If you want to point to an event that impacted his form: the passing of his child. You’d need to be ignorant or cruel to dismiss that fact. Compound on that ETH’s need to make an example of him with the younger players. What little success he had with Ajax depended on having a young, impressionable squad. That’s who he is, a coach for the youth, not the elite. The best managers look for the best way to get the most out of their top-players, and he hasn’t been able to do that. Time will tell.

I think Simon has found his calling. He can talk as much as he likes, and his contribution to the game is his opinion. Just like the rest of us. As regards to actually being involved in football this is a God send. Can you imagine listening to him if he was an owner? Talksport is his level.

Why would there have been a discussion about playing time. I would have thought everyone would assume Ronaldo would play, but then he wanted to leave and missed the whole pre-season. Then it’s taken him time to get fully fit, and he’s not having great performances really but will get there. Ten Hag is doing a good job. Ronaldos always having a moan whatever club he’s in and that’s fine. He’s still going to play and score goals, the rest of his game has just faded that a all. He more of a moments player now who will get himself into good positions in the box.

Other people lose children, wives, husbands and are still expected to show up to work at the bare minimum. Just because of his statist doesn’t mean less should be expected. He was given his compassionate leave. The big issue was how long he took to request a transfer, knowing the clubs circumstances, and not accepting the one offer that came in for him when it did

Souness is right, that is why the club finds itself in the position it does with Ronaldo now. If he REALLY wants to Play, he could go to Napoli or back to Sporting. Why didn't he do that ? You see it's not United who created this mess in the first place. He could have committed to the Club earlier in pre season but he bailed and wanted to leave. United and The Fans weren't expecting that. It was Ronaldo who disrespected Ten Hag and The Club. If he is a Professional he should offer a formal apology and sort this all out. Ronaldo still very better off in front. France Played a Giroud who had no shot on target all through the competition and still won the cup. Football is about taking up roles and doing it well. Last season, Ronaldo was a saviour, but you'll not realize this because we still had half chance to play Europa league because of the goals he scored. He played in an era where you didn't need much skill as a footballer to be successful. He wouldn't survive in todays game

It's obvious for everyone not obsessed with Ronaldos' status that he's invited himself to the bench. He missed pre season under a shady "family needs" pretence, in the quest to find a new club. In doing so, he gave Ten Hag all the more power to use him as he's more valuable atm - an impact player you bring on to score in the last 15/20 minutes. It's a shame Keane has such double standards for his friends and himself (Ireland 2002, United fall out).

Simple... He lost a son, had a daughter hospitalized, his wife depressed (most likely him as well), asked for time with his family and the direction doubted him. Everyone's thoughts keep glossing over this reality... Including this panel of non bias pundits. Lack of respect at all levels... I don't even have to mention the credit that the best scorer ever should have received.

Ronaldo announced that he wanted to leave MUFC in the summer; whether it be because he wanted to play for a club qualified for CL or for other reasons, it doesn't matter. He missed pre-season, and has caused problems for the club since. Erik ten Hag was employed to turn the team around and make them competitive, to install a new way of playing and changing [improving] the squad's mentality. Ten Hag was not employed to manage Ronaldo's last season of his contract but to mould the team into his vision. Ten Hag's focus isn't on one player, it is on the team. If Ronaldo starts a game, is benched, or is asked to come on at whatever time during a match, that is a decision that Erik ten Hag was employed to make, and one he will make with the team's performance, not based on the wishes of one single player. Keep it real.

Yeah Ronaldo is the only one to blame for the situation he’s in. If he reported to pre season he would’ve had time to work with ten hag and build his fitness up. But because he wants to be a cry baby he basically went awol and has CLEARLY loss a lot of his overall game so much that it’s really sad to see, he just looks so much slower and predictable in his movements.

Doing a good job got smashed 6-3 by City a few weeks ago beat a Liverpool team in transition with a glut of injuries, a terrible spurs team. Won't win amything.

Yep. He created all that hassle pre season by declaring he wanted to leave. Slagging off united and their direction/ambition. He made it very clear he didn't want to be there. As a result ETH has decided that he doesn't want someone who doesn't want to be there, someone with a bad attitude and he doesn't deserve to play. He's spot on. In a nutshell. Imaginary pre-season conversation between Ten Hag and Ronaldo only happened in Souness` head. Ronny wasn`t in Manchester pre-season. But sadly for all concerned, nobody else wanted him. Ten Hag wanted an applied Ronaldo, not the two year old strop.

I doubt Ten Hag wanted to keep him but had too because they're short on strikers, ETH hasn't taken the job to be undermined by the hierarchy. Martial is injury prone, Rashford is poor & can't play every game & Greenwood is all but gone. It doesn't make footballing sense to let ronaldo leave without a replacement.

Liverpool fan here, not keen on Souness, however I agree with him. Regardless how Souness managed a team, his advice now is on point.

Yes, of course Ronaldo should not have walked off, but Ten Hag should have avoided the situation by (as Ferguson always did) proper communication before the matches. This was not the first time Ronaldo has been disrespected. A good coach should not spring surprises. Both Ronaldo and Ten Hag need to learn from this. I agree with the comments of Keane, Ferdinand and Kevin Petersen.
