A painful song to listen to. His mom was a “free spirit” who handed him off to her sister to raise, but she did come in and out of his life for years. When John was a young teenager, his mom was killed by a drunk driver. His dad left his family very early on, but did show up after John was famous, only to see if he could get money out of him. John apparently showed him the door, and rightly so. John’s sad childhood left scars on his soul that he never quite got over. He admittedly was a poor father to his first son Julian, but tried to be a far better father to his second son Sean.

Sadly, after all of this John did the same to his first son Julian. They had just started to reconnect when Julian was a teen, then John was murdered. Tragedy all the way around. I love John Lennon’s music, and this is a favorite❤️

John Lennon was raised by his Aunt Mimi from the age of 5 (his mothers older sister) there are conflicting stories about how this arrangement came about but essentially his parents (who were married) had a messy break up and both walked away from their son. He reconciled with his mum when he was a teenager but she was sadly ran over by a car and killed when he was 17.

He wrote a song about his mother, Julia, on The Beatles' White Album. Like John, Paul McCartney lost his mom at a young age. His mother Mary passed from cancer when he was 14 (?). He too wrote a song for her... "Let it Be".

This song is literally a representation of an event that allegedly happened to John. When he was very young, about 5, I believe, his parents were splitting up and they made John decide who he wanted to go with. At first he selected his dad, but as they were departing he ran back to his mother. That they would do this to a small child was traumatic for John and he never got over it. Over 50 years ago this happened to me as well and I never got over it. Anyway, John's mother's lifestyle made it so that he ended up being raised by his mom's sister. From his point of view, he believed he was an inconvenience. Legend has it that his Aunt Mimi did try to raise him right but never really gave him love. So, as he grew he bottled up all of this resentment and guilt. It may have made him create the greatest pop band to bless the Earth, but he was a bitter crippled man psychologically for years. As wrenching as the song is when you know the story, I feel it concludes the tirelessly debated subject of who was the most gifted vocalist of the Beatles. A fantastic vocal!!

Mimi didn't like that Julia was with another man and not John's dad so she made up a bunch of lies to social services who place John in the care of his grandad but his grandad gave him to Mimi to raise. It's all in John's half sisters book. He was close to his mum and his sisters.

The lyrics of "Mother" address both of Lennon's parents, each of whom abandoned him in his childhood. His father, Alf, left the family when John was an infant. His mother, Julia, did not live with her son, although they had a good relationship; she was hit and killed in a car accident on 15 July 1958 by an off-duty policeman named Eric Clague, when Lennon was 17. In one of his last concerts, Lennon stated that the song was not just about his parents, but was rather "about 99% of the parents, alive or half dead"

A lot of the photos in the video are of people and moments that had special relevance to this song. If you're not a big Beatles fan you're missing that level. John's father was a merchant marine who took off and his mother was young and more like a big sister to him. He saw her on and off, but he was raised by his aunt (her sister). His mother died when she was hit by a bus and I believe John was 16.

He then started to follow similar patterns plus all the repressed anger and unresolved emotional baggage which led to neglect, drug use and incidents of abuse. This is a wonderful, poignant song. I love the Beatles and Lennon's music. This song is the result of therapy John was going through called "Primal Scream," which is why there is so much screaming in the song. It has the subject scream and finally get it all out instead of keeping things bottled up. It's a well-known treatment. It seems to have worked for John Lennon. John seemed to mellow after this therapy and to be able to move on. One indication is the way he treated his second son, Sean, compared to his treatment of his first son, Julian. You should listen to John Lennon's song, "Cold Turkey." It's about his quitting heroin cold turkey. A great song.

  • @JasonSmith-jr7jh

Sorry to be negative, but Cold Turkey is awful! Rockin' guitar, but the lyric is the most immature thing Lennon ever put out. He wanted it to be the next Beatles single, but the other three hated it (and vetoed it), and rightfully so. Even though I'm a Lennon fan, the Single of this was the worst thing ever put out in the name of all that is Rock, when coupled with the even worse B-SIDE of this 45. It's called "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's only looking for her hand in the snow)" If you think I'm exaggerating, why don't you look it up and give it a listen? And if you actually do look it up, I pity you brother...for what you're about to experience! ✌️
