Nice machine. I have a 1985 Onan 316. With 500lbs on the rear weight bracket, no chains needed and no ramming snow piles - pushes anything I need.

You should reverse your hydraulics, the inside lever has a float setting, try it.

The JD 420 is a beast as well.

Thanks for the heads up about wear on the transmission. I don't normally do that (was showing off for video) but it's good to know that it's better that I don't.

We had a JD 140 that we used to plow our driveway with. We tortured it to death slamming snow piles with it for two decades. The transmission held up

JD 318's were beasts! It's so nice to see one so well taken care of. This machine is beautiful and between 26-35 years young and she's easily got another 35 years to go. Take care of her!

I plan on keeping it forever - they don't make em like this any more. With 1700+ hrs on it, it does consume/burn a little bit of oil. I have to add a pint maybe once a month. One day I'll rebuild it.

Pull your engine shields and clean out the fins. Dirt, oil/debris will get in there and cause the engine to run hotter than normal and then they start to use oil. Those Onan engines were used on refrigeration units, welders, tractors, etc. in the day. Deere needed a good tractor to recover from the 317 Kohler engines that blew up on an incline and they spared nothing on the 318.

I start my splash lube tractors at 50% throttle for 5 seconds to help with lubrication but this is a forced lube engine so I don't see the need to start it at full throttle

I idea for you ,, instead of pushing into big piles like that,,start making the pile a ramp that you can drive up on and once you have a ramp then you just start pushing the snow off the back of the ramp and keep extending the ramp a little higher and longer.. this way you never run out of room plus it is easier on the tractor than ramming big piles to push them back ,, i live in PA and get alot of snow and that works for me ,,,just a idea for ya

6th Gear Garage naa you just build it up slowly packing it as you go the more you drive on it the more packed it gets and just keep making the ramp higher and farther as you go.. eventually all snow packs some types like light fluffy snow takes longer ,, but that type of snow pushes super easy so no worries.. I start making the ramps a little at a time starting with the first snow .. this method has always worked well for me in the 35 plus years I been doing it... especially if ya get a big nor’easter with that nice easy pack snow ramps up really quick.. hope this helps

Nice GT. I'm a fan of both old IH Cubs and older JD's. i own both,,lol! We have allot of fun working our old Garden tractors. My Cub is a 77 1650,,"Grumpy" as we call it. What a beast that thing is. My old 112 JD although not a hydro and with a belt drive, but still a great tractor. Someday I will own a 400 series JD, I'd really like a 455 diesel with the 4 wheel steer. New stuff is nothing like the older Johns and Cubs,,I should add Bolens also although I have never owned one. My neighbor who has the same tractor as you gets out there with me on my 1650 and we plow all the neighbors drives and have a good time. Sure I could do it quicker on my atv, but the old tractors are too much fun.

I'm considering a plow for my 345, but where I live, we can get 2-4 feet overnight. I have yet to see someone plow that amount with their JD.

I run a 2019 e100 with a old kobota plow

I have a 318 that i dont use for mowing anymore. Is it that capable for snow plowing to warrant converting for snow plowing ? Thanks

With weights and tire chains, yes. I tried it without either of those and got nowhere.

+Jarret Zendt The driver + wheel weights + chains are usually enough to prevent spinning. No fluid in tires. If I gun the throttle too hard, I may get a little spin. Also I am likely to get some spin when pushing a very heavy load of snow.

John Deere lawn and garden tractors have always been manufactored in the U.S.A. ! Horicon WI and Greenville TN !

not trying to be a jerk but it was hard on it when you abruptly hit the reverse. I had a 730 and I wore out the transmission and it was not cheap at all to fix. I had another mower that I had modified it would bring the fron end up when I did that. but it is a nice mower

To be honest, I wouldn't know. I have the waze app on my phone that tells you your mph. I'll try it next time I have the tractor out.

No just chains and weights on the rear wheels.

Very nice 318. Don't slam the piles though, those tractors can take abuse but you will wear it out very quickly if you keep doing that.

I plowed the same way with my 1972 12 horse cub cadet for too many NEPA winters to count, never hurt it one bit......But it was a 3 speed manual.

Nice little tractor. But I prefer snowblowers.

No no no that might work for 6 inches or less of snow but a blower attachment is needed for deeper snow!

I always find plowing tedious and messy. I'd rather use a snowblower attachment or better yet, just use a standalone snow blower. I have a huge driveway (about 200 feet) along with parking for about 15 cars. I gave up on plowing it and just use my 30 inch blowers to clear it. Takes an hour or more but the results are worth it.

Yeah there were a few times where there was just nowhere else to push the snow. We haven't had snow like that in a few years.

try hanging some weights on the back of the unit...you will get better traction... chains are good but wheel weights are not as good as weights in the back... better for towing but not for plowing...

Thanks, They were for sure on inside out that season. I'm still waiting to see if we get a decent snow this winter before putting them on. Had them on last winter and never even needed to plow :(

The controls can be switched/reversed, depending on how the hydraulic lines are connected. One time I had them connected so that pulling the lever back made the blade lower and pushing it forward made the blade raise - I had to switch them so it was similar to a flight simulator. Pull back for up, forward for down :)

+Harold Shinski The blade has a shoe on each side that contacts the ground and leaves a little bit of space between the driveway and the blade. I used to run without shoes and scrape the concrete with the blade, but had to spend a lot more $ to replace the lip on the blade than replacing the shoes. Concrete wore it down pretty quick.

Have you heard of the rubber cutting edge? Some folks like them. Apparently they are cheaper to replace and a little more forgiving that a metal edge. I personally haven't tried it.

I have either a 1985 or 86 John Deere 318. It has a hydraulic mower deck, hydraulic plow and a hydraulic rota tiller. Anyone know what it is worth.

425 etc is decent but think it being water cooled is its only advantage over my 420

6th Gear Garage You need ag-lug tires and the 47"inch snow two-stage snow blower on that tractor. That's very hard on the frame,blade,transmission by RAMING the snow like that. Parts are no longer available for those old Sunstrand hydro-transmissions by the way.

Wow, pretty rough handling of that near vintage tractor. I would be highly suspect of that tractors worthiness at this point.......Slamming it into snow banks repeatedly and jamming forward and reverse gears....it hurt to watch is little tractor get tortured like that....OUCH dude....seriously?
