The man, was incredible. The author of this song, wrote the lyrics, on his way to Mexico City, to burry his mother. The song is NOT about a woman, or a lost love. But the love of one's mother, that will never return. In 1970, at the OTI festival, Jose Jose, won a coin toss up. It was him, and another female singer.He won the toss up. He had only 1 song, in 1969, before this. But this is the song, that blew him up, overnight. He actually won 3rd place, at the prestigious OTI Festival. But because of his incredible performance, he was coined "El gran perdedor" (the greatest loser). He'd become an international superstar. Mexico's highest grossing singer. RIP

Side note: the composer wrote this song in honor of his mother, who past away. He wrote it on a plane when he was going to her funeral. Also, for the majority of the attendees, this was the first time they heard of this skinny, young guy. In fact, Roberto Cantoral, the song writer, wanted to participate with his song on this music festival. Problem was, he didn't have a singer. In a reunion, he was told there were a couple of relatively unknown singers: a women who was starting to be heard on the radio and a kid called Jose Jose. So, Roberto did the most logical thing. He wrote both singers' names on two pieces of paper, grabbed a hat, put these papers inside the hat and whichever came out first was the one who would be singing it. And fate decided Jose Jose was the first name to come out that hat. This video you see was the first time this song was preformed, ever. After this, Jose Jose turned into a famous singer at age 22.

He was Frank Sinatra's favorite singer, when he heard it the first time he said: "When this boy breathes." Every year I saw him singing in Las Vegas. Frank described him as the best singer he had ever heard.

That drummer was wildlin' out towards the end. He literally said "Now's my time" lol

He was the “prince of song” and is one of the icons of Mexican music along side Juan Gabriel. He will never be forgotten ❤️

The person who wrote this song wrote for his mother who passed away. He wrote it on airplane enroute to her funeral. When the time I came for this festival it was a cross between two other singers. They drew names out of a hat and Jose was chosen. Although he came in 3rd place he was named the prince of song without a crown and the rest is history

Bit of context here: That song was written for the composer's deceased mother, it wasn't for a wife or a lover. Also, this presentation was made during a singing contest in the 70's, which HE LOST. And then went on to become the greatest singer of his time.

@@sakangas4606 Yes I have, they became part of my culture and were present during my upbringing. It is known that the contest was stolen from José to further the career of somebody who had ties to the owner of the main broadcasting company in Mexico at the moment.

For a better meaning: "Saborear mi dolor" means "Enjoying the flavor of my pain" The lyrics are very deep in this song.

Some facts about this video: - This was a Latin America singing contest (USA, Spain and Portugal were later invited) , which José José ended up at 3rd (still unexplained) where Brazil and Venezuela won 1st and 2nd place respectively. - Because of his 3rd. place was named "El Príncipe de la canción" / "The Prince of the song" (sorry Prince fans), also his coat looks like a main character from a book named "El Principito" / "Little Prince", José José accepted this name releasing a song called "Príncipe" seven years later. - Mentioned coat was a last-minute borrow - Even with a couple non-successful released albums, he wasn't famous until this presentation.

It was for his mother who pass away while he was in Eroupe with his wife and when he wrote it and Jose Jose was suggested to sing it Roberto ( author name) had his doubts because Jose Jose was so young well he was in his 20 and Roberto tought he wasn't going to be able to put that magic that a singer once in a while put in it

José José was one of the most influential and respected singers not only in Mexico (his home country) but also in the entire Latin American continent. José was called "El Príncipe de la Canción", which literally means The Prince of Song. He had an extremely successful and long career.

Ese video es del Festival OTI Premio de la Canción Latina. Que se celebró el 15 de marzo de 1970, José José participó en esta segunda edición del Festival de la Canción Latina, realizado en la Ciudad de México. Y aunque esa noche quedó en tercer lugar, su interpretación de "El Triste" se ganó el corazón de los mexicanos y marcó uno de los momentos estelares de la televisión. Ya que el público lo ovacionó de pie durante varios minutos y le lanzaron flores al escenario, su interpretación fue tan emotiva y emocionante que se pensó que él ganaría, sin embargo, la concursante de Brasil, Claudya le arrebató el primer lugar y José José con el título del campeón si corona se quedo en el tercer lugar😔. Años mas tardes la de brasil no sobresalió con su música pero José José logro colocarse como uno de los Grandes de America tanto que le decian el "Príncipe de la Canción".
