I don't know. I like it when a story shifts from light to dark. It makes the dark moments all the more shocking (though, at times, funny).

Me too! Sorry for being late to the party, but I especially like it when the dark tones come DIRECTLY from the villain's influence, regardless of whether they have a point. Like how the war, lilac's torture, and the snapping scene were directly because of brevon; and in other cases, like Shen in KFP2, The cluster in steven universe, The x in metroid fusion, and so on.

I actually kinda liked Freedom Planet's story. The tone was on and off, and cutscenes could drag on, but it really felt like I was watching a Saturday Morning cartoon with similar tones to Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. I thought it was a nice ride through, as that's just how it felt to me, and it fitted.

From what I've played, Freedom Planet has issues that would be nitpicked to hell and gone if it were actually a Sonic game, but as a standalone title it's really got some great flowful gameplay and Lilac, at least, is fun as hell to blow through a level with. I'm looking forward to when they update this game with the additional playable characters I've heard about. - Lewis

I see a lot of people mocking this game, but when I go see the steam store page, there are 1.927 reviews, 1.871 of them are positive, giving the game "Overwhelmingly Positive" reception. People that diss this game mostly have never played it. It really gets on my nerves.

After being disappointed by the majority of new fighters that have become available in "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" via DLC, I would definitely love to see Lilac as a playable character, especially if everyone else has become aware of Freedom Planet's existence.

For the past few years now Sonic fans have been creating better 2D Sonic games then Sega. Now with each passing year we are seeing prototype 3D Sonic fans that are looking like they will put Sega to shame once they are completed. When fans are creating better games then you, something is seriously wrong.

Fun fact. When this was still in the "Sonic Fangame" Stage, Eggman (Robotnik) Was intended to be the main villain before Freedom planet became it's own IP.

When I first saw the game on sale on Humble Store, its thumbnail image immediately sort of interested me but also turned me off to it because of anthropomorphic animals. Then, a few months, one preview video by Slowbeef and one let's play by Best Friends later, I ended up with two copies of the game.

5 years later, but it's almost time. Freedom Planet 2 is coming out this Spring. So uh... within the next 3 months. Hopefully, it will have been worth the weight.

zhaoyun255 by badly damaged you mean seared flesh "feathers" basically her very essence beind shredded off faster then lettuce in a slap chop, and being so crippled after being rescud she can barely crawl away from the panda officer let alone stand. for a non violent game (no gore) it captured more on what torture is really about then the gorest of games like manhunt,farcry 3, and others. the one thing i love is the line exchange between the villian and lilac. it sells their characters perfectly drevon " thats good to know but i was more interested in your resolve. you crack easily, it seems. and this one i have a funny feeling about you. i'll bet i could hack at your limbs all day and youd still find a way to bite back." Lilca " ill do more then that you monster" the fact the villian is so cold callous and vile is something missing in villians today. games try to humanize, or relate the villian or make them seem remorseful. like "oh hes evil cus bad things happened to him or he lost someone close or evil was done to him" drevon is just pure evil and he pursues power and rule no matter the cost he revels in his own vile existence since he has the power not just in his army but in his own skill as well. its why people love kefka, luca blight, they are evil pure unapologetic evil and they want one thing POWER beyond anything else and they will and do achieve that and their skill and command prove that hell luca blight has by far the best boss battle ever 3 turn based battles (all of which you can and will lose if ill prerpared) and a final duel which unless your drugged up cant lose. and even then at his end he still howls like a maniac saying how his evil will never die even if he does for he is evil and he will live forever. its that special kind of vile that makes a villian just resonate and make you realize people like that DO exist. there is no compassion, no empathy, no concern, and no mercy. and drevon hits that spot and the fact after all hes done the heroes especially lilac after her torture continues to fight a potentially lost battle for the sake of her friends and her planet shows that no matter what she will beat him even if her body is crushed,broken,burned,and maimed. its the hallmark of a true hero. the best heros arnt just goodie two shoes or people who help the downtrounded their the person whom will risk everything down to their very existence if need be to make sure the ones they care for and the world they love is no longer in danger. lilac and her friends easily sail into the top level of heroism cus of their actions. they are leauges better then mario whom is just a player proxy and hell win cus hes the good guy and thats that. a true hero knows suffering and loss and pain yet persaveres because they have to cus if they fall if they give up no one else can take the mantle either out of weakness (inability tofight back on that level) or fear. its why my personal favorite hero is maxim from lufia 2 his final moments after the final battle and he does it for his child and the land he and his wife loved and his friends along with his final words it makes one know just how much you as a player can connect with a great story and feel a great loss the likes no movie or book can do. the characters are stronger because you the player guided them you kept them alive and were along the journey to save the world or day or fight tyranny it resonates more then simply viewing it or reading it.

Got this game on the Wii U eShop. Had a blast, but DAMN! Lord Brevon REALLY makes you work for your victory!

This is one of my favorite games ever now. Charming characters and fun as hell gameplay. Literally all I want in a platformer. Just wish I was actually GOOD at it. Died 80+ times on my first Lilac playthrough...

I actually really like Freedom Planet's story, but I also like stories that feel like they're trying even if they don't end up as well as they could. It's also why I like SA2's story a lot.

Johnny, 4:05. You did in amazing job. I can't- I can't stop rewatching it. Simply amazing.

That was damn near traumatizing when he cut to it. Like Christ almighty, she's getting the... er... purple shards(?) tortured out of her and judging by those horrific screams is in excruciating pain too. Joseph Cross I found that part to be a surprising character moment for Carol. It's awkward, but it reminded me that she's just a twelve-year-old girl with the weight of the entire world on her shoulders. Throughout all of the chaos, I forgot that for a little bit, as if she was somewhat older because of what they were going through. She's mature for her age, but at the end of the day she just wants to be a kid.

Eh. If I wanted to rewatch it, I'd watch it on KZread or play an earlier version of the game.

For some reason I keep thinking of the three having a unique job class... Lilac: Combat Dancer; Uses her own unique fighting style with the controls for fluid combos. Carol: Brawl Rider; With her motorcycle and acrobatics, she can really rip through the enemies. Milla: Mystical Defender; With her mystic block she can defend herself from attacks.

I'm suprised you failed to mention the fact that there is a huge sonic 2 Slicer boss.

I was actually able to play the game on the Nintendo Wii U, which is how I was able to find out about "Freedom Planet" when it came out.

Geez this game has... 1. Sonic gameplays 2. Megaman powerups 3. Mario Jumps 4. Pacman enemies 5. Rayman Items

the cutscenes of this game remind me of those sprite animations that popped up on newgrounds and youtube

Am I the only one who thinks of Megatron from Transformers Animated when I hear Brevon? I've been gradually growing more and more tired of the official side of Sonic for a long time, to the point where giving anything past Generations the benefit of a second thought is far from my mind. My brother introduced me to Freedom Planet just few days before it's official Steam release and I can say for DAMN sure that this has become a major favorite of mine! Freedom Planet is taking a place high up there with S3&K as one of my favorite 2D platformers of all time, as it just does so much right from a gameplay standpoint that I feel Sonic has been lacking tremendously for a long goddamn time. I *LOVE* Freedom Planet, and when I get my time back and start feeling better, Vic and I are gonna finish that Let's Play!

Anyone else feel like this and Shovel Knight are gonna be the new Sonic and Mario? If so I just hope they don't play the Olympic games together. King Knight VS Lilac in a long jump match, HA, that's a funny thought.

So I just marathoned all of your Johnny vs. videos after stumbling onto your channel. I really enjoy your stuff man, I love your voice, how clear and eloquent you sound! Keep up the good work!!

I hate when people makes it sound like stuff should either be serious all the time or funny all the time. One of the many reasons why i think Anime is better than most American TV is because it mixes serious and dark storys with funny and lighthearted comedy. There are a few American shows like Avatar and Teen Titans that also mixes serious and dark stuff with funny and crazy stuff but most of the time American shows must only be one of them. Its way more enjoyable in my opinion if a show can both be serious and lighthearted so its annoying to me when people complain about this.

I just don't understand why SEGA can't make games like this. This looks a million times funner than Sonic Boom could have ever hoped to be.

Sad that this plays more like a Sonic game than the last "Sonic" game.

I'm in love with Lilac! Seriously, I think I need to get out more.

This review was a pleasant surprise. About a month ago, I was playing this game for the first time. Super solid gameplay.

Got this on the Steam summer sale! And it is AWESOME. It's like a love letter to the best of the genesis games of the 90's. I will admit I wish the story was a bit better paced and fleshed out, and I think a little exploration into Lilac and Carol's past and how they met up would be welcome. Still, this is one of the far more challenging games I played in a while. I died about 20 or so times on the last boss and had to continue ONLY on him, and the other bosses gave me a hard time until I learned their patterns. Plus the stages are challenging too. It's tough, but it's never unfair or impossible once you figure stuff out. A great platformer for anybody who grew up with Sega and platformers in general. Hope the dlc we get soon adds even more fun to it!

I only have one question. How come this game isn't nearly as poplar as it should be? I mean this is the best "Sonic" game since Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Gameplay is fantastic and soundtrack is awesome(Fortune Night act 1 Theme is my favourite tune in the game btw). True, Story and voice acting are kinda average but there is Classic mode if you're not into that kind of things. I don't know but when i play Freedom Planet, and see how good this game is, i sometimes wonder. Do we really need more mediocre at best Sonic games from SEGA?

It's a pretty extreme exaggeration to say such a simple and somewhat unoriginal game, is better than every Sonic game that succeeded Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Why does this game encourage so much hate against Sonic. Sonic's quality didn't take a serious nosedive until 2006.

It came out around the time Sonic Boom came out. And that was after the mediocrity that was Lost World. It kept the soul of the original Sonic while Sonic himself just kind of... lost his way. It was never bashing Sonic on purpose, but it came out at the perfect time to fill the niche that Sonic himself was supposed to be occupying. The fact that the game just had a passion that seemed to be lacking in Sonic games at the time sealed the deal.

i really hope this gets on the 3ds or wii u

It'd be nice, but the engine the game's built in [Clickteam Fusion 2, with the Sonic Worlds libraries] isn't very fond of systems that aren't PC. It would require a LOT of restructuring to get to work.

vgmaster02 No, it's because Clickteam Fusion was the most accessible engine. It's not because they hate macs, it's because they'd have to give it the same amount of work as they would to make it run on consoles.

Looks like we won't be seeing a sequel if all the mac and console users can't buy this game because whoever made this game was too fucking lazy to just put in that extra time to make the game accessible on ALL platforms! Seriously, I am fucking beyond pissed off now with mac users, ME INCLUDED, not getting the same treatment that the pompous PC users are getting. I'm sorry, but why should I have to spend almost $500 just to get a damn computer that can play games I want to play when my mac is working just fine and can handle games just as well as PCs can? It's not fucking fair and I am fucking fed up now with always, ALWAYS, getting the short end of the stick, if any part of the stick at all! Do you want my money or not, developers? If you don't want my money, then fine, I'll just spend it towards companies like Nintendo who actually know how to develop shit for stuff I actually fucking own!

i got the game on release day, and let me tell you, the stages are childsplay compared to the bosses. there is a reason the death system is so relaxed and inconsequential. its because you will be dieing. a lot. at least for a while untill you learn their extensive, and hard to predict patterns.

So, to anyone visiting this review from now on - the sequel has just launched, and it's absolutely phenomenal. It's available on Steam, with plans for console ports. Seriously, it's great. Go play it. You nerds.

I beat Adventure Mode with Lilac a few days ago and now I'm playing as Carol (with plans for a Milla and Neera playthrough afterward, both on Adventure Mode because I want to see if they have exclusive cutscenes), FP2 is shaping up to be my GOTY and will possibly take over the first game as my favourite indie title.

Yeah, say the tone’s all over the place after Forces. At least there was a transition between the light hearted and darker moments, and if anything I think the light hearted stuff makes darker moments seem all the more darker, it’s kinda like how Clement described FF6

Yeah, Freedom Planet! I love this game! Found it just recently because of a stream I happened to watch and bought the game instantly when I saw Lilac dance in front of the disco ball in one of the stages! I didn't even see this game coming, man. It's great fun with great music and with a relatively clumsy but entertaining story. Personal thoughts dictate you owe it to yourself to get it and play it if you're a fan of platformers. Seriously, for 15 bucks. That's the price of a sandwich.

wtf 15$ for an effing sandwich,sounds like the worlds second biggest rip-off.(first is sonic boom lol)

I liked the changes in tone. They qerent that out of place. Yeah, we saw a beheading, but the characters havent, and from the sound of the story they have seen their fair share of brutal action before countless times. The lighthearted moments mix with the darker stuff to help things feel far more natural in my opinion. I like it. :3

I like the Ristar references, like Lilac's boost in the air and those floating seeds you grab onto.

Considering that Sonic Boom nearly made me quit Sonic the Hedgehog, I might give this a chance. Seriously, this game looks awesome. :)

To be honest, I liked shovel knight, but I kind of find its praise........over rated. Now, before you come at me with fire and rage, I like shovel knight, I just think its not that special. Also, some games you can try out, Don't starve, with the dlc reign of giants. And my pick for Indy game of the year, the binding of Isaac rebirth. I love the original Isaac and the remake is amazing!

You want to know why Lilac looks more like a hedgehog than a dragon? It's because back when this game was still a Sonic fan game, she WAS a hedgehog and she looked a bit more Sonic-y, you know, skin coloured arms and face, white gloves and all that stuff. Then they changed her to a dragon to make it less Sonic-y, I guess... Huh, I actually prefer that old design.

Growing up playing the old 2D Sonic games and being a fan of old-style platformer.....my true dream game have finally surfaced the future and since this game is soon coming to the Wii U, I absolutely cannot wait to play it! :D

I've lost so much sleep on this game, and I'm glad you gave it a positive review.

Honestly, even though it first started out as a Sonic game, I really don't think people should compare it to those games as it evolved into it's own IP.

If you think thats bad then put any non pokemon monster tamer game in front of (most) pokemon fans and see how they'd react, they effectively have an iron grasp over an entire genre (mobile games dont count, with the exeption of the nexomon games that is)

I met a few of the people behind this game at Florida Supercon! It was a lot of fun to chat and ask questions, as well as play the demo they had there. I even came home with two Freedom planet posters. :D

Games like this is where the industry needs to go. All these indie games have more quality and content and is more moderately price than anything being put on the shelves now.

You should review Sonic After The Sequel by LakeFeperd. It is a Sonic fan game, but it's one of the best fan games out there and I'll even go on and say it's in my top Sonic games list. It also has its own story, along with cutscenes and original music as well, and it's free(since it's a fangame). It's not urgent that you review it as soon as possible, but you should definitely give it a look.

I agree, I think he should also review Before the sequel, chrono adventure, classic, axiom, and when their completed XG, Time Twisted, Edge of Darkness, Classic 2. I LOVE fan games since I'm a huge fan of Classic Sonic games. Sadly, its hard to find talented fan game makers like Lakefeperd. seriously who else has made three full fan games in 2 years?

I don't care how good Sonic After the Sequel is...I can't get past the fact that Sonic 3 was "Sonic After the Sequel". I know there's a tincy wincy bit of time between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 in which the Death Egg is falling and you could probably do some stuff in that time frame...but I don't know.

Hey Johnny are you eventually going to make a "now and then" of sonic lost world? It's been a year now and I'm interested to know if your thoughts on that game still hold up since your review.

Tried it, loved it, and have trouble stopping even after beating it several times. AND TWO MORE CHARACTERS ARE ON THE WAY, AS WELL AS A SEQUEL!! This is the kind of game that Sonic Team would make if they still cared about their mascot franchise, which, if Sonic Boom is anything to go by, they don't.

I feel like Sonic tripped and fell for a couple of years starting with Shadow the Hedgehog but got up again with Sonic Colors but and he's doing pretty good. I don't count Sonic Boom because it wasn't even made by Sonic Team, even if it isn't good.

Sega has always cared the most about Sonic above all us; "caring" doesn't lead to good games by itself.

I've only played through the game as Lilac. Do you get different cutscenes if you choose to play as Carol from the beginning?

+TopHatLucario They have different bosses, paths and levels. Milla's fight with the panther mech is entirely different. Same will be for Torque, radically different gameplay.

Milla can also pick up items like crystal flowers and gas cans and throw them for decent damage.

I love this game but my biggest problem is the levels. They take WAY too long, like it took me about 12 minuets to beat the first stage. This wouldn't be bad if they separated the first part of a stage from then next so if you beat the first half you could quit and play the second half. Still this game is EXTREMELY good and i'm exited for the squeal.

Glad you gave this some spotlight, it deserves it. Hell, if you were my Stram friend, I would've gifted it to you too. Also it was 50% off on BF.

Now THIS is what you call a SPINOFF Game! lol.. Captain Toad was also a spinoff game.. Sonic Boom is Not a spinoff lol.. it's just a very bad and boring game with sonic characters in it. I always saw Freedom Planet as an indie spinoff to Sonic, Megaman type games, and I remember playing the demo 2 years ago and loving it :)

YES! I was wondering if you were ever gonna review this game. I'm so glad you liked it. From the first time I tried the demo, I was hooked. This game is a love letter to 90's platformers. Beautiful sprites, awesome music and fun as hell gameplay. The voice acting is pretty hit or miss and the story isn't exactly Shakespeare material but I think it's good enough for what it is. This little indie gem is one of my favorite 2D platformer games ever along with S3&K and Mario World. Sooooo....Any chance there might be an LP of this game on SGB at some point? (Please, say yes.)

So stoked for the next review, Binding of Isaac on the ps4 has been one of my games of the year!

Did this game shit all over Sonic Boom?! It looks fun. I'm getting this soon along with Shovel Knight, Shantae Pirates Curse and Half-Genie Hero. Man, these indie games as of late are far better then most of the triple A/$60 games. I like where this is going.

I hope this gets a console release pacifically Wii U and 3ds. If Meme runner can get on there this should be a no-brainer. I would rather play this than buy either versions of Sonic Doom

If your computer can run Google Chrome it can run this game at 50FPS. Also, sorry, but I doubt it's getting a console release anytime soon.

It's confirmed for the Wii U, but they haven't confirmed nor denied other platforms.

Since Freedom Planet started out as a Sonic fan game the comparisons are inevitable. Thankfully the stigma that the characters were based on sonic OC's doesn't seem to be around, though. The developers seemed that they were really trying to give it its own identity. I would forgive the story, personally but if they can get that glitch you mentioned with the crashing I would buy the game. The boss fights look fun.

This game really does look extremely fun to play not to mention this brings back fond memories of playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles. :D I'll have to give this game a shot in the future.

How is it that a 15 dollar game is SOOOO much better then a 60 dollar Sonic game?
