Hey, Chef! Many thanks for reacting to this song. "Mother" was one of the first songs John Lennon recorded following the breakup of The Beatles (Yes, he was a Beatle). John Lennon was exploring Primal Scream Therapy at the time and was trying to start a new career without The Beatles as a solo artist, as were his buddies Paul, George and Ringo. All four found success immediately, but John Lennon's was probably the most raw, stripped bare, personal, and heartfelt. John's father left his mother and John was raised without a father, and his father didn't really get in touch with him until years later, when John was a world-famous, successful, wealthy rock star. John's mother was tragically killed when she was hit by a car being driven by a policeman, not far from where John was hanging out with a friend, when John was still a young boy. John was basically raised by his aunt, his mother's sister, as John's mother was pretty much an absentee figure in his life, only making periodic appearances before vanishing again. John's aunt, who really had no interest in raising John, and was stern and aloof, but she tried her best I suppose. On this song, John Lennon is using Primal Scream Therapy to try to exorcise the heartfelt pain of a rough childhood, with an absent father who left him and a mother who just pretty much abandoned him before she was killed. The song is clearly about his childhood but kind of ironic because when he had his first son, John was never there for him because he was busy touring, playing live and writing lots of music. Which leads me to the lyric "Children don't do what I've had done" in my opinion, he's simply telling his son to not follow in his steps and commit the same mistakes. Try reacting to Isolation by John Lennon (If possible, with lyrics). Happy holidays mate, hope you and your family are doing great.

John was mostly raised by his Aunt Mimi, after child protective services got involved. John’s mom (Julia)was struck, and killed, by a car while crossing the street from Mimi’s house to catch a bus. John was 17. Tragic that he repeated history with Julian. A complicated, gifted man. Love John Lennon flaws and all❤️

This song is a desperate howl from a baby-adult, who was abandoned by his father in primehood and tragically lost his ma when he just was a teen. No matter fame, money or success, that pain followed him through all his life.

I think that " Children, dont do what I have done. I couldnt walk and I tried to run" is John trying to tell people to not do what he did to his son Julian.( abandon him) "I couldn't walk" means that John didn't know how to raise a child but he "tried to run away from his actions"

Well, you chopped off the funeral bells at the beginning and the fade out with the escalating horrifying screaming which was the whole point to the song.

Wow, dont know who John Lennon was. He was a founding member of The Beatles. The most critically acclaimed, successful and influential band in history. Fact not opinion. Read about them and learn. He was one of the most famous people to have ever lived. He was singing about his mother who gave him up at a young age and was killed when he was about 16. His father left when he was born and he had it in him to become one of if not the greatest songwriter in music history. Please do some listening and reading and learn.
