Yeah that's the most bizarre thing about the whole situation. We can all understand the motivation of Jones, Aspinall, and Stipe here even if we don't agree with some of it. But it's a real head scratcher as to why the UFC is so stubborn in wanting to put together a fight that's unlikely to sell that much better than Jones-Aspinall even though this will castrate their heavyweight division for years to come.

In this situation who should he be caring about right now other than himself?

Just the idea of an interim champion having to DEFEND their belt instead of immediately fighting the champ is downright ridiculous. Dana shoul've called up Jon the second he was out for more than 6 months and asked him to vacate the title. Have Tom fight Stipe for the belt sometime in February/March, and the winner fights Jon Jones when he returns. Would've saved the HW division.

I would take Sergei not getting the title shot first if it meant the division didn’t have to be stuck because of a crybaby champion not willing to give up his belt. They could’ve setup Sergei to fight the winner of Tom or Stipe while waiting for Jones’ return. Would’ve been a great title defense for the champ.

I think Jones waiting for the Stipe fight is fine but he should give up the belt if he doesn't want to fight Aspinall first

Exactly. I don’t like Jones at all, and don’t think he’d survive with Tom or Francis (neither does he himself, let’s be honest, otherwise why wouldn’t he fight them?!), but he’s not the one to criticise here. The UFC is. Jones is free to say he’ll fight whoever he wants whenever he wants, but the UFC need to say: not for the belt you ain’t. The champ is the only guy in the division who doesn’t get to dictate anything. All champs should only ever be matched up with the best, most deserving, most relevant threat to dethrone him.

Mate, Jon is injured & can't fight. Tom can fight but won't fight. The UFC created this mess, they gave Stipe the title shot & they put up the trinket at MSG for posters & to sell PPVs, the same trinket that's now confusing Tom & some fans. But why should Stipe lose the title fight he already has when it wasn't his fault it was cancelled & postponed? At the end of the day, it's the UFC's call, not Jones', Stipe or Tom.

It is imaginary lol. The UFC won’t even let him unify before putting on Stipe vs Jon. Tom should have knew better than to take that fight. Jon was injured but they pulled Stipe out? 😂😂 Everyone has made it very apparent that Tom should fight Jon or Stipe. So it’s time to wait it out that title shot or for whoever he will fight to unify that belt in case they retire. People want to Jon tested but forget how he got the belt. Gane is there available. Hell, even Blaydes vs Pavlovich was more of a title fight than Gane vs Jones. Jones is now sitting on his Mickey Mouse belt holding up the division. I think Ngannou is a big factor in all of this. He is rising as one of the biggest stars in combat sports after being ufc heavyweight champ, going over to boxing and knocking down fury. Dana wants to push the narrative that he was ducking Jones and that the ufc still has the best heavyweight (and mma goat) in Jon jones. That’s why the Stipe fight is important, to give Jones an opportunity to get Stipe out faster than Ngannou. Winning to Aspinal does nothing. Losing to Aspinal does so much worse. Jones fighting Ngannou and losing will destroy the narrative they are trying to push. Oh well, I guess it is what it is

It will hurt Jones legacy. Why?!? Because everyone right NOW is saying hes ducking aspinall for a washed stipe, that just doesn't go away. An old example I can think of is Marciano vs Louis, that fight happened 70 YEARS AGO and everyone knew before the fight louis wasn't the same fighter he used to be, and even know 70 years later people STILL say louis was washed in that fight. Jones fighting stipe only would look good for the casuals who barley watch the ufc and resume skim fighters, which may be what he wants but for people who actually watch the sport they will know the true story.

There is politics at play for some reason the UFC want to keep Jones happy with this one and give him the easier unlogical fight, look at any Dana interview how fast he shuts it down, there is something going on behind the curtain

Generally agree, but while it would not mean much to a casual fan, a win against Aspinall would mean a lot to the diehards. This is truly the new breed and not just a striker like Gane either, if he beats him then he has truly ruled across two divisions over at least three eras. That would be magnificent. This is the age old argument that fans will not let a man retire on top. If khabib is allowed to leave on his terms, we can do the same for Jon. It’s always hard for the next Gen to begin without that belt, but it is what it is. Your argument for someone being allowed to say they “beat the goat” is also flawed because it would just result in people coming out to say “he was never that good.” Hence, you saying adesanya sucks. You saying beneil is overrated. You saying Charles was going to be dominated, etc.

I don’t know if Jones should retire but he should definitely vacate the belt.

The UFC won't let Aspinall fight Jones. If he beats Aspinall and then retires Aspinall's stock will never be the same. It'll just make the HW division look bad. Jones and Stipe at least will make decent money, and then the HW division will continue to move on without the chance of harming the stock of a future star.

The greatest, imo, "bar room bouncer" and probably UFC/Pride champion of all times is 'El Guapo", Bas Rutten. Those Hercules Industrial strength Jack Hammer liver shots Bas Rutten delivered in his days in Japanese Pride fights will reverberate through the ages. The power of those liver leg kicks were just devastating. Combined with Bas' "laugning lion" fighting spirit and pouncing ability, the barroom bouncer from Holland will always be for me the leading edge and "bitcoin standard" of UFC fighting mastery.

I agree with the sentiment but this is major cope. Jon not fighting aspinall, who’s pretty irrelevant outside of fans like us, won’t tarnish his record and the UFC cares more about Jones’ legacy than aspinall’s.

Jon’s UFC’s 2nd biggest star and always fought the toughest guys in his come up I think he deserves to choose his next fight if it’s to be his last. People calling him scared are crazy too just wanna see him lose Jon was willing to fight whoever for that vacant title and there were a lot of people that had Gane winning and when he won it was all of a sudden like of course he won. It’s been the same thing his whole career with “this is the guy to beat Jones” if he were to beat Tom people would just go to the next contender and say the same thing they’ve been saying his whole career “This is the guy to beat Jones”

To say Stipe isn’t a top contender because he’s old is crazy Stipe still beats guys in the top 5 today! Like I said before Jones beat Gane when everyone was literally hyping up Gane about how he’s the new generation of heavyweight and Gane went 5 Full rounds with Francis and there’s plenty people that thought he won. I think that Stipe would beat Gane so I don’t see how Stipe is not a top contender there’s a good chance he beats Jones I know for sure he’ll put up a better fight than Gane and he was literally #1 at the time. The disrespect to Stipe is crazy you would think he’s fighting Derrick Lewis the way everyone’s just disregarding him.

Youre right, waiting this long only for Stipe is embarassing. The champ should fight anyone, even though Stipe is the HW GOAT, everybody geos past their prime, including Stipe. Stipe will be way too old by the time they fight. The champ should fight fresh fighters like Aspinall, the new threat right now.

UFC should never have given Tom or Sergei an interim title just so they would take a short turn around fight. I dont want to see Aspinal vs Jones. Aspinal needs to fight some actual names before he gets to fight a legend like Jones.

If the UFC hadn't been so anxious to sell Stipe as the HW GOAT this wouldn't be an issue. His resume' is a bunch of past prime fighters who would have dusted him in their primes. Does anyone honestly believe that Stipe beats a prime DC, Cain, JDS (already lost), Overeem, or Fedor? I would bet against him vs a prime Werdum.

Regardless there’s still going to be interest in jones vs stipe. People are going to want to tune into Jones’ last fight because it’ll be like watching Tom Brady or MJs last game. Kobe was washed his last season yet every arena was sold out that he played in
