Joni Mitchell performs in public for first time in nine years
Joni Mitchell surprised the Newport Folk Festival crowd when she joined Brandi Carlile onstage for her first public performance in nine years. Anthony Mason spoke with Mitchell about recovering from a near-fatal brain aneurysm, teaching herself to play the guitar again and making her return to the stage.

In my opinion, Joni should get the Nobel Prize for Literature. She's every bit as deserving as Bob Dylan. Her music and poetry is staggering.

So many people don't like the tone of her voice now. Her years of smoking took its toll on her vocal cords but personally, I love the tone of her voice now, better than when she was younger. When you listen to the lyrics of "Both Sides Now" & compare her original version to today's version you realize that it was written by a young person who hadn't experienced life fully & now, that same person has, & she was able to make it through to the other side. What a beautiful life journey, & she shared it with us.

@@dee_dee_place So do you think people even compare Bob Dylan's voice now to what it was when he was in his twenties? Nope. It's an inappropriate judgement of a woman that makes me disappointed in people who pull that crap. Cher's voice has changed as she's gotten older. Bonnie Raitt's voice is different, if you compare it from when she was in her twenties. Dionne Warwick's voice is different but it's still a beautiful voice. It's the QUALITY OF THE DELIVERY that matters.

To see her pick up that guitar again...yeah, instant tears, and that was after the instant tears from hearing her sing again. Seriously, one of the most surprising and blessed musical moments of my life, the good kind. All sort of people on that stage tearing up too, including Brandi. She made this happen, such a hero!!

Wow! This is wonderful! And the fact that she played her guitar again! People who are not guitar players probably don't realize what an incredible guitarist she is. The average person thinks that heavy metal shredders are great players, and many of them have great technique. But Joni belongs to a special pantheon of players that play the instrument in their own unique way. No one else plays like she does. In a world where everything seems so terrible these days seeing Joni playing and singing in front of a live audience is the best thing I have seen in a very long time.

Always had a good feeling about Brandi, glad to see I was right
I was born during WW2. I grew up with folk music in the 50's and 60's. Joni Mitchel and her music has been a part of my life since she began her career. I was privileged to be at this closing night concert and see this performance. I will carry this memory to my grave !! Thank you Joni Mitchell for so many years of beautiful music and so many fond memories!! And to Brandi Carlile, a very special thanks for helping this wonderful brave treasure to grace us with her music again!!
Joni's music has meant a lot to me. I listened to her LPs all thru my high school and college years. Thank you, Brandi, for showing her the respect, care, admiration, and love she deserves. This was an historic moment. Obviously.
Here in the UK - we are awed by Joni's courage and willpower. Her strength, and the beauty of the songs. And that voice !!! Dare we hope for Glastonbury '23 ?
I know multitudes across the globe love Joni, but it still seems she never has received the recognition she’s due. Joni’s fighting, restless spirit drove her to keep pushing the envelope and exploring new ways to express herself. Many didn’t like her evolution beyond folk music-just as many criticized her friend Bob Dylan-but I am so grateful that her Hejira took her through folk, pop, rock, jazz, and even classical. And she’s an accomplished visual artist to boot. Love you Joni!
Joni is the sound track of my childhood in the 70s. As a New Englander, I'm grateful we showed her the love she deserves.
Can't stop crying. Joni has been my musical idol since 1969!💕💕💕

Joni is a legend, I love her so much. She rescued me when i was depressed in 2015, her words, her music brought me comfort that I needed so much and helped me get through one of the worst times in my life. She's so under appreciated and it's so lovely to see her being recognized. Sure she is celebrated but you don't hear people talk about Joni like they do Dylan, even though in my opinion Joni is far better. Seeing her play again... tears to my eyes. I wish I could hug her and tell her how much she means to me. Love you always and forever, Joni.

Even tv viewers have tears in their eyes. Thank you Joni! ♥️
As a human race, to see the healing quality of music with a person like Joni Mitchell is like we're watching an inexplicable miracle before our own eyes. As a musician myself, I also can't forget to mention Paul Simon here: I'm always in awe of his ability to hold a crowd with incredibly intimate-sounding music, totally exposed to any tiny mistake in either playing or singing (which doesn't seem to make him nervous at all!), with the crowds of people listening intently, it's a literal sound of silence in the crowd. Wow! On the flip side, for my fellow musicians out here on KZread -- see that musical background in the CBS studio? Talk about failing a music theory exam...LOL
Those songs, during these times, still serving a purpose to move people to tears, to joy and action...Thank You, Joni. Here we go again, battling oppression by an over zealous, misguided, yet powerful (McNamara/Schlafly like) MINORITY.
