In 2021, genealogist Henry Louis Gates from the show Finding Your Roots, featured Rosanne Cash as his guest and confirmed Vivian Liberto's Sicilian ancestry. Her paternal ancestry traced back 300 years in Cefalù, Sicily.[18] In addition, Gates discovered that one of Vivian's maternal great-grandfathers, Lafayette Robinson, was a mixed-race man who was the son of Sarah A. Shields, a mixed woman born into slavery and freed along with her eight siblings by their white father and slave owner William Shields.[19] Gates also found wedding registry records for Sarah and her white husband Andrew Robinson who had married legally and openly during the Civil War in Perry County, Alabama, with Sarah's father paying the county recorder to register the wedding. According to her official biographer Ann Sharpsteen, and Vivian Cash's own words in her 2007 memoir, Vivian strongly identified throughout her life as a White/Sicilian-American and did not identify as Black or multi racial, stating in her memoir, "It didn't help that Johnny issued a statement to the KKK informing them that I wasn't black. To this day I hate when accusations and threats from people like that are dignified with any response at all."[13]

The more I learn about Vivian, the madder I am about how she was depicted in Walk The Line. What wife wouldn’t be upset having her husband fall in love with another woman, not to mention the countless others along the way? She truly was stunning. Definitely out of Johnny’s league and she was with him when he had nothing.

Exactly what I was thinking. June Carter chased after Johnny knowing he was married and she also done drugs with him and was an alcoholic, but they made Vivian out to be hateful and that’s bs!! June Carters son was part of the making of the movie so he was trying to make his mom look so innocent 🙄 I personally didn’t think he or June could sing and Vivian was more beautiful inside and out unlike June

Her love for Cash hurt her more than a bunch of ignorant fools back then. Her daughters said she loved Cash until the day she died. In fact they said when their dad died, that their mom said that she didn't think she wanted to be alive with him not in the world. That was the saddest part of her life. When she wrote in her letters to him that she would love him forever, she meant it with all her heart and soul.

I'm A half breed Navajo/Irish American my father is Native American Navajo and my Mother is Irish I have 10 brother's and sister's some look dark with dark thick hair and some are light skin with light brown hair. My youngest sister came out with blond hair and really light color skin but she celebrated are native culture and was raised in the low income hood or middle class. My nephew kid's are half native American and black they are still babies besides his older son he is light skin with thick curly hair. I never asked him what does he favor more his native American culture or his black folks culture? He's just like any other normal kid's in the neighborhood. Just know all or most of the kid's are halfbreeds none are full blooded. I did half a full blooded African lady for a neighbor from Africa, that became an American. At the same time I had a neighbor that lived across the street that was from China and became Amrican on the other side of me my neighbor was a women from Mexico that became an American. I thought that was cool I live in a multiy cultural neighborhood. My Chinese neighbor's daughter she married an Salvadoran there daughter and son speaks 3 different languages Chinese, Spanish, English they have to speak to both of there grandparent, they don't speak much English they know just enough to get by. And if you judge the Salvadoran/Chinese gal on what she looks like you would probably be wrong. And my niece's and Nephew's seeing them all together dark and light and they are al related by blood. As many states still acted on miscegenation laws during that time and things really didn't start changing until 1967. I knew that Vivian was of black descent and how she was portrayed in the movie was disgraceful. I'll never watch the movie again. How could she have such a happy loving marriage with second husband if she was still so madly in love with her first husband until she died? TRUE LOVE DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!! Lol Johny Cash loved JUNE CASH SO MUCH HE DIDNT WANT TO GO ON LIVING WITHOUT HER HE DIED JUST A FEW MONTHS AFTER HER. REMINDS ME SO MUCH OF THE BIOGRAPHY ABOUT THE MAN AND WIFE MOVIE THE NOTE BOOK. JOHNY AND VIVIAN SHOULD HAVE MARRIED INN THE FIRST PLACE THEY NEVER TOOK TIME TO COURT AND GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER THEY WERE JUST LONELY PEOPLE WHO BECAME PEN PALS WHIILE JOHNY WAS IN THE MILITARY.HE JUST WANTED TO FEEL LIKE HE HAD SOMEONE TO LIVE FOR SOMEONE TO COME HOME TO EVEN IF IT WAS A VIRTUAL STRANGER . HE WAS ARRANGED FRROM HIS FAMILY BECAUSE HIS FATHER BLAMED HIM FOR HIS BROTHER DEATH DUE TO A SAW MILL ACCIDENT WHEN THEY WERE BOTH JUST YOUNG KIDS.Vivian and Johny were strangers playing house and making babies. If Johny really loved her he wouldn't have been gone out on the road so much!! I'm not partial to JOHNY OR JUNE,Though I love country music I never thought either one of them could sing. The actors who acted in the movie WALK THE LINE.. COULD SING A 100 TIMES BETTER THAN JOHNY CASH OR JUNE CARTER. WITHERSPOON WAS. SO MUCH PRETTIER THAN JUNE WHO I NEVER THOUGHT WAS PRETTY WHEN JUNE SANG ON STAGE SHE MOVEED HER ARM AND HAND WAVING IT AROUND LOOKED LIKE SHE WAS HAVING A SPASTIC SEIZURE. SHE DEFFINATLY DID NOT AGE WELL, SHE REMINDED ME OF THE WOMEN CHARACTERS THAT PLAYED IN THE VAMPIRE DAY TIME SCARY SOAP MOVIE DARK SHADOWS!!!

NONE of them knew he race, heck her own kids didn't know until a recent DNA test. Johnny was so binged out on drugs he hurt everyone around him. These guys traveled EVERY NIGHT by CAR to go to bar to bar to school to school to fairs, at 50mph. The slept in cars, SHOWERED & ATE at random peoples homes after the shoes and back on the road. This was a COMPLETELY different time. There was no guide or book telling them what to do. They were teens being swallowed up by immense fame all alone. Elvis, Johnny and Carl Perkins traveled 300 days THEIR FIRST THREE YEARs for sun records. Can you imagine?? You would need pills I don't care who you are. June was country royalty. Her entire family was ALLLLLL famous, she knew and understood exactly what was going on.

Wow thanks for this very interesting video. I was born biracial to an Italian father and African-American mother who was able to "pass" as white in the early days of the civil rights movement. At the time, my parents falsified their marriage certificate since mixed race marriages were illegal. My Brother and I were told growing up that we were anything other than African American. My heart and admiration go out to Vivian. I raised 3 daughters to be very proud of who they are. Lessons learned.

I don't know how old you are, but there is no question that progress has been made, in so many ways. Just not as much as it should have been by this time. I remember the colored and white water fountains, the lack of anyone Black (or any other ethnicity but white for that matter) on TV. My father would always yell to "come see your cousin" when there was a commercial on TV with Black person in the mid-1960s. So things have improved.

This was very respectfully done. It’s mentioned a couple of times that she was religious to be exact she was a devoted Catholic in a Protestant USA 🇺🇸. She was married by her Uncle who was a Catholic Priest. I mention this because Catholics did experience discrimination in this country, Not like the black Americans, but she was Not spared. BTW, Rosanne Cash, also had black ancestry on her Father’s side. It often turns out that many White and Black Americans that have been here for centuries that believe they have Native American linkage, turns out to be black for the whites and white for the blacks. Johnny Cash, often stated he had Native American ancestry, turns out it was black. When the 1% of black ancestry was fully enforced in 1924 in the Southern States, it met the approval of Americans with mixed Ancestry that were EXCLUDED. Primarily because the man was white, the woman was mixed, the black was heavily diluted and the offsprings/children were white passing. Plenty of news papers and articles from 1895 to 1924 support this claim. Many mixed Europeans also got a pass. The Miscegenation Laws, forbidding interracial marriages between blacks and whites, ended by the Supreme Court in 1967 with the Loving vs Virginia case. The 1 drop rule, was only in effect for 43 years and yet black Americans still identify and apply it to everyone, including White Americans with any hidden black ancestry, like it’s being done in this case. I’ve met many self-identifying well off black Americans that appear white in skin color, features, hair texture. Even in their DNA they are 70%-80% European, especially from Virginia and the Carolinas. Basically, do Not assume that White presenting Americans, do not identify as black, as they are the ones that bear the responsibility to lift their darker skin people into acceptable standards, including beauty standards - so telling them they don’t look black, etc is not going to win you any points. They are not seeking inclusion, but respect and equally . Having a black friend is no longer going to cut it, you need to have a Black family member 😊

That was very interesting and I can't believe I had never heard this before. Vivian was indeed very beautiful. Just as a human, I feel the attitude that against their marriage shameful. My life theory is good people are rare, like diamonds. They are not the rule but the exceptions, in any and every race. I've been fortunate to have met diamonds in several races and I'm unwilling to write off a whole race, even my own, because most of them are not good people. I don't want to miss any chance at meeting more diamonds wherever I can. God has scattered them through all races. I'm not sure if I explained that well or not. 😁
