    +cookieface80 How could Otacon re tell a story he has never seen? Like how could he describe scenes with this amount of details. I get the idea in Prince of Persia, because we are playing the dude who is telling the story.

    cookieface80 But do you really think the patriots would let the truth spread. Romanenko wrote a book about that but I obviously doubt the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo wouldn't censor that. Ohh I get it,because Otacon is a fan of mangas and animes he would just exagerate all the scenes.

    I just wanted to address one of your gripes. The reason why Snake so often repeats information he is given is due to how Japanese communicate. Backchanneling or repeating what one has heard is a vital component of communication in Japan. So, rather than being a problem with the original writing, it’s really a localization problem. Source: I live in Japan, speak Japanese, and teach linguistics at a Japanese university. Anyway, I love these videos, man!

    It was thought for a long time that something like that was normalized in the military too, to show that soldiers were paying attention and following orders. Their superior would tell them something, and they would repeat it back and confirm it. This turned out to not be true as it would be too annoying in real life.

    Despite what most people think, I don't consider The Twin Snakes to be a bad game or even a bad remake. Kojima stated that MGS1 is a parody on action movies (originally, there wasn't even going to be another sequel after this game) so I can appreciate the over-the-top cutscenes in the remake more than others: it was something he wanted to do in the original game but couldn't due to hardware limitations. It's undoubtedly an interesting take but the original is much easier to get a hold of and the level design of Shadow Moses wasn't made with the improved controls and mechanics from MGS2 in mind, having a detrimental effect on the difficulty.

  • @AluminumFusion22

    @AluminumFusion22

    It does take away from the game's more emotional moments, like Meryl's speech after getting shot by Sniper Wolf or Sniper Wolf's last words as she dies. The English localization was surprisingly great for a PS1 game and it's obvious that even the voice actors took the material seriously, so having the remake be this over-the-top parody sort of takes the wind out of the sails of what Kojima is trying to say.

    The letter "L" does not exist in Japanese Katakana. So whenever a word with an "L" in it is translated into Japanese, the "L" is replaced with an "R". So when translating Japanese into English, one has to guess whether or not an "R" is actually an "L" and vice versa. That is why Vergil is referred to as "Nelo Angelo" in DMC1 and holly is referred to as "Horry" here.

    This game impressed me in a whole different level back in late 90's. The presentation was something I've never witnessed in video games before. And that came from the guy who was still playing platformers on my SNES before jumping into this game. I mean, the writing and the narrative doesn't hold up today with a lot of plot holes and some dumb moments, but it's almost like a sci-fi anime the video game and I loved it for that.

    About the Twin Snakes crazy cutscenes, those were the original ideas Kojima had and could not do for the PS1 hardware limitations. In future games you will see shit even more crazier, and all directed by Kojima. Twin Snakes gets a lot of hate for being a GC exclusive, but is a great game, it fixes the problems MGS1 had, it runs at 60 fps, and looks great. Only bad thing about it is the music, it sucks. Anyway, cant wait for Johnny having su sumarise MGSV "story" XD

    +Jay M (JokerJay779) No but not for nostalgic reasons like most people. It's not an easy game to get a hold of (Gamecube only and it's relatively rare) and the level design of Shadow Moses wasn't made with the improved mechanics from MGS2 in mind, making the game very easy. The overdramatic cutscenes are really the only reason you should get it but it's much easier (and free) to just look them up on YT.

    Yeah, MGS4 is 75% cutscenes and some of them are even worse and longer than in MGS2. The entirety of Act 1 alone has 90 minutes of mandatory cutscenes and Codec calls (ones that have important plot information). For comparison in amount of pure cutscenes (so not counting the time spent in gameplay segments), the Tanker chapter in MGS2 clocks in at 45 minutes and at 90, Raiden's getting ready to disarm the C4 bombs. In MGS3, most cutscene time has been diverted to the Codec conversations but even then, at 90 minutes the Virtuous mission is done and the plot's really starting to begin with the Ocelot encounter during the Snake Eater mission.

    I'm loving the new set. It was so jarring going from your old set up to this instantly but I really like it. :)

    After seeing this I might consider playing this game. I keep hearing things about the franchise but I never had a reason to. Though I'm not sure whether to get the remake or the original.

    +Randy Rodriguez I'd say get the original to see Kojima's masterpiece for what it originally was, the remake can come later. Also, MGS3 is another decent place to begin trying the franchise seen as it's technically Episode I. :)

    +Randy Rodriguez I say go for MGS3 first, there are no spoilers to future games and it takes place at the beginning of the franchise, plus it has The End, one of the greatest boss battles of all time

    +Red Lantern Reviews I disagree with starting in the middle of the series, especially when the graphics and features are a major upgrade from prior games. I say start with MGS1 and work your way up. You'll appreciate it that way more and every game going forward has call backs to previous games. Hell, MGS 3 isn't as interesting or fun if you don't have the relationship with Ocelot from the prior games first.

    Two other things I wish you talked about was the game's OST and the little touches of Shadow Moses. The soundtrack for MGS1 was always so hypnotic and immersive to me, it really made Shadow Moses seem real. That music, paired with the snow effects, footprints, cold breath effect, really gave the game and Shadow Moses a level of atmosphere that I can't really use words to describe. The threat of a nuclear launch seemed real playing through it. As for the little touches, you covered it somewhat in terms of the optional story stuff, but I wish you showed a couple more of the neat little easter eggs and hidden things like seeing Liquid's parachute in the snow field and getting a codec call about it. I know it'd have made the video even longer, but the soundtrack was just such a key element of the game for me that it's sad to see neglected. Great review though Johnny, interested in hearing what you think about MGS2.

    I think my favorite part of the Twin Snakes version is when that one soldier tells the DARPA chief to "shut up in there, will ya?" Instead of simply ducking, Snake *suspends himself on the ceiling corner with his arms and legs like Spider-Man*.
