Fedor (who in my opinion is the heavyweight GOAT) fought killers, but he was also fed a lot of cans which certainly padded his record and extended his career. That said, he's definitely ducking Tom so he can fight a washed up firefighter who hasn't won a fight since 2019 so he can boast that he beat the "GOAT". He's looking for a name, not a fight.

I just hate how resume and legacy are controlling heavyweight right now, Stipe of all people could make this situation so easy, look at lightweight, Gaethje willing to fight Fiziev and Porier willing to fight down the rankings against Saint Denis. Established lightweights who could sit around and weight for another top 5 fight or a title shot, but are instead taking on the next challenge. I love Stipe, but he's been sitting on the sidelines for years now and should just fight Aspinall especially if Jones isnt gonna be fighting til the end of this year or even possibly next year.

Stipe should in no way get a shot at that title. The last time he had it he went to sleep. He sits out for three years and gets another shot? Jones also had no fights at Heavyweight and automatically got a title shot (a vacant belt at that). Sometimes the UFC utilizes the ranking system like it should but other times just completely ignores it.

In fact Jones only has 2 minutes of fight time over the last 4 years. Thats also all we have ever seen from him at heavyweight. In that same time Tom had 7 wins and got 6 times performance of the night plus the knee injury loss. All those fights also ended early to be fair but still its a joke for Jon to claim Tom doesnt deserve that fight when he wasnt active for nearly half a decade and suddenly calls himself the heavyweight champion.

can we also recall that Jon won his 'HW championship' fighting for a vacated title with a guy who lost to the real champion (Francis). His HW belt is no more real than Tom's. Less so in my mind since Sergei would flatline Gane in a heartbeat. Let's also note that Jon is holding up an entire division for, probably a year by the time he recovers and gets to fighting old man Stipe. And so telling Tom to "write his own legacy" is actually being directly prevented by him. Jon needs to vacate; then he can fight a geriatric Stipe whenever he wants.

then have Tom defend his fake belt. Jones isn’t ducking anyone. He’s literally fought the best of the best since his early 20s. There will always be a new guy, if he retired before Gustavson people would’ve said he was scared. If he retired before fighting, DC, same thing. There’s always going to be a new guy. It is never going to be an easy time to retire.

the interim belt sets tom up to be next in line for a title shot, its fair to have him wait because stipe vs jon is a fight tons of people want and it was set in stone before tom won the interim belt. however whoever wins in stipe vs jon should have to go against however has the interim belt at the time so the division doesn't have 2 defending champs because as it stands tom is gonna have to defend his interim belt or be inactive for over a year

Cheal, I think that Tom, claiming to be the active champ, should book a fight immediately. Every guy he takes out gives him the ability to deliver an epic Cheal Sonnen esk callout. To me that is much more potent than social media callouts. Tom says he is going to be the best of all time, why not take out a couple guys next in line first, he would eventually have to fight them anyway. He would also be building the unification fight making himself and the UFC more money. Post fight callouts give little room for effective rebuttals which will make the unification bout more likely due to the egos involved.
