Well he is right, though. Hoenn does look like an almost rehash of Kanto. For example. U walk to the grass without an starter. And than you get an starter and started battling. U go to an next town & up to an route & than come all the way back to the professor's lab. U start your journey. U can get an Rattata ( Zigzagoon ), Wingull ( Spearow ), Pidgey ( Tailow ) like Pokemon for your first capture. U go to an town where the first Gym is, but u can't compete yet until later in the game. There's an rehash Viridian Foreat area where u can get an Caterpie like Pokemon that can evolve into an Butterfree or Beedrill like. U can get an Oddish ( Seedot ) or an Bellsprout ( Lotad ) and there final evolutions is required to use an stone. First Gym is an Rock type like Brock was. There's an bicycle route where u can ride though the road only with bikes; like in Kanto, 3rd Gym Leader is an Electric type like Lt. Surge. There's an Grimer & Muk ( Gulphin & Swalot ) replica. There's an sanctuary that looks exactly like the mansion from Kanto & the evil organizations are there. 3/4 of the Elite Four are Ghost, Ice & Dragons types. I can go on.

Hmm... I feel like a lot of Hoenn's identity was overlooked in this review. There were a ton of memorable landmarks introduced in this region in my opinion, for example: you could climb up and explore an active volcano, a city that is entirely made up of tree houses, a city that resides inside an inactive volcano (which, mind you, can only be accessed by diving underwater and resurfacing after entering an underwater cave), and a town based entirely in the middle of the ocean and made up of only floating logs and wooden planks to name a few. Hoenn was also the first region to have a desert in a Pokemon game. Idk, in my opinion, Hoenn stands out a ton from the other regions and without a doubt has its own identity. Sure, there are things drawn from Kanto like the cycling road and whatnot (but almost all Pokemon games share these similarities now), but it also brought a substantial amount of new and memorable locations to the table as well.

Jordan. I don't know. The way that the game progresses you makes no sense and the way the game handles is progression is really tedious. Especially with the whole overbundents of HM'S the game throws at you and how some aren't autorized until after you beaten an certain Gym to unlock; with Fly being an example that u can't activate until you beaten the 6th gym. It's becomes even more tedious. Like after getting an badge from Rustboro City, there's an connection between an city in an next cave and through the area where meteor cave is at. But there's rocks that u can't get through there and u have to get an Rock Smash for it. So I have to go back near Petalburg to talk the sailor that I rescued it's Wingull to take me towards the next town. That is just one backtracking. But than I go to the volcanic area, to Fallabar Town and to the caves of meteors to stop Team Magma or Aqua. Next after I stop Team Magma or Aqua at the meteor cave, I have to come all the way back to Fallabar Town and the volcanic area where an path to an trolly is opened, than I have to face the evil team again and head to Lavaridge Town. That's also backtracking. And than after my 4th Gym Badge in Lavaridge Town, I have to go all the way back to Petalburg City to face it's dad for the fifth gym. So I have to walk all the way back without having Fly for an shortcut to face Norman for the fifth Badge. Like ok? We're going there already? So I have to do another backtracking again for the 3rd time. And than after beating Norman and receiving Surf, I had to go back to Mauville Town and head west for an new location. That's the 4th time I had to backtrack. Arriving at Fortree City, an invisible wall blockes the 6th Gym, head to routes, meet Steven & giving me his Devon Scope, going back to Fortree City and use it to chase away an invisible wall; which was an Kecleon, and doing the 6th gym. That's the 5th backtracking. After Fortree City, I head back to the route where I met Steven and continuing the path, running through route 121 ( I think. I'm not sure. ), arriving at an town where an mall is at; only realizing that I went back to route 121 ( Again. I think. I'm not sure. ) for an another route that I skip and heading towards Mt. Pyre; you know the cemetary one that looks like the cemetery tower from Gen. 1, where once again Magma or Aqua are at. That's the 6th time I've had to backtrack. But than I have to travel back to the town where the mall is; only I once again realized that the water route is block because of the evil organizations scheme, heading to there hideout and than I have to fly all the way back to that volcanic area where tbe trolly was, where another path to an other evil organizations is at, defeat them and I have to fly back to the town where the mall is at to where the rest of the route is nothing but surfing through water. That's about 7th, 8th and 9th time I have to backtrack again. Granted, at least I can use Fly now to take an shortcut. But still. That's still more than 5 times that I've had to go back & forth and back & forth to the same damn areas that I already travel through more than 3 times already. And it isn't optional. It's mandatory. The game really wants you to head to these stupid craps you'll already wwnt through juat for an new breaching path that we could've explored it from the beginning. Honestly, the way that the game handles it's structured of the game is the game's biggest problem for me. If it didn't have any of this bullcrap that the game wanted you to progress, than I would've had an good time with the game. But unfortunately, it doesn't. It is full of padding. And again, combined with the overbundent of HM issues that the game throws at you, it is really tedious. I really didn't enjoyed it as I was hoping it will. I can't handled it's structure. It's almost as bad as Zelda: Skyward Sword was.

  • @HY0

@@jjc4924 The HM issue is something I can agree on, but the backtracking wasn't really an issue in my experience. A lot of the examples you shared aren't necessarily backtracking (like the one you gave with the Fortree gym and Steven/Devon scope), but rather a roadblock which is present in almost every Pokemon game. The reason why I didn't have many issues is the fact that the developers intentionally designed routes to be much faster to navigate when coming back with things like cliffs and having you breeze through descending Mt. Chimney. I never really found any of these things tedious and as far as things are concerned, almost every Pokemon entry has backtracking. Kanto and Sinnoh come to mind having fetch quests within minutes of starting the game. Sinnoh's being the worst offender with how long and tedious the first route is and how large the grass patches are (mixed with the slow engine, makes it a nightmare). With that said, I kinda see where you're coming from; however, I didn't really share the frustration you experienced (minus the HM management). But to each their own.

Jordan. I gonna have to disagree with you about there about the padding not being tedious. Because it sorta is. And the way it's design isn't what I call an genius or it doesn't get any faster. I can sorta see what you mean by that. But it still doesn't make excuses of how the game decision progression and making me backtrack so many times makes it an absolute chore from my enjoyment. I just wish it handles it structure way better than it should've been. Which is why I'm thankful that the remake of Gen. 3 fixes that problem for me. So that makes it less tedious. It's still there in some extent. But not as overkilled as Emerald. Plus with less overbudent of HM's. As for Kanto or Sinnoh having bad padding. I'm gonna disagree in some extents as well. Kanto was at least non-linear, it's optional and doesn't rely on HM's that much. So that gets an pass. And while Sinnoh does have some padding moments, I don't find it nearly as bad as Hoenn was. At least I can use Fly without having to wait for it to autorized at the later 2nd halve of the game. Also, I do agree that Sinnoh has it's very slow moments throughout the entire game. But that only happens in Diamond & Pearl.

I feel like Johnny doesn't really "get" Pokémon. He dislikes the fact that your MC doesn't have a personality, but that's kind of the point. You're supposed to self-insert. YOU ARE the main character (it is an RPG, after all). He also gets disappointed with the way the Kyogre VS Groudon conflict ends, but doesn't really elaborate why or how he'd make it better or something. IMO, Johnny cares too much about story in video games, to the point that he seems to enjoy them less for that if his standards aren't met. Sure, that can be a valid criticism if the game puts a lot of emphasis on story (like Kindom Hearts), but not for something like Pokémon.

My biggest problem with Emerald is that there are so many HM's that are permanent to proceed to the game & some of them aren't active into the overworld until after you beat an certain Gym Leader that u are now required with. With Fly being an example. And this game has so many backtracking or padding that you'll be getting irritating of. Best example is you Especially with some HM'S that aren't autorized until you beaten the Gym. That is poorly design. And the Pokemon variety and rosters of the game is so lacking that I just wish there were more & the trainers are some of the worst of the series because they been reusing Poochyena, Wingulls or any Pokemons over & over again that you just wish there were more. Also the switching of bike techs is annoying.

It's the most common vowel in the English language, represented by an e rotated 180° in phonetic spellings, and can be represented by a, e, i, o, u, or even y depending on the context. Other examples include the a's in "America", the u in "stun", the io in "pronunciation", and many many more.

Their solution to a problematic RNG mechanic is to layer it with another problematic RNG mechanic.

Pokemon Showdown shows just how much it adds so damn much to Pokemon gameplay and how versatille Pokemon now is. Even during the main story, it makes every Pokemon you get feel unique, and therefore more "real." Natures that would be trash in a competitive setting could be made somewhat useful in the main game-for example, a Pokemon that's a fast sweeper in a competitive setting could have a more defensive nature in a playthrough of the main story, and that defensive nature could be what causes that Pokemon to hang on by very little HP and cause you to win a major battle, giving you memories of that particular Pokemon and having it be special and unique. But yes, it's absolutely ridiculous how time consuming and luck-based it is to legitimately make a competitive-ready Pokemon, even now.

Well, looks like we don't agree about things with this one, but that's alright. I'm guessing some of it is due to one viewpoint coming from someone who grew up with the game and played it as it came out (started with blue, and have played every game chronologically since then), versus returning to it after having played later entries. It's still one of my favorite generations. There were so many things that blew my mind. The colors, the music, the locations, the legendaries... and to its credit this is the first game where the rival was kinda friendly and we had big dangerous legendaries threatening the world. And I really gotta contest you on the locations, it was a bit repetitive in the first half but it had a lot of cool stuff. An active volcano where you're close to the lava, all the places with soot fall, the cave with meteor craters, abandoned shipwrecks, a desert, everything related to dive, and my favorite, the rain forest complete with a tree village. I'm long overdue for a replay, this time of Sapphire which I started with rather than Emerald. It's gonna be interesting comparing the two, because from what I remember Emerald wasn't that much of an upgrade. It had the battle frontier, but that never interested me.

Not to mentioned that there's quite of few areas in Hoenn that looked identical to the Kanto ones. Like Petalburg Wood being Viridian Wood, Mt. Pyre being an Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town, Cycling Bikes being exactly like the one from Kanto. The list goes own.

Gen 2 had some of the worst pacing I've seen in an RPG. It gets harder at a very slow pace and once you get to Kanto, the difficulty becomes inconsistent. Kanto Trainers are piss easy whilst gym leaders are pretty challenging. GOOD GOD. RED IS SUCH A KICK IN THE NUTS. There's scaring the player and then there's just being a dick.

The only reason y'all complained about the level curve is because they don't give you enough experience points to level up your Pokemon quicker. Like I understand that. But it's not the end of the world. And you don't have to grind so much just to over leveled your Pokemon that much unless you're that desperate. @@culturedvulture2015 Oopsie, i though we were talking about Platinium. But it's still true, as why would you evolve you're Eevee into a Flareon? Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Espeon are objectively better for a special attacker, same for Leafeon on the physical side(dat speed and stab), and if you want a tank, Umbreon is there with juicy defensive stat. Unless you're a fire type fanatic, but why are you playing gen 4, then? Beside, people don't really have Magmortoar in high regard, especialy since he's so hard to get, while being catchable too late in the game, in a side zone. So in the end, we only have trhee viable fire type in Sinnoh. With the starter being the best and coolest of both trio. Yeah!

The remakes added much more than Emerald really. DexNav, PlayNav, BuzzNav, soaring, mirage spots, Delta Episode etc. Characters are less shallow, connectivity is easier, less amount of Pokemon is weak, water routes are visually more pleasant. The list of advantages goes on. Some people will always lament over Battle Frontier which I found quite surprising. It's one area with additional 6 battle formats to play with. The campaign itself is almost exactly the same like in Ruby and Sapphire but with more double battles, a couple of new areas and some trivial changes here and there.

Brandon JS Lea Yes, but the net gain is way more than what’s lost. You have remakes like Twin Snakes and the like that do way more to mess with the original in intrusive ways. As far as I’m concerned, the addition of mechanics from all the later generations along with some exclusive moves and mega evolutions is pretty generous. Dexnav, sound and visual overhaul... A lot of the basic updating should not go unnoticed. Also, I much prefer the Delta Episode, but that’s just a personal preference thing. Single player story is more my thing than replaying the same variable yet generic battles. Just a subjective sorta thing though. I appreciate that people want more bang for their buck, but it’s a really great remake, all things considered.

You absolutely needed the internet or in my case the official strategy guide in order to find the Regi's back in the day as much as you do now. You also needed to use brail to a more easily decipherable extent in Fire Red and Leaf Green in the post game in order to get the Sapphire so you can link to the Hoenn games.

The secret bases and all the phrases were for a mechanic for socialising with other players with the mix record features. When you mixed records, the answers of things that you said in interviews or questionnaires would pop up in another players game. When you have a secret base and mix records, your secret base location pops up in the other players game. You can battle the player in their base with their best Pokemon at the time of mixing records. Also yeah the braille is weird but at the time of release you were given a braille guide in the box.

The selection of Electric-types sucks in the Hoenn games (with Manectric probably being the best one), and not everyone is going to save $80.000 (or, god forbid, gamble for the 4.000 coins) for that Thunderbolt TM at the Game Corner. Rayquaza is way more hype than he gave it credit for but to be fair it was a hidden gem in Sapphire and Ruby. When it comes to the Regis, there's a reason why Emerald is the only Pokemon guide book I ever bought... Btw Emerald's post game is the only one I ever gave a damn about. Him mostly skipping the battle frontier makes me not care what he thinks about Pokemon at all. Oh, and also the contests are pretty damn underrated but I can't fault anyone for hating or ignoring them, especially this many years later. If he ever does get around to Omega/Alpha he's gonna suffer. Its biggest improvement is Fly and I forget anything else.
