Journalist Tavis Smiley Launched First and Only Black Talk Radio Station

Veteran journalist Tavis Smiley talks about his new venture: the first, and only, Black talk radio station west of the Mississippi.
Smiley goes on to discuss the significance of owning the distribution rather than just the content aspect of broadcasting. Smiley talks about how in this new era of racial reckoning, it is important to tell the stories of African Americans that are not being told or overlooked.
Smiley says, “The problem is that for too long talk radio in this country, and certainly in the multi-racial city believe it or not, has been all day, all night, all white. And something about that has to change. There has be a platform for people of color and other progressive voices to have their say.”
All this and more on “Start Your Day.”

Tavis was tickle pink and in awe of his favorite cast member from Sesame Street. Tavis was four years old when Sesame Street premiered on PBS; Maria Figueroa was a teenager. Can you believe that? I hope he gives Black people a chance to prove that we don't need our news and information to be accompanied or cloaked in entertainment, for us to consume it. The advancement of Black people IMO, suffers from it being so heavily intertwined with entertainment, and the propagated notion that discussion of an argumentative and bombastic nature, is the only form of discussion that appeals to us. The need for profit is often antithetical to the idea of liberation. The shock jock (draw a crowd and sell something) form of Black talk shows, have done nothing to lessen fundamental social problems like violence, drug addiction, and low educational achievement among us. Any talk we engage in, should be purposeful and productive. We don't need help to entertain ourselves. There is plenty of that available. Besides, we are very capable and creative, in doing that for ourselves, in our personal circles. In fact we might be too good at it, compared to being creative in finding ways to be more of a community among those we live around, and finding ways to support ourselves, that are not self-destructive and community destroying in nature. Maybe Smiley will use this new vehicle to finish the work of creating or finally begin the task of creating a true 'Black Agenda'. Previous concepts of this "agenda" have not been Black Agendas at all. They have been government agendas - a list of things for not Black people to do, but for the government to do for us. We still have never met the call to first do all we can for ourselves. We can't depend on, let alone make the government do much of anything, in our weakened state, as a group. We have to strengthen ourselves to counter the negative force exerted against us, before we can build the strength necessary to effectively fight against it, offensively. This is the approach that the Booker T. Washingtons , Marcus Garveys, Elijah Muhammads, Neeley Fuller Jr.s and the late Dr. Francis Cress Welsing, said we should do. The last two made the term racism so-called White supremacy a household word among us. What other word or term is used more today by us other than its kin phrase "structural and system racism'? Logic dictates that a systemic/coordinated response is required to counter a systemic force working against you. This basic/fundamental has to be understood and acted upon by the vast majority of Black people in the U.S., as is the latest dance, is universally excepted and copied by us. If we are not taking the first step and saying this, all other talk, will produce no more, than what it has, to this point.
