Johnny vs. Crash Bandicoot

The King of PS1 Platformers has finally arrived on this channel, so I'm gonna be looking at every Crash Bandicoot game released on the Playstation 1, including the non-platforming games like Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash. There'll be a time and place for the later games, but let's just focus on his origins for now.

    If my memory serves me - about getting gems and stuff - if you die half way through the level, and then backtrack to get the other respawned boxes, it actually doesn't count anyway! If you get to the end of a stage without dying, Crash jumps in the air and goes to the 'box counting' screen - but dying even once and getting to the end causes Crash to sigh in relief and go straight back to the map. Doesn't matter if you backtrack. Die once, no 'box counting' screen. I found that out the hard way. If memory serves, anyway!

    I suggest you try to use your audio equipment as 'linear' as possible. The jump from 1:05 quality to 1:15 quality made it seem like your first microphone wasn't up to par (Though your second microphone sounds great! Is it a Yeti?) It you could find a way to use that second microphone throughout your videos, it would probably increase the overall quality. Still a great video overall, as always!

  • @SomecallmeJohnny

    @SomecallmeJohnny

    The Microphone in the beginning comes from the camera itself, I don't have one of those clip-on mikes, nor do I have a high-end camera. Maybe in a few hundred years. But the second Mike is a Samson C01U, which I plan on replacing sometime this year. Thanks for watching Sunny. :)

    It's all good! Your videos are still obviously nice and well edited, the quality is well above average KZread. If you are ever interested in buying a good camera with a quality built in mic you might want to check Craigslist for a Canon Rebel. T3i, or T2i (they're the same thing, one has an adjustable screen). Sometimes you can get them as low as $250. Happy filming!

    Crash Bandicoot was my childhood hero. All I ever really played on PS1. So glad you're doing a marathon on these wonderful games. I never beat the first Crash until I bought it again a few years back. Back when I was younger, I found it a scary game, especially Tawna's in-game model with that huge smile. The sequels are where the series really shines.

    Fun fact: as we'll see at Crash 2's intro, the regular ending of Crash 1 is considered canon because Cortex is seen falling from his hoverboard, whereas the 100% ending claims that Cortex disappeared. However, the 100% ending does state what happened to the game's bosses after Crash rescued Tawna. While it's unknown whether or not most of these aftermath stories are true, Ripper Roo's aftermath has some truth to it. He got "cured" of his madness and went on to become a writer (Dr. Roo), which can be seen in Crash 2.

    This game reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons (for some reason). Definitely a fun game. I remember the 2nd one being a big improvement on the first, so I look forward to that review. As far as breaking boxes goes, I no longer have the patience for breaking 1,000 boxes, collecting 100 skulltulas or 120 stars. That collection stuff was an element of early 3D gaming that I got bored with very quickly.

    I know I'm getting my information from wikis and KZread, but I was under the impression that Naughty Dog never owned Crash Bandicoot and that Naughty Dog was simply allowed to create four games. I've even heard some people claim that Naughty Dog was supposed to make THREE games, instead of four, but they were allowed to make Crash Team Racing. Oh, and thank you so much for covering the PS1 Crash games. I've never played this one, but my older sister and I *LOVED* Crash 2 and 3.

    Man, i played all three on my Psone when i was a child and i'd have to say that this is the most platform heavy out of them all and for me the most memorable because of its difficulty. The foggy bridge level was the biggest pain to get past for me. Nonetheless this game introduced me to an entirely new platforming world and it was fun to complete them all 100%

    I think the original Crash Bandicoot is a really good game… when you aren’t going for 100% completion. It’s a hard game just playing normally but going for 100% on the PS1 version is one of the most painful video game experiences

    The crates in the game were made to fill in the more boring parts of the levels. The character of Tawna was initially removed from the series due to some complaints from the marketing director at Universal Interactive Studios. In her point of view, the initial character design for Tawna was too outrageous, so Tawna was re-designed before being built into the game. Naughty Dog thought the ending result was too different from what they had in mind, so she was ultimately removed in the sequels. This game was made in memory of Tae Min Kim, who was part of Naughty Dog when they developed Way of the Warrior (1994) for the 3DO console. When Naughty Dog came up with main character's title, the marketing executives wanted Naughty Dog to use other names for the main character. Crash Bandicoot prevailed after Naughty Dog threatened to drop the project. There was a difficult variant of the level "Slippery Climb" that was called "Stormy Ascent". It was taken out due to being too difficult. However, it can still be played in a mostly complete version with a Gameshark, as the Bonus Level wasn't coded in, getting the bonus tokens will crash the game. The game was later implemented in "Crash Bandicoot N. Same Trilogy" as a downloadable DLC. Originally, a traditionally-animated sequence was meant to serve as the game's intro. However, despite being finished, it went unused and replaced with a completely different intro, using the game engine graphics instead. The unused sequence can be found online. During development, Crash Bandicoot was codenamed "The Sonic's Ass Game", since the camera always points to the characters back side. The character Dr. Neo Cortex's name is a play on the word "neocortex", a section of the brain. The character Dr. Nitrus Brio (aka Dr. N. Brio)'s name is a play on the word "embryo", an early stage of an organism. Crash Bandicoot was originally a wombat. His name was Willy the Wombat and he went through various designs before his final one. The design process at Naughty Dog was handled by Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin. Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson were then hired to help out with the character designs. Originally, Tiny Tiger was going to be in the game but was cut due to technological restraints. Along with Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, they are the only games where Aku Aku has no participation in the story and only speaks when he is summoned or when Crash is hit. Crash was named after his tendency to break crates. Crash Bandicoot was purposely designed to have no neck. This was to make his geometry less complicated for the designers. Even though Tawna was removed from the sequels, in Crash: Mind Over Mutant, a poster of a bandicoot who greatly resembles Tawna is seen on Crash's bedroom wall, which may show that Crash still has concern for her. The original instruction booklet lists Aku-Aku as "Witch Doctor Mask". In the Japanese version of this game and the next original two, every time Crash breaks open an Aku-Aku crate, Aku-Aku will give advice to the player on how to play the game. The game is considered the unofficial pet of Playstation despite the fact that Crash Bandicoot belongs to Universal Interactive Studio As in 1996 (the year in which the game was released) there were no analogs, when using these controls in the game it feels like Crash skates. In Uncharted 4, the level Boulders is playable as part of an Easter egg as well the original Crash game of PS1 at the epilogue. The game serves as a competition against Nintendo "Super Mario" and Sega "Sonic The Hedgehog" According to an animated beta intro that would be used in the game, Ripper Roo would be white, and the brothers Komodo and Tiny Tiger would appear. Along with Crash Bash in Japanese version and Crash Team Racing, they are the only games where in the endings or in the credits it is mentioned what happened to the characters. (In this case, the bosses of the game appear at the end and it is told what happened) Brendan O'Brien is the only actor voice in this game that made every character voices (Crash Bandicoot,Neo Cortex,N.Brio The famous Ripper Roo iconic laugh was taken from two movies: Lady and the Tramp and Tourist Trap. If you die after you reached a checkpoint, you need to restart the level to get the gem because all boxes you break respawn. This was fixed in other Crash Bandicoot games. Tawna was originally going to be named Karmen during development. Cortex was originally going to appear in cutscenes throughout the game and break the fourth wall talking to the audience on how he hates the clichés he embodies. In every game, Crash never speaks a word of English. However, if you watch this game's intro where Crash escapes Dr. Cortex's castle, Crash says, "uh-oh".
