Only for him to call out a fighter that isn't the 1st contender two days later to fight in June. And what I meant with my first comment was that, out of the three people (Islam, Oliveira and Dana) involved in the rematch, only one isn't interested. And that's Makhachev.

I love my Muslim brothers Khabib and Islam and I wish them all the success but to be honest I dont think Islam has done enough at 55 to be able to go up to 70 and get double champ status. I think he has to go through Gathje and Arman and then he could leave the class with a legitimate record. This should also apply to any fighter that wants to go to another class. Look at leon he already wants to go up and their are at least another 3-4 people that deserve a crack at the tittle. Thats my two cents.

Chael is usually right on the money, but have to disagree with him here. If you don't think the best promoter in sports history didn't throw the house at Khabib, that's kind of stupid. Dana most definitely would have given Khabib anything that he wanted, it was more about his Dad's passing. If Khabib said move up and fight for the belt, Dana would have printed the contract then and there while tripping over his own feet.

Im glad someone in the UFC analyst space is actually giving Charles grief for that papercut. He didn't want to lose again and was just biding his time for Islam to move to 170 so he wouldn't have to face him. I know people in real life who believe the official story that Charles wanted to push through but the UFC doctors stopped him. That stunt should have put Charles in the naughty corner of 155 and really should cost him significant ranking. There is a part of me that wants to see the UFC force Charles v Islam asap. But not because he deserves the title shot. If only because I wanna see him get beat up or pull out again. Maybe then people will get wise to his pathetic tricks.

Yes, absolutely! He needs to move up to 170. He cuts so much weight to make 155, and that becomes tougher as he ages. Plus, he has always maintained he'd like to get a second title. Islam vs leon is a good one. if he can get past Leon, then maybe we can get Islam vs Shavkat. I don't see Islam fighting more than 3-4 before he retires. I want him to fight those guys on double digit win streaks! He ended Charles' and Volks'. Lets see if he can with Leon.

I remember an interview a while back where he and Khabib were laying out their plan of 6 fights before retirement. And that was 2 fights ago. Those dagestanis tend to stick with plans. We'll see. I think that was more Khabib than Islam. It's possible that Islam could continue to fight unless there's an up and comer 'brother' in their gym who is competing in the same division. At that point, he may choose to step aside.

UFC seems to be in a rut with the rematches. It is almost to the point if you are at the top you have to beat someone twice to move on.

i mean the divison is in such a weird place, the only promising guys in the top ranks were arman,oliveira and beneil, beneil screwed his chance by getting injured. oliveira already pulled out of the fight but islam already beat him in a dominant fashion. arman is a good contender but islam has already beaten him too, by the time islam beats these guys again people are gonna complain "oh most of his title defences are against the same guys" i think islam can fight justin and poirier and then move up, there really isnt anoyne else in the divison .. rematches really doesnt add anything to the legacy. if u beat the guy again people will be like "oh soo what he already had beat him once before" if he loses the rematch "oh wow he got exposed, he was lucky in the first fight insert excuses idk" ..

Hope he does, imagine a world where we had more than 1-2 championship fights a year in one of the best divisions.

In my understanding, Islam wants to defend both titles. So WW and LW don’t necessarily exclude each other.

Yes, Chael. UFC should keep Islam happy with his matches. The champ want new blood and he actually wants to challenge himself. 170 is just as good as 155. He is not speaking about moving up because he is threatened by guys on his division or the higher divisions has beatable champion or less stacked div. He's already beaten the guy who's beaten the top rank, and Islam has beaten the guys bellow. And although MMA math doesn't work, Islam is a nightmare matchup with all the guys at 155. Going up to 170 is definitely a challenge considering the guys there are really big and tall. It's where Islam has the disadvantage and it's where he sees the challenge. Rematches slow down a division and derail the trajectories of rising contenders. Look what happened to Dariush and Volk may also never be the same. 2 defenses is not enough and really no one should be getting an instant rematch for an uncontroversial win. When there's a clearly a most deserving next challenger, it should go to him.

With one more win, Makhachev will actually have "most" title defenses in 155 in history. I have no idea where people are coming from saying he hasn't done enough, he's tied with the goats of the division. I think just to put his stamp on it, he should have 2 more defenses. I do think he can defend 2 belts too if he really wanted. But then you limit title fights for 2 divisions.

Sure but if he fights Charles again, his 4 title fights will only be against 2 different opponents. Fantastic opponents no doubt, but to clear out a division you actually have to fight the rest of the top ranked guys in your division. Say what you will about Izzy, but he beat Gastelum (#4), Rob (champ), Romero (#3), and Costa (#2) before he even attempted to get a second title. You can’t hold up a division unless there’s no longer any interesting matchups in your division

Islam has some work to do in his own division. Alex had to beat max 3 times and defend his belt against Ortega and zombie before he got his superfight. I’d say if Islam convincingly beats Justin, he could have the pass to move up to WW if Leon is still holding the belt. I honestly think that the current lineup of WW’s would make him look average. There is a reason he is so dominant at a smaller weight class.

Volkanovski would be favored to beat just about any LW not named Islam - at least before the recent career-altering headkick KO. The % weight difference between LW and FW is the least of any 2 weight classes. And Volk is the biggest FW on the roster. But Islam haters will always find a way to hate.

UFC needs to put Tsarukyan against Poirier or Oliveira to build his name enough to sell a PPV w/Islam. And Islam can defend against Gaethje while waiting. If Islam wins both of those he’d break the LW title defense record and then bump to 170.

There are a lot of guys he'd need to fight to clear out the division. He's got great wins - Charles Olivera, Arman Tsrukyan and then lesser so Dan Hooker, Bobby Green, Thaigo Moises.Volk was a super fight that he should always have won due to size, he passed that test, but its not cleaning out the division. Whether or not we'd all agree that he WOULD win , he hasn't fought the other top dogs - Gaethje , Porier, Chandler, Gamrot, even St. Denis. Not sure when a few wins as champion, literally no defenses against lightweights counts as clearing out. Khabib was closer, but doesn't hold a candle to GSP, Anderson or Jones.

I understand when people say they don't want to see Islam vs Charles again, however that's what they're most likely getting if Arman loses in April... and Justin fighting Islam makes zero sense, plus there's about one digit of a chance with Justin winning that fight XD

Islam wants 170 for a couple reasons but 1 is definitely the bellator 155 champ who will soon be in the ufc then the Dagestan Will have champs with, umar, usman and Islam , 3 weight classes all dagi champs I think that is the teams plans as they will never fight each other

Not that I want him to retire, but it would kind of fix a lot of match making problems that the UFC has in the short term.

Absolute left field take here but Beneil takes Islam. I think Khabib recognized that a while ago hence why he put so much respect on him. Beneil is too slow for quick strikers though.

islam vs porier? that guy just got sent to the moon and has way too many shots at the title. he needs to fight some fresh 155 contenders before moving to 170. not people like porier. even justin isn’t that of an impressive of a win when he’s lost to khabib and charles already.

But there are so many fights i want to see from him at 155. From gaethje and poirier and Armen to mcgregor and fuck even fiziev.

The real fight that would draw $ would be Khabib coming back to fight Islam… shit would be insane and who knows who would win that fight.

The issue is that Islam essentially took over for Khabib and has proven to be a such a worthy successor that we act as though there’s no reason for him to fight anyone Khabib beat. Khabib/Islam combined have more or less cleaned it out. Why aren’t we calling for the Gaethje fight? Cause of Khabib.

He has a lot more to prove

Silly take... cleaned out with Gaethje and Poirier still there, and Gaethje game for his chance if not Dustin... and Arman Tsarukyan chomping at the bit. Khabib is an outlier because his mom/dad... Makhachev just hates the weight cut.

Everyone goes on about Islam being some sort of great but his best wins was Oliveira and one over Volk. Beyond that his resume is pretty thin at 155, christ he hasnt even defended the belt against a natural 155er. He doesnt get any grace, he isnt an Izzy or Khabib or even volk who were lapping their divisons. There are a few defences id like to see before he goes up.

When you cut too much weight to gain advantage over smaller size fighters you can’t have long reign in that weight class. Davison Figueiredo, Alex Pareira, Khabib are a few examples.

I think Charles Olivera is next unless Olivera doesn’t want to.

Islam is not on Khabib's level yet in the matter of notoriety and dominance. Let's not forget Volkanovsky came up a weight class (that counts for something) and "Da Bronx" didn't get his rematch...

I disagree. A rematch only means that you didn't do a good job on the first occasion, it was really close so you gotta prove yourself again. Khabib never had a close match, he dominated everyone

That's why Islam agreed to fight Volk again and from what I heared Islam choose Volk as a replacement as well. With all the other guys UFC is offering to rematch with Islam, he dominated the fight.

well justin is a better fighter now than what he was when he fought khabib, mcgregor was away from the sport because of floyd , dustin is probably the only good defense he got . not mentioning his rise to a title cuz he did defeat many tough opponents. i just think islam is fighting better guys

Have to disagree about Khabib. Khabib would've lost to prime Usman which would've destroyed his legacy. Islam is a much more fierce competitor and really is willing to take on anyone. I do agree that if he doesn't lose in LW he'll be in WW within 3-4 fights.

Agree that Islam and Khabib are pretty equal, but I think Khabib was more feared by his opponents and he commanded more respect.
