitest. The sad thing is, it's not just photography... I see these attitudes and arguments in the sewing groups, photography groups, baking.. everything.. if you are "serious" or a "real" hobbiest you have to do things this one way.

Yet the question is what makes one a " professional " in the field of photography ? Because you sell your work ? Your actual skill behind the camera not the editing software ? Because you do weddings ?

DNELL GOTTA I have moved away from his channel but I still think there is some value there, however, it's not just him. I belong to a couple of portrait photography groups on facebook and the comments people make are just evil. In the most unpolite society, they couldn't pass for Constructive criticism. Its a lot of people sadly. It's also frustrating because lots of hobbies will always have elitest, but I have noticed photographers are the worst. I have just learned to find photographers whose style resonate with me, or that I admire and listen to their feedback, follow them on social media, try to engage in discussion with them, etc.

I have been watching you guys for years. I've relearned things forgotten along with learning new ways and ideas. Seeing how far you guys have come with photography pushes me to get to that point one day, and also to share my knowledge like you have. I'm in the midst of trying to go full time with my photography and alot of what you said is true. I dont have all the money needed to get all the equipment I want, but I have to make due for what u have and sometimes DIY equipment. So hearing someone who literally has just about everything they need talk about to us on our level makes me feel connected more so to what you say. $10 goes along way. Saving for lenses seems like an unattainable goal but yet we do it. We do it to get to the next level. So thank you for understanding people like me who wants to get there but has to do it on a budget. 🙏📸

Thanks to Tony for the second video for clarifying his view... It was brillant. and sometime we need those little conflict to keep our edge, that's how we grow in life.

I just bought my first DSLR (Canon 77D) and have been researching how-to's from a few different youtubers, Jared included. But your videos have been the most consistent in quality and content, and very easy to understand! I love that you acknowledged everyone who owns a camera is different, with different styles and budget - it's not just cut and dry. Like another commenter mentioned, you have made detailed tutorials on certain cameras which helped me fully grasp how to use my new camera. You put a lot of dedication in your videos and it shows. I used to not spend much time on youtube and therefore don't have many subscriptions, but after watching this video I couldn't not subscribe! Well done! No longer going to waste time watching Jared Polin. Wasn't that big of a fan anyway :)

you know this video is really interesting because it shows how wound up we are in the technology of cameras rather than the art. I had an eye opening experience today where this videographer I was on a shoot with created these amazing videos, yet she ran her camera on full auto mode, and didn't really understand what 4k or 1080p was even. Yet her videos are incredible. I was like, oh yeah, I use my camera on manual and use RAW file format, and understand the technology, yet there's people out there making much better work who don't care about the technology or file formats. Real eye opener.

Tony - Incredibly well-put. Though I have been an avid photographer for decades and have a wall full of photography books (including some of yours), I subscribe to and watch ALL of your videos because I enjoy your articulate, thoughtful and concise presentation of information. You do a great job of covering not only about things I am quite familiar with, like DSLR's, Photoshop and Lightroom, but also things I would like to know more about like aerial photography using quads or possilby moving to a smaller, mirrorless camera. I have, in fact, found myself playing one of your videos to my spouse rather than attempting to explain photographic concepts to her. (If only I can use your video to convince her that I really NEED that DJI Phantom 4 Pro). By contrast, I find Jared's videos to be loud, bombastic and filled with more sound than information. Your gentility and civility in responding to what appears to be an effort by Jared to boostrap his KZread presence through a manufactured "dispute" with you is the icing on the cake. Very much appreciate what you and Chelsea are doing. Please keep it up!

As the quote goes, we can disagree without being disagreeable. Let’s all keep it classy. Photography is a great art and one of the things I learned early on is you learn all the rules and then break them! That’s the beauty in art and experimentation. To be fair, if you wear a shirt, wrist bands and underwear that says "I shoot RAW", you might be inclined to take JPEGs a little more personally than necessary... Also, why is the file format you shoot such a touchy topic for people? If you get the shot, you get the shot. You do you.

It only starts mattering when it comes to professional work. Even then, the practicality of RAW is debatable and it depends when it comes to the actual heat of the job. As far as I know, its all about the clients. If they can make their clients happy with JPEGs, then so be it. If they prefer to make them happy with RAW, then so be it.

It has nothing to do with whether he was right or not, it was the fact that he called Tony out for seemingly no reason and just starting internet beef. It was childish.

Literally everything Jared does is uncool.

I see both points of view, but Jared did not handle the situation professionally. He could have made the same video and points without attacking Tony just to get clicks. Tony is addressing a larger audience beyond just full-time pros.

+cliff medina It's not flat wrong. Hardly anything can be that clear cut anyway. It could have been better. But it basically said if you're not a pro, don't shoot jpeg. Pros will decide when it's necessary (like shooting sports). And when you decide you're good enough to make that decision, one of the first examples is you might do it at events that are not super important.

I remember the first camera video I watched on youtube was something from the fro guy. Eventually I found videos from Tony and realized Tony is infinitely better in every way.

he seems disingenuous when discussing products - he says what the manufacturer wants.

Hi Tony, thank you for patiently explaining everything. I don’t really know why a discussion raw vs jpg has to end in an emotional exchange. From a technical point of view, your video discusses all the relevant technical info and you explain very well how things work. From there, people have to figure out for themselves how the approach raw and/or jpg. I personally shoot raw + jpg for paid jobs or in difficult light. I generally use jpg-only for sports/wildlife… but not always. And generally I just look around and adjust the settings of my camera to my best knowledge, and when I get something wrong, I try to learn from it. That approach works for me.
