It’s crazy to think we are getting a movie that’s gonna lean heavily on the effects of mental illness, we often NEVER see this for comic book villains, and yes, this isn’t gonna be a comic book movie, but I feel like it’s gonna be a masterpiece, and I think Joker/Phoenix is gonna be beat down so bad we will all be on his side by the end of the movie

Fuck this depressed me so much. After my suicide attempt I tried to do everything by the book. Got into treatment, told friends (discreetly... told that I was really down, I didn't want to worry anyone), tried to reach out, tried to do everything right. I tried so hard. Tried to get my life in order, tried to make plans for future. I really tried. I'm not doing any better. I was told I could talk to people but it became very clear that people don't actually want to hear you. They just say that out of courtesy. "Out there, they don't give a shit about people like you. They don't give a shit about people like me, either." Somehow this movie was really liberating. Why should I care to make myself happy for other people, and stress because I just can't feel that?

Its 2023 and I still can't get over this movie. The moments, the music, the dialogues... One of the best movies of the decade.

If you said Joker 2 would be a musical that has Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn during the release of this movie, I would've told you that you were insane just like Arthur.

I remember the day this movie was released. The only movie in my life which i have watched twice in the cinema but still couldnt get enough of it. In my country "Pakistan" alot of people called it slow, boring and hard to understand but i cant comprehend in words what joy i felt after watching this movie. I was the only guy in the cinema hall who cheered when Arthur danced after killing those three guys, who felt bad when arthur was in pain and who felt relieved and clapped in the last scenes when Arthur was standing on the top of the car, accepting his destiny. That day i came home and my wife saw a very different side of me, because she couldnt understand why i was so connected to the movie...i cried and cried and cried that day because all that was in my past came back crashing in my mind...i was bullied all childhood and teenage. I never knew why being innocent and not hurting anyone was taken as symbol of weakness... this movie took out my vulnerabilities and washed them away which i had controlled over the years. Thank you Joaquin and Todd for bringing this gem to the world.

Nah, how long have you been an adult for? People are more accepting of people with depression ever in history. If anything we're too accepting because what some people call depression is just having a really really shit day. Depression is nul of feeling, the absolute loss of all emotion. If you want a good example of depression watch One Punch Man, I know it's cartoon and many would think it's for kids, but they have a very good example of depression and never need to tell you it. That is REAL depression.

Okay so I know this is a bit late, but I was rewatching this movie and that first scene with Arthur making the kid laugh on the bus always confused me because I never understood why that mother had a go at him, until I realised that because this whole movie is run through Arthur's subjective point of view that he was actually making that kid cry but he just perceived it as laughter. God this movie is so good and will be watched for many, many years to come.

The best part is that so many people refuse to look at it from that point of view. They'll either use scapegoats like muh mental illness, muh medications - or they'll attempt to inject ideology into it and blame muh evil capitalist system or some other BS. The first group are cowards who refuse to look at reality for what it is, and the second group are ideologues who want more control over society. The ironic thing is that neither of them actually care about Arthur himself. They're just pretending to.

Joaquin's ability to carry the character by his expressions and tone of body are what make him such a great actor. In the first trailer the saddened sluggish motion to his walk shows the depressed broken man but now in the suit he walks tall with swagger. God I can't wait for this movie.

I like the difference between each of their Jokers. Ledger's Joker was a true insane, sadistic lunatic but still very intelligent while Phoenix's Joker is much more human and realistic. Just as sadistic, but more controlled and reigned in.

What you said is right. But unlike thanos, joker is one of the most popular and iconic villains ever mostly because of the dark knight. Thanos didn't have that level of popularity so they had to hype him up. So that is not a good comparison

Nicholson, coke and 60s joker was LSD. not sure what drug phoenix is channelling here, but im thinking something in the off his anti-psychotic meds self medicating area. Not to mean the actors were on drugs, just that if you think about it, their portrayals exemplified the results of oversuse of those drugs.

Just go see the movie and enjoy it, and yes in doing so you will help him possibly win an oscar, but if u know anything about him and his relationship to his brother, which i don't myslef personally, but i think one can see clearly, that he(joaquin) probobaly didn't do this movie in the hopes of claiming some academy award or "oscar" or whatever.

You know when he caught my eye was when he said in an interview that he felt Heath's presence with him throughout the making of this film. They were good friends and, i thought that was awesome and after watching the trailers, with a totally different take on The Joker, I think he's gonna SMASH this performance and win the Oscar.
