John, as an old bow hunter I would say “ ride it while you can “. During my best years there wasn’t the awesome equipment of even the last 10 years. The last five years we have the best archery equipment EVER. I am disgusted that I now have to shoot 60#’s or less. My skill level is only like 280 of 300 on a 40 yard max 3-d course. I shoot some arrows at least 5 days a week. Some days 10 shots some 30 to 40. At 72 years old this 2023 season may be my last, who fricking knows. You are on the ride of a lifetime which I’m so glad for you. Young and strong but it will be gone. The information you pass along is so valuable to thousands of archers because it’s facts you present from years of getting it done. I personally applaud your hard work to have gotten to this point in your life. 👍👍

I competed with compounds, but have always been a trad hunter. At 64, a lot of the trad crew that split off around 1980 are 10 to 20 years older than me, and were still hunting with sticks of 40, sometimes 30 pounds. These guys still nail a lot of deer. They are probably shooting 400 grain arrows at 150 fps, and still getting it done on whitetails. So with a modern 60 pound bow, you can trim a lot off your current setup before you have to worry about calling it quits. Extreme FOC arrows and COC single bevel heads are really helpful when these kinds of power losses are a reality. Yet there were people doing this stuff with 30 pound hickory stick bows and regular trad wooden arrows also. Really helps to get close, and old timers know those tricks.

Hey Dud does your arrow wind up being around 29-30” since you have that condor wing span? 😂 I have been experimenting with the 5mm for a bit, but seems you wind up on the weaker side of spine in comparison to others. Thank you for all the vids especially the bow build/tune/repair ones you done over the years!

It does me and Dudley are close to the same draw length and the closest I can get away with at 30.5 was 29 when I shot that draw length I’m now at 31 to 32 depending on the bow and if I’m at 32 I can’t shoot anything under 29.5 and that’s like almost point touching the rest

@@ChilleDxFighteR that's strange. My draw is 30. I get my arrows. Shaft to shaft at 31. Then with the Nock and HIT insert and bar (on 5mm). Right under 31.5. On the 6.5s sa.e and those have the orange 6.5 hit inserts that come out a little.

Whats you thoughts on the 75gr stainless halfouts? Im shooting the 260 axis with 125gr head and they drop like crazy. Probably best to use them for tree stand hunting only and find something flatter for elk.

Does anyone know how to setup a tradional bow so that i dont hyperextend my arm to try and get the full draw back? I have mine just slightly off so that i need a couple more inches in order to get a full draw back to the back of my mouth. If i try to pull all the way to the back of my mouth than my arm has to be hyperextended in order to get the power i need to hit a shot.

I just built my first set of arrows. I need 31" ish arrows so it was a hard time making a light arrow with good FOC. 31" Sonic 6.0 300 spine, 50gr brass insert, 125grain point, 3 AAE Max Stealth vanes. Ended up 483gr roughly with 12.5-13 FOC I think. Only shoot a 60lb bow right now.

That seems low for what ur stating. 175 point weight with a 300 spine arrow should be higher foc then that. I would look at Black Eagle Carnivores in 300 spine. Work great for me my arrows are 30.5 and with Black Eagle the straightness is measured end to end or the arrow not 28 so they will be more consistent for you vs other brands where the ends are wonbly sometimes.
