I interviewed him for the Oakland Tribune when he was promoting Cecil B. Demented and asked him about this clip (after seeing it so many times at UC Theater) and he was legitimately surprised both to be asked about it and that something he'd just done in one take as a joke took on such a life of its own.

This brings back memories. At the late, great UC theater in Berkely, where I first saw Kurosawa, John Woo, Jackie Chan, and too many others to name, they used this as their "no smoking" announcement. It was also where Werner Herzog ate his shoe.

Thank you! I first saw this in the 1970's at the now-shuttered UC Theatre in Berkeley. Over the next two and a half decades I anticipated John Waters' message before every feature, seeing the wear and tear on the film over those years, but thinking he must be one of the most wonderful people around. I discovered Waters and his movies at the U.C. I have so many associations, like the first time I saw "Casablanca," knowing it was iconic, but nothing else about it. Thank you, thank you!

I was an usher at the U.C. Theater in '91/'92. 1370 seats of awesome. What a great film house. I was devastated to hear that it had closed. I came to view this clip specifically because of my memories of seeing it in that very theater. Glad to run in to someone else sharing their thoughts on that wonderful spot in a random corner on the internet. Cheers.

@@p1zd3c The building is still there. The marquee and ticket booth are still there, but it is no longer a cinema. It is now what I think they call a "large event venue." Remember Au Coquelet on the corner of Milvia and University, in the former Dutch Boy building? It is now being torn down. Downtown Berkeley has been decimated. There are no longer any movie theaters there.
