Johnny vs. The Playstation
Ойындар
Every gamer had a console they grew up with, and when I wasn't playing Final Fantasy VI on my SNES, I was trying something new out on the newly-released Playstation 1. From 1996 until 2000, there was no other console or handheld I spent the same amount of time on; the PS1 had everything I needed, and didn't make me hate the fact that I missed out on the Nintendo 64 or Sega Saturn when they were all the rage.

Wow, my Dad did the EXACT SAME to me in 1996, he traded in all of my SNES games and the SNES itself to get me the PS1- without telling me. Its insane how we both had the exact same parental experience, lol. I have so many memories with this system, I was only 6 years old when I got it, for the next Christmas, my uncle bought me Resident Evil, the original. Wow man, that game gave me nightmares, it scared the shit out of my 6-7 year old brain, I'd never been this scared in my life but regardless, I just kept on playing, I continued to torture myself due to intrigue, and thus, my life long obsession with everything horror was born. This is just one memory, its crazy looking back, thinking how much the PS1 molded me into the person I am today... wow.

Johnny: "All i had left is N and O" Me: "NO?"
Crash series , Spyro series, Tomba 2 and Front Mission 3. That was my childhood on ps1. As even if I had more games, those were my personal favourites.
Personally I think Johnny needs more videos like this. Instead of focusing on one game and describing every detail , he should focus on several games and just say his thoughts.
Yes! A Crash Bandicoot marathon! I've been thinking about giving these games a shot, so I'm curious to see what you think of them, John!

Idk why, but this may be my favorite somecallmejohnny video. Not because it's the funniest, but because for some reason it just makes me feel this sort of magical feeling, not nostalgia since I didn't grow up with it, I can't quite explain it. Anyone else feel this way?

My short story with the PlayStation I was a Nintendo girl. We had the N64 (me and my brother)... and THEN my uncle bought a PlayStation. I remember we liked going there because... I don't know. We always felt that our Nintendo 64 was like a toy, and that the PlayStation was so high tech. We used to play a shitty Star Wars game... The Phantom Menace, but to me it's a guilty pleasure. I know it's bad... but I like it, and now own it lol. I didn't actually own a PS myself till like... 2008. Some IDIOT I knew sold me a MINT CONDITION PlayStation that I think he must have used TWICE in his life because to this day I can't believe the condition this machine is in. It looks BRAND NEW, I'm not even exagerating... I'm even scared of using it, so I just play PSOne CD based games on my PS3. His "package" also came with an FF VII copy (again, it's like I bought it yesterday condition wise) a GameBoy, and all for like $30 And I don't feel bad for snatching it away from him >:T He didn't care for what he have. I'll treat this system with love and care. It deserved a better owner... but MAN was I lucky.

@MadMax052
9 жыл бұрын
I'm talking about how every platformer he mentioned is trying to be super Mario 64 and failing, even though super Mario 64 wasn't even the best platformer on N64. Those games you mentioned aren't ripoffs, but they sure haven't aged very well. Besides FF, MGS, and Tomb Raider weren't excusive to playstation. Would I give up Zelda to play Grand Turismo? What a silly question indeed. Excuse me, I must go fillet myself for asking such a silly question :o
Johnny you just made my day. 'in the hunt' is a game I remember playing when I was younger but I thought it was super Nintendo so I wasn't sure if I imagined it or not. I need to find it online, for a decent price now. Thank you!!!
This is an amazing video, even to those without nostalgia. But I love watching these types of video to see what the hype was about, and the good games to get. In my country the N64 was much more popular that I didn´t even knew PS1 existed(everyone owned a N64). Even though I was not exposed to RPGs super young until pokemon, I love them know and enjoy the trip through time. It is similar to how Johnny experienced the N64 later in its life, except mine was much later for me.

A lot of games in my early days as a gamer were rentals. I mean it's sad and all but damn the SNES and PS1 had some of the best games ever, with the PS2 imo somehow managing to outdo both. It had a lack of consistently good platformer series but if you were a fan of action RPGs, it was fucking heaven.

Yeah I know right it's kinda annoying.
The PS1 was my very first console. The intro is just nostalgia to my ears. While I didn't own most of the popular games on the system like Crash Bandicoot, Symphony of the Nights, Final Fantasy VII, and Spyro the Dragon, I still had a blast with the years I owned it. Sadly it didn't last very long, and it's long dead by this point, but it's oh so nostalgic.
Oh how I LOVE the transition of Crash. I was saying like, WHAT ABOUT CRASH BANDICOOT? Then I got my answer at the end. Thank you for all your incredible videos, I will be watching pretty much all of them. You make them with amazing ease and the style I just love. Thank you :D

I would have rather grown up with PS1. It had way more variety in genre and mascots, loads of third party supporters, and some games that are expensive as shit like Klonoa, Tomba, and Suikoden 2, which would have been awesome to buy at retail price. The N64 has much less variety. Very few fighting games or RPGs, literally not a single classic 2D game, and they are relatively cheap, money wise. Even some of the more expensive games don't reach several hundred dollars like a whole bunch of PS1 games do.

@AlluMan96
10 жыл бұрын
Mal Nexus When it comes to "sensible characters", Musashi is not one I'd think of right off the bat. I mean, the game was a success, but when you think of like the faces of Playstation 1, Musashi would not even hit my top 20 choises. Also, I wouldn't say that they were cash cowing all that much with the game. Sure, we got Dante & Raiden as obvious "look everyone, these guys are getting a game soon!" kind of choices, but I doubt that they were really pushing marketing with faces like Parappa, Spike, Toro or Daniel fortesque. I argue that the roster for that game was actually pretty decent. Sure, Nariko has no business being there, 2 Coles is redundant & Big daddy was like the wierdest choice for a guest star, but in terms of everyone else, they fit in pretty good & there was a good balance of classic & modern icons of the Playstation brand.
@AlluMan96
10 жыл бұрын
Mal Nexus Well, I can see your reasoning for hating that game. I never use "cash cowing" as much of a complaint anyway, becuase really, every game is designed to make money in it's purest of intent if it's not just a free game (Unless you are intentionally withdrawing content from the game just to make it DLC, something I'll admit the game is guilty for & I don't like it). I actually liked the combat in the game. I don't know about you, but sometimes, I don't wanna just settle a fight with ring-outs. Sometimes the basic punch/kick combat of Smash bros feels a bit too stale. This game emphesizes the use of just fisticuffs, which I admire. As for Crash & Snake, I have a reason for both: Crash is no longer in easy access to Sony. He belongs to Activision. Activision is especially greedy & might've pushed the devs of battle royale to pay off more than they could burn & just said "fuck it". Why they took priority in Big daddy over Crash is where it begins to be stupid. It could also be that other issues with Activision made them refuse to give the rights altogether. As for Snake, simply put, he was in Brawl already. I much prefer them giving us Raiden for all-stars, because if I'd wanna go for Snake, I'd go to brawl. Even though the obvious Revengance was propably the main force behind the choice, it was a conveniance to not just have 2 Smash bros games with Snake. My biggest issue with All-star battle royale is the lack of additional content. The core gameplay, roster of characters & mechanics around all that are fantastic IMO (and dare I say I prefer the gameplay to playing Brawl in both mechanics & *greatly* better character balance), but none of that can hold me for very long when there's not enough meat around the bones. Less maps than in Smash, absence of alternet tracks, few gameplay modes, if you wanna 1-up Brawl, you need that bonus content (except they did 1-up them on the implimentation of actual alternet costumes).
@AlluMan96
10 жыл бұрын
Mal Nexus About character balance. I get you. It ain't perfect at all (considering shit like Kratos), but to compare to Brawl, at least I don't feel like half of the cast is low to garbage tier. As for the match setup, simply, I didn't mind. I still enjoyed playing matches. Also, about alternet costumes in Brawl.... what alternet costumes? You had classic Wario & a few skins like Mario & Luigi's fire flowers or Samus' suits got conveniant reskins, but I feel that if you're gonna give 1 character on the roster a complete costume exchange, then why only him? Not all characters have potential for that, but for everyone that does, it felt like a missed oppertunity. At this point, I can't find any reason to keep this conversation up. We can shovel this shit all day, but it won't make a differance. We'd be going in circles around this conversation. I liked the game alright, you hated it & at this point we are not gonna change our minds about that.
"I'M FLAMING!... In the manly way..." That always puts a smile on my face.
Damn, that start up sound gave me the shivers and a big smile on my face. I miss my old PlayStation ;;
DID SOMEONE SAY GEX!?
Lol, you can turn Gex's voice off. xD In the options when you're selecting the Load Game/New Game.

Drinking game for this video: Take a shot every time Johnny says "The likes of..." Dude, seriously, I love your videos but I'm sure you can find other phrases to say instead.

The likes of this comment will help me construct future reviews. :D I guess I went a little overboard this time, I'll just make sure I have my coffee before I begin writing the next review.
Hearing that intro made my spine shiver. Thanks mate.
I like how subtle you were when talking about Crash Bandicoot.
3:15 True though. Lol XD
8:35 First game? You mean the game that was released on the MSX2 and the NES in 1987?
I've been watching your videos occasionally for a while now, and though I considered it, I never ended up feeling the need to subscribe. But a Crash Bandicoot marathon? That clinches it! I'm looking forward to your reviews of the Playstation's unofficial mascot.
Thanks for the blast of nostalgia :D
