There’s more than I can go into in a comment, but one of the worst was Leigha being told to put a maxi pad on when she started bleeding through her belly button so she didn’t get blood on her costume, just a few days before she had to have spinal surgery. She was also made to comeback and film a music video (disco believer) just a few weeks after that same surgery. The kids have also not been paid for any of the social media content they’ve made, as well as not receiving fair percentages/what they were told they’d receive for other jobs.

I disagree with the take : "struggle of getting our voices heard at all". Being a famous artist, especially an entertainer, was one of the ONLY ways to not get wrecked if people found out you were gay (at least in the older Western world). It's one of the only spaces/areas where those voices could be heard and had an impact on the greater society (especially in France). But I do agree that the comment was ignorant.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Jojo doesn't really have her own personality. Like what you addressed in this video is so spot on. She's been marketed and presented as a commodity for little girls her whole life, so now that she's trying to be "edgy" it doesn't come off as genuine at all! She's going through the motions of what she and her team thinks a "child/teen star" should be doing; she's trying to give Miley, Lindsay, Britney, Selena... But all it's really giving is the same fake sparkly Jojo just with a black-and-white filter on it. She's never been herself one day in her life! If she came out with something that was really stripped back, wearing less makeup and rhinestones, and going with some acoustic/folk sound I think that would've been received better. It would actually be the opposite of what she's been putting out.

Problem is she still cant sing. I don't think you can make acoustic sound authentic with auto tune which is very present in Jojo's songs so pop make sense for her. Even the teaser of her new song (lover/fighter song?) you can clearly tell the original singers voice is most heard especially in the chorus. The blending of the og singer demos with the actual song seems to be a trend in the music industry if you look into it so I absolutely believe that's what happened with her new song.

I was in high school at the time and I remember people comparing Miley to Britney Spears when she shaved her head. Everyone thought she was going off the deep end. You're right she probably does love the attention but you can tell with this rebrand its an attempt to be liked and seen as edgy. All her life she was fine with being cringe and marketing to little girls even into her teenhood and obviously her team loved it so from a money making perspective she is doing amazingly however this is a 180 turn from her old cash grabbing empire. The fact that she is trying to claim "gay pop genre" , gassing herself up that she is some revolutionary artist that done the craziest rebrand, using cheesy pop music, showing her sexuality etc it all screams "PLEASE LIKE ME NOW" as she is trying to appeal to an adult fan base, in particular trying to be an icon within the LGBT community by being over the top. At least with her old brand people came to respect the grind and her relevantly unique style, it was camp and funny. She didn't seem to be trying hard to impress other her age like most preteens/teens do and kept true to her style for years so it was a lot more authentic (ironically cause as I said, she was just slapping her face on products and making millions) now she just seems desperate for lack of better words. And obviously that doesn't work with someone like Jojo who is very out of touch with people her own age.

As someone who knows very little of Jojo Siwa, this rebrand strikes me as another failed attempt of trying way too hard. When you're a child star growing into adulthood apparently there's two options: sexy girl who has sex sexually or evil Peter Parker from Spider-Man 3.

I am a full 16 years older than Jojo and I understand that on the internet that makes me a dinosaur. To me all of this comes off as 50% a lack of awareness of past pop moments and 50% a young person who thinks everything they discover is truly new instead of just new to them. As Kayla pointed out, Jojo has never lived in reality.

I’ve blocked, disliked, unrecommended, asked for certain words to not be recommended, pressed the “this post made me uncomfortable 😢” on every post I see about her on instagram and reels, and I KEEP getting videos about her, idk if she’s paid the algorithm or something but it’s making me annoyed, I never comment or watch too long cause I know it effects the algorithm but I can’t help but winder cause I’m gay and into music that the algorithm keeps pushing it

I do the same with certain content, I think the algorithm sees we stay on the posts longer than other posts so they give more, even though we stayed long to block the content

yeah i heard that, especially on tiktok, trying to block or use "not interested/don't show this post" type of buttons is perceived as engagement and that's why you keep getting those recommended posts that you don't want, and the only way to actually keep those away is to scroll as soon as they show up. it's very stupid and annoying but i guess it might be worth a try, since i don't think anyone cares enough to fix that...

Why does nothing ever feel real nowadays? It makes me sound so old but in *just* my 27 years on this planet, society has changed so much. No wonder my Boomer parents are basically checked out as life feels so fake now. In a years time no one will care about this era of JoJo.

To be fair, many of us had this same complaint during the 2000’s super pop era. It’s probably better now with social media allowing a broader spectrum of culture to be showcased.

Tate McCrae CAN sing, VERY well. She got famous on KZread be being an amazing singer. She's also a more than decent writer. I didn't even know all that until I searched her the other day and clicked her old viral videos. The fact she's an incredible dancer just makes her a prodigy. She's not a manufactures music act. She's a true artist.

I feel like they are trying to do something like what Miley did i the 2010s with the tongue -out, pot-smoking, rebel girl attitude. But in JoJos case it feels way more cringy and weird.

Well, JoJo has no reason to go through something like that. Miley, much like some other A Lost celebrities who started out as child stars, was trying to free herself from being artistically strngled by Disney. JoJo just wants to copy her for no good reason and without going through and struggle that would be necessary for her to understand why and how Miley did what she had to do in order to survive in the industry.

it's not the lack of fluidity in her dancing, it's the lack of Dynamic. It's all one note, all done at 110%, no accents, no nuance, and pause at all for the choreo to breathe

You explained this situation perfectly. I support an artist wanting to reinvent/rebrand for artistic freedom/expression, but this feels similar to the JLo and Justin Timberlake situation this year in some ways They all lack of ability to understand and navigate what the public really want from them at this point in their careers. They're stepping in it either because of what they're saying/doing or not saying/doing re their promotion and projects. And there isn't people on their teams to tell them the truth. What an interesting year for all of this to happen.

This such a good deep dive and you summed up all my thoughts on Jojo, Kayla. Its really sad when you think about it because she is another child star that was exploited by adults (i.e. her mother, Abbey Lee) and was allowed to form inappropriate 'friendships" with adults (Colleen & James). And the brainwashing worked because she defends them still and has her own allegations of cruelty towards young girls. I can't remember but she was on a podcast and said something along the lines of being scared of therapy and as outsider looking in, she certainly could benefit from therapy to unpack the bullying & her chaotic childhood.
