12/30/22 @ 10:30 AM: I first experienced this song as a young boy in the sixties. The first version was sung by a youthful Judy Collins. I had yet to hear the songwriter’s version. Having heard the story behind the lyrics from Joni at a concert at a concert in the early seventies, added many layers with more than a little gravitas and emotion. I’m a nutshell, Joni Mitchell is a treasure!

My wife died on the 14th the day before our 52 wedding anniversary after a battle with cancer. We both loved Joni Mitchell, her music was the sound track to our first years of married life. I mourn my wife but this has taken me back to those first days when all that mattered was loving each other and dreaming of the future. Joni, thank you for bringing back those memories.

So amazing...at about 3:49 you can hear Brandi Carllile whisper "tears and fears" to Joni, who had clearly lost her place in the song. And then Brandi steps in and brings it back around on track, so that Joni can finish out the song so stunningly. Planned or just magical musicians supporting Joni, it matters not. It is an exceptional, beautiful moment in the entire beautiful moment of this recording! Props! Stunning!

To everyone saying that she’s lost it, she shouldn’t be there: how much guts does it take for a 79-year-old Joni Mitchell to get up on stage, knowing that she’ll be compared to her 25-year-old self? That’s what performing is about: showing up and making it work with everything you’ve got. Who cares if her voice isn’t perfect? Her heart is.

It was at this festival in 1966 that Judy Collins introduced Joni Mitchell to her audience. Collins was the first to cover and record Both Sides Now and made Mitchell's song a huge hit. To me, what makes this song and Mitchell so iconic was that she had as a 23 year old the ability to write with such profound insight what for most us is only gained over many years and realized by 79 year olds, like her .... now. I first heard her sing it as a 25 year old. I marveled at its insights then and as a 79 year oldster in a few weeks ... still.

Thank you to Brandi Carlisle for having the idea of doing this after she had been a part of the Joni Jam sessions. What I found especially moving about this was Wynonna Judd wiping tears away as she sang backing vocals. I read an interview with her yesterday and she said how special it had been to be asked to be part of this. She mentioned that she sang this song at her 8th grade graduation and how it reminded her of her mom. Very touching.

I appreciate older performers who are still singing in their 80s-- they have a gravitas as well as a presence that younger folks don't have/haven't earned yet... and they connect us with the past in an important way, harkening back to some of our most poignant memories-- like a postcard from the past in our present moment.

So glad I found this video. This song helped through first heartbreak, this stupid girl crying over an idiot boy! Now, am 72 yrs old, married 50 years to a wonderful man who never gave me a reason to shed tears. Thank you Ms Joni for telling us to "look at life from both sides". I still cry listening to this song but appreciate our good fortune for having you in our generation.

Hey. They played together in private. By the sounds of it with Paul McCartney and Elton John etc. but your tears are valid. I had mine too. Our world reduces everything to content. Fleeting entertaining rubbish. This was “something.” A display of human spirit. It took me by total surprise. I had no reason to hope Joni would see a stage again. Who did? You, me and everyone who was moved. Just experienced what the power of music really is. We are united.

The word bookends comes to mind when viewing this. Joni in her youth sang this song with the question of life before her. Now she sings like a grandmother sitting in her chair telling her children and grandchildren of her life. This is incredibly intimate and hopefully all the youth in the audience stop and realize what they just experienced. As a guy watching on youtube, I was touched.

Thank-you Joni, Brandi and everyone who made this happen. Sending Joni even more healing prayers for even more returns to full health. I grew up listening to the magic of my Dad's records from the 60s and 70s and it doesn't need to be said, Joni is still the goddess of all, no matter the generation. x Love you Joni.

Somehow listening to this deep and wise voice version, after a more naive and sweet pitch... is so outstandingly marvelous. It's like a full circle moment as if in the end everything in life made sense. Amazing and beautiful! And Joni's stage presence is such a delight, that's what's called aging with grace! I love Joni, what a privilege being in that crowd.

Storytime/Memory Time!! *A Single Father, His Daughter and Only Child, and Joni Mitchell:* Fortunately, I could take my Single Father of this only child/daughter to see Joni Mitchell (My Father's first time) when she released her Both Sides Now album and went on tour in 2000 for his 47th birthday. It was one of the best experiences we ever had. _Had I known _*_my Father would be dead SIX YEARS LATER_* (Two days before his 53rd birthday.) _I would have taken him to every bucket list concert he had._ However, I want to kick brandie carlyle in the mouth. Paul Simon performed at this festival. When everyone thought that they just witnessed something special, that feeling was short lived until Joni came on. She sang this song with so much hope, but the way she sings it now adds another chapter to the meaning of Both Sides, Now. This is her swan song and may be the best performance. She is certainly conveying the pain and hopefulness that she experienced throughout her life. I’m lucky enough to be alive with this legend
